  • Patent number: 6361262
Abstract: The present invention relates to a drilling vessel with drilling tower or drilling mast for drilling in the earth's surface from said vessel, for example for oil or gas. The drilling vessel according to the present invention is characterized by an auxiliary tower or mast placed next to the drilling tower or drilling mast, and a clamp carriage which is fixed so that it is movable between a first position near the drilling tower or drilling mast and a second position near the auxiliary tower or auxiliary mast, said clamp carriage having at least one gripping clamp for clamping the drill string. The presence of an auxiliary tower or auxiliary mast next to the drilling tower or drilling mast means that a substantial time gain can be achieved during the construction and dismantling of the drilling string.

Abstract: A U-shaped elevator having no doors is provided with first and second latching mechanisms which when contacted by the tubular to be entrapped within the elevator move from a closed position to an open position and which then return to a closed position as soon as the tubular is entrapped within the elevator. The latching mechanisms have a safety catch which prevents the tubular from being inadvertently removed from the elevator. The safety latch mechanism can only be activated by a handle which is manipulated by hand by personnel working on the derrick utilizing the elevator. The elevator has an open throat to receive tubulars that have couplers or other features with a lower flange surface for lifting a pipe string. The throat access has blocking members that are movable to allow tubulars to move out of the gap unless the blocking members are locked to prevent such movement. The blocking members have latches biased toward a position to immobilize the members.

Abstract: A multi-purpose drilling rig has a movable pipe support cradle which moves horizontally to transfer drill pipe from a storage area to the well being drilled, and vice versa. • Patent number: 5941324
Abstract: A mobile rig for angle drilling comprises a tiltable drilling mast and a drill pipe storage rack both mounted on a land vehicle, with a carriage movable lengthwise on a track extending alongside the mast. When the mast is in an oblique position for angle drilling, an articulating arm on the carriage retrieves drill pipes individually from the pipe storage rack, swings them to a position above the mast and lowers them into alignment with a drilling head. The storage rack is moved longitudinally as the drill pipe supply is depleted so that the arm can grasp each drill pipes close to its center of gravity. In an alternative embodiment, one of the elements of the articulating arm is extensible.

Abstract: An improved drilling rig having a drillhead assembly positioned onto a mast for vertical movement therewith. The drillhead assembly is hung by cables threaded from a hoist assembly positioned at the top end of the mast. One or more cable return assemblies are positioned at the bottom end of the mast. The cables are counter-wound on the hoist assembly such that the cables roll off of the hoist assembly in the direction towards the drillhead assembly at the same rate the cables are pulled onto the hoist assembly from the direction towards the cable return assemblies. The drillhead assembly has a drive motor assembly rotatably mounted within a frame. A break-out tool assembly is mounted at the lower end of the mast. The break-out tool assembly has means for grasping rotating a length of string so as to separate the lengths of string.

  • Patent number: 5687804
Abstract: Equipment for handling drill rods, comprising a slot-like storage space for storing drill rods side by side, a gripping jaw for gripping the drill rod, and a linearly movable displacing arm for displacing the drill rod from the outlet opening of the storage space by a linear movement to the drilling center of the drilling equipment and back. The equipment comprises a closing device positioned in the outlet opening of the storage space and movable in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the displacing arm. The closing device has two inclined support surfaces facing away from the storage space, and the displacing arm similarly has an outwardly inclined guide surface at its end close to the storage space. On picking up a drill rod from the storage space, the gripping jaw presses the closing device at its support surface inwards so that the drill rod to be picked up is able to push the closing device inwards when the displacing arm is moved.
