In a second embodiment, a supplemental weight has a base and a movable weight that are associated and positionally adjustable along at least one linear axis. The supplemental weight is removably coupled with the weight scale and calibrated into an operating state, wherefrom the weighing range of the scale may be extended.

The transfer and holding hoppers also incorporate pairs of clam shell type doors. The associated method, is characterized by forming and weighing the product in the first in-series hopper and then discharging the batch in sequence to the transfer and holding hoppers.

    Abstract: A modular checkweigher/grader system is disclosed. A feed conveyor is provided for directing items to be weighed to a weighing conveyor. The entire system is modularly designed using lightweight durable materials, such as plastics and stainless steel. Each conveyor includes a conveyor belt in contact with upper and lower surfaces of a platform. The belts are tightened and loosened with quick release tension clamps and driven by air powered motors. The feed conveyor is attached to a frame by toggle clamps. The weighing conveyor is attached to a load cell which is connected to the frame by toggle clamps. These toggle clamps permit the entire feed and weighing conveyors to be easily removed. All of the air and electrical connector to the conveyors are by quick release connectors. The entire weighing conveyor is used as the weighing platform. A tachometer may be used to regulate the conveyor speed. A modular grading conveyor is disclosed for categorizing objects from the weighing conveyor.

    Abstract: An improved method of assembling conventional scales, including bathroom scales, is provided by employing an improved spring for connecting the upper housing to the bottom pan. The upper housing may now be connected to the bottom pan with a simple downward force imposed on the improved spring thereby hooking the bottom of the spring to the bottom pan and mateably engaging the tapered top of the spring in an extruded hole in the upper housing. The improved spring is tapered at the top end to mateably engage the extruded hole in the upper housing and includes only one hook on the bottom end for engagement with the bottom pan. The improved spring enables easier and faster assembly of conventional scales thereby reducing labor and production costs.

    Abstract: A postal rate device for use in cooperation with a scale for facilitating interchangeability of an insert card bearing indicia representing a weight to rate conversion table. There are clips on the back side of the cover for removable attachment to the scale face plate. An aperture in the recessed portion of the cover facilitates effecting release of the shield by pushing a pencil or the like through the aperture even while the cover remains attached. Alternatively, once the cover is detached a pencil or the like may be pushed through an aperture to release the shield and insert card or the user may grasp the cover and push on the back side of the recessed portion to pop-out the shield and insert card. Accordingly, removal and replacement of the insert card from the scale, can be readily accomplished without the use of any special tools.

To reduce the possibility of inaccurate feeding of coal, the outputs of the respective load cells are compared, and if deviation from a predetermined weight distribution over the load cells is detected, feed from the tank is stopped. The load cells may be duplicated in series, and the summed outputs of the two sets of load cells compared to detect malfunctioning of a load cell, again resulting in cessation of feeding from that tank.

A second opening through the receptacle inside the base permits the wires to connect to a battery harness inside the receptacle and a matching box or receptacle cover is latchably connected to secure the cover to the base and close off the receptacle such that the cover is flush with or coplanar with the base.

    Abstract: An improved weighing apparatus includes a load receiving platform which is supported by a plurality of load cells. Each of the load cells has a downwardly facing recess in which a floating pin is received. The pin has a relatively large base which engages a floor or support surface and an upwardly projecting mounting section which extends into the recess in the load cell. The pin has an arcuate upper surface which enables tilting movement to occur between the pin and the load cell to compensate for uneven floors. In order to compensate for shifting movement of the platform relative to the floor due to thermal expansion and other causes, the base of the floating pin is movable along the floor. The mounting section of the pin is held in the recess in the load cell by a retainer plate which is fixedly connected with the load cell.
