Signal processing in advance of transmission over the communications channel can transform the communication signal into a waveform that has a reduced propensity to emit radiated energy during transmission over the communications channel. Exemplary signal transformations can involve applying either frequency-selective or broadband attenuation to the communication signal. Following transmission of the waveform over the communications channel, the original communication signal can be restored via reversing the signal transformation. The reverse transformation can comprise applying frequency-selective gain or broadband gain to the transmitted waveform.

    Abstract: Proportional spacing of characters, for example by a laser-xerographic printer, is achieved using a character generator memory, for example a random access memory (RAM), to store the characters of a font in a plurality of variable-size binary matrices. Each column includes at least one parity bit and at least two pitch bits or end of character (EOC) bits. After a character matrix is selected for printing: the columns are transmitted sequentially from the RAM, the bit patterns are decoded as valid and invalid EOC indication signals or as valid and invalid NON-EOC signals, and the parity of each column is checked. Also, stop printing circuitry inhibits operation of the dot matrix printer when the parity checker indicates no error but the pitch bit decoder derives an invalid EOC or NON-EOC SIGNAL.

    Abstract: A character display system is disclosed which provides displays of characters of variable size. A diddle raster scanning technique is used to display each character in its entirely before proceeding with the display of the next character. The size of the character is increased by increasing the size of the diddle raster scanned. In order to improve the appearance of larger point size characters, each character stroke is repeated a number of times N, where N increases with increasing point size.A circuit (112) provides an indication of the size of the character to be displayed. This indication is used to address a ROM (146) which contains control information (D1-D5) therein. A portion (D2, ) D3, D5) of this information controls the size of the diddle raster scanned, and another portion (D1) provides the number N indicating the number of times each character stroke is to be repeated. A video generator (114) generates a video signal on the basis of this number N and various character codes supplied to it.

    Abstract: A digital display circuit for use with a video game or other displays fabricated as an MOS integrated circuit is described. The circuit permits the simultaneous display of many different patterns (and the simultaneous display of the same pattern) at any locations on a raster scanned cathode ray tube. Content-addressable memories are employed to compare the contents of a digital beam location counter with desired object locations. A random-access memory is then used to address a pattern library where each line of the patterns is stored. When more than one pattern is displayed at the same location, counting in the digital beam location counter is delayed to permit accessing of more than a single pattern line from the pattern library. A displacement counter is employed to store a count representative of the displacement between the actual beam position and the contents of the beam counter. The beam location counter is incremented at a faster rate during non-display periods to compensate for delayed counting.

This technique results in a much crisper appearance to the characters on the screen and permits as many as 128 characters per line using a low cost commercially available television (TV) monitor. A random access storage is used to store dynamically the addresses of positions (locations) of a read only store corresponding to characters to be displayed. The read only store (ROS) contains indicia corresponding to the discrete character elements of a plurality of characters, one set of indicia for each character in the desired character set.

    Abstract: Intermixing of line heights in a buffered printer is accomplished by storing a different byte in a forms control buffer for each line of coded character data in a page to be printed. As the coded data of each line is advanced for printing by an arrangement which modulates a laser beam during scanning across a printable medium to effect the printing, the byte within the forms control buffer corresponding to the line about to be printed causes selection of the number of scans of the laser beam to be used in printing the line, thereby determining the height of each line independently of the other lines in the page. Blank lines in the page are formed by channel commands to the printer which instruct an address register associated with the forms control buffer to be incremented to cause skipping to a particular channel number identified by one of the bytes in the forms control buffer or to cause spacing by a specified number of lines.

For the maximum width all of the modulation bits are applied to modulate the laser beam, while for a character cell width less than the maximum, only a selected number of the modulation bits are used to modulate the laser beam.

    Abstract: An apparatus for moving film through a projection or camera system utilizing continuous, uninterrupted motion of the film. Conventional sprocketed film is moved from reel to reel at a constant velocity. The image of the film frame passing over the film projection gate is projected upon an oscillating mirror mechanism which is driven synchronously with the motive force for the film strip. The oscillating mirror pivots at an angular velocity which stabilizes the image of the film frame, the mirror returning to its initial position during a small interval of the total time the film frame passes over the projection gate. A shutter periodically interrupts the light passing through the film frame to allow the mirror to return to its initial position where it becomes synchronized with the succeeding frame image.

    Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for displaying subscript and superscript characters on the screen of a cathode ray tube. The encoded characters are selectively read from a memory which also provides two extended level outputs relating to the subscript and superscript features. In response to the readout of a superscript character from memory, a superscript signal, at the related extended memory output, is fed to an amplifier which, in turn, drives a superscript coil positioned about the neck of the cathode ray tube. This superscript coil generates a flux which reacts with the flux generated by the tube's vertical deflection coil during readout of the selected character thereby raising the position of that character on the screen.     Abstract: Apparatus for reproducing characters from cathode ray tubes wherein a beam is deflected onto alpha/numeric characters occupying a selected area of a font. The beam is deflected by relatively high speed linear vertical strokes which are displaced horizontally by a slower speed stroke advance waveform and each scan is positioned relative to one of the selected areas. The vertical linear strokes of the beam are at a variable rate and the vertical strokes are terminated by time interval pulses at an amplitude corresponding to the area height of the font character. The rate of the strokes is determined by the time interval pulses which in turn are regulated by point size control selection means. A resultant two level output signal representative of the successive selected characters controls another cathode ray tube, the scanning of which is identical to that of the first cathode ray tube.

    Abstract: Disclosed is data storage and transfer apparatus forming a sub-system of a data display terminal of the type in which a page of characters arranged in rows and columns are displayed on a television monitor by means of converting a plurality of character-representing data words into a pattern of pulses that control the intensity of the television beam during the course of its raster scan. An advantageous composition of text on the display screen is obtained in that the number of characters per row is not arbitrarily limited to being a power of two. There is provided a multi-location random access memory (RAM) having sufficient storage capacity to store all the data words for a full page. Circuitry is provided for addressing the RAM by address pointers that are represented in matrix notation. The circuitry includes address converter circuitry for converting the address pointers to absolute addresses for selecting locations of the RAM in connection with the transfer of data words into and out of the RAM.
