Patent number: 7439457Abstract: The higher the reading of relative density, liquid weight per unit volume, of pieces of produce such as fruits, the juicier the piece of produce is. By comparing a number of pieces of produce of the same type and species and ranking them, the juiciest pieces of produce may be easily selected and purchased by a shopper. An arrangement of linkages and a sliding spring element creates a device with two inputs, one input being proportional to the volume of the produce based on a representative diameter, and the other input being an approximation of the weight of the produce based on the deflection of a spring. The two inputs are mechanically combined to create one output indicative of density, and thus juiciness, and a pointer is employed whose deflection is proportional to the quotient of the weight and volumetric inputs of each piece of produce tested by the shopper.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 2007Date of Patent: October 21, 2008Inventor: John E Meschter

Patent number: 6284987Abstract: A weighing scale detects and indicates changes in a small weight that is embedded within a much larger residual weight. The scale device has a base and a top weighing pan above it, with a linkage supported between the base and the top pan. A counterbalance weight lever is supported on a pivot member, and has one end connected to the linkage, and a counterbalance weight on the other end. An adjustable tensioning spring provides a balancing force for the counterbalance weight lever within the weight range of the critical weight. A potentiometer of other detecting device can provide an electrical signal to an alarm device to warn the consumer that the weight of a consumable quantity has dropped into the critical weight range.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1999Date of Patent: September 4, 2001Inventor: Khalid F. Patent number: 5703334Abstract: A load to be measured is transmitted to a load cell, such as a compression load cell, through a double piston, single cylinder load transmitter that has a pressure chamber between two pistons in the single cylinder. One piston bears against the load. The other piston bears against the load cell to form a floating link between the load and the load cell when a sufficient pressure is introduced into said pressure chamber to prevent unwanted, off-center load application force components from adversely affecting any measured results. Preferably, at least one axially outwardly facing end surface of the piston bearing against the load cell has a curved end surface area. A rocker pin with a pressure controllable variable length may be formed by making both axially outwardly facing end surfaces curved. Several load transmitters may be arranged in parallel to transmit larger loads into a load cell.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1996Date of Patent: December 30, 1997Assignee: HBM, Inc.Inventors: Thomas W. Patent number: 4597458Abstract: A balance having a setting means with which the relative precision of the weighing result is to be determined can be set by the user. The balance then adapts automatically to the set relative precision. This adaptation can occur, e.g., in the number of positions displayed, in the step width in the last particular position, in the selection of the integration time, in the filtering of the measured values in the digital signal processing unit, in the frequency of the taking over of the measured value into the display and/or at the time of the emission of the standstill signal or of the measured value release signal.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1984Date of Patent: July 1, 1986Assignee: Sartorius GmbHInventors: Erich Knothe, Franz-Josef Melcher, Christian Oldendorf

Patent number: 4533008Abstract: A livestock scale has a weighing platform supported by a support apparatus and is vertically movable relative thereto. A weighing mechanism is provided and indicates the weight of a load received on the platform. Primary and secondary scale arms are pivotally connected to the support apparatus and the weighing platform by hanging links. A connecting link connects the primary scale arm to the secondary scale arm along a medial segment of the secondary scale arm. A weight indicator is held by the support apparatus and is connected to the primary scale arm for indicating a weight in predetermined proportion to the weight of the load on the platform. Horizontal movement of the weighing platform is restrained by a pair of lateral sway bars and a longitudinal sway link, while vertical deflection of the weighing platform during weighing is not inhibited thereby. The sway link forms a parallelogram configuration with the primary scale arm and the primary hanging link and associated support apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1984Date of Patent: August 6, 1985Inventor: Jerry L. Patent number: 4485881Abstract: A load cell for measuring forces applied thereto including an adjusting mechanism for off center load adjustment is disclosed. The load cell comprises a substantially parallelogram structure having a moving section on one side and a fixed section on the opposite side. Upper and lower strips extend between and connect the fixed and moving sections. Flexjoints are located at approximately the juncture of each of the strips and the sections, the flexjoints being adapted to flex in response to the force exerted thereon and facilitate transmission of the force to the transducer portion of the load cell. An adjusting mechanism for off center load adjustment is positioned on the load cell and includes both a vertical and horizontal adjusting mechanism that are adapted to alter the position of a first flexjoint adjacent to the adjusting mechanism relative to the position of a second flexjoint.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1983Date of Patent: December 4, 1984Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: Herbert Tramposch, Glen J. Patent number: 4479560Abstract: An assembly (10) for use with several like units in weighing the mass of a loaded cargo pallet supported by its trunnions (12) has a bridge frame (20) for positioning the assembly on a transportation frame carrying the pallet while straddling one trunnion of the pallet and its trunnion lock, and a cradle assembly (60) for incrementally raising the trunnion. The mass at the trunnion is carried as a static loading by a slidable bracket (40) mounted upon the bridge frame for supporting the cradle assembly. The bracket (40) applies the static loading to an electrical load cell (80) symmetrically positioned between the bridge frame (20) and the bracket (40). The static loading compresses the load cell, causing a slight deformation and a potential difference at load cell terminals (86) which is proportional in amplitude to the mass of the pallet at the trunnion.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1982Date of Patent: October 30, 1984Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventor: Richard M. Patent number: 4134467Abstract: A low profile platform scale having a rigid rectangular platform and a base assembly, supporting the platform, adapted to rest on an underlying foundation and having four independent corner pads, each with beam load cells mounted in cantilever fashion on the corner pads, with the load cell elements coupled to the platform in an arrangement where the load on the platform is transmitted to the load cell elements by means of a tension member. The tension member is connected by ball and socket means to both the platform and the load cell element. The corner pads are connected to each other by slightly flexible, inelastic rods arranged beneath and adjacent borders of the platform in a rectangular array, and fastened to adjacent corner pads for fixing the spacing between them. The underlying corner pads operate independently and accommodate locally irregular surfaces causing any one of the corner pads to be slightly tilted without affecting the accuracy of response of the load cell.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1977Date of Patent: January 16, 1979Assignee: Mangood CorporationInventor: Chester S. Patent number: 4084650Abstract: A spring balance comprises an object-receiving plate cooperating with a weighing spring and with a movable rack meshing with the pinion of a rotatable graduated disc cooperating with a fixed index. Zero-setting and calibration of the balance are provided independently. Firstly, the rack is set to a zero position, then the disc is independently set to indicate zero. A reference weight is placed on the plate, and the balance calibrated to indicate the exact weight by varying the transmission ratio of a transmission lever between the weighing spring and the rack. This transmission lever has an arm of adjustable length which, when the rack is in the zero position, is perpendicular to the direction of movement of the rack.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 1976Date of Patent: April 18, 1978Assignee: TerraillonInventor: Paul Terraillon
