Abstract: A transfer device for a vehicle includes a casing, a cylindrical input shaft supported by the casing, a first end of the input shaft engaging with a driveshaft, an output shaft supported on an internal surface of a second end of the input shaft and engaging with the second end of the input shaft, the output shaft including an oil passage formed therein in an axial direction, and a lubrication fluid supply passage supplying a lubrication fluid from the casing to the oil passage. The lubrication fluid supply passage includes an inner fluid tight chamber annularly formed with an external surface of the output shaft and an internal surface of the input shaft, a first passage establishing a communication between the inner fluid tight chamber and the oil passage, and a second passage establishing a communication between the inner fluid tight chamber and an external surface of the input shaft.

Abstract: An attachment structure for free-axle air pumps in differentials positions the free-axle air pump in the dead space behind the front bumper. This simplifies the harness arrangement by removing the free-axle air pump from inside the bonnet, and prevents flying pebbles, water and the like from damaging the free-axle air pump. A rearward extension from the bottom of the front bumper passes below the free-axle air pump to provide additional protection from flying objects and splashing water.
Abstract: A drive train arrangement for a motor vehicle that includes a pair of front and rear transfer cases each having a single-input shaft and dual-output shafts for providing drive to a front axle and to a pair of rear axles located in tandem and in which the arrangement is such that the rear transfer case normally provides a full-time four-wheel drive through the tandem axles and the front transfer case is selectively activated to direct power to the front axle so as to provide a full-time six-wheel drive for the vehicle.

Abstract: Tandem rear axle assembly for motor vehicles, especially trucks. The tandem rear axle assembly herein does not employ an inter-axle differential. Instead, torque is transmitted from a motor drive shaft to a longitudinally extending through shaft, which may drive a differential for a rearward rear axle. A forward rear axle is selectively engaged or disengaged, as driving conditions require, by a disk-type friction clutch or clutch pack. The clutch pack may be actuated by an actuator assembly which includes sensors for determining the rotational speeds of the two rear axles, and a computer controlled unit or signal generator for generating an output signal when the difference in rotational exceeds a predetermined limit. The output signal actuates, for example, by air pressure, a piston which compresses the clutch pack so as to engage the clutch and thereby transmit torque to both the forward and rearward rear axles simultaneously. The clutch may be manually actuated if desired.

Abstract: A drive mechanism is disclosed for rotating a pair of tandem wheel assemblies journalled on a centrally pivoted tandem drive housing. A jointless elastomeric belt extends about the wheel assemblies which are driven by two chains entrained over respective sprockets contained within the tandem drive housing. A planetary gear set is effective to powerably drive both chains with a differential action to minimize the influence of the belt loading upon the chains. The planetary gear set and the sprockets are constructed to deliver a greater torque to the rear wheel assembly than the front wheel assembly through the chains.

The split axle drive mechanism has a clutch associated with one of the differential side gears for preventing back drive to the transfer case in the two-wheel drive mode. A control system for operating the clutch responsive to the operational mode of the transfer case comprises a vacuum motor and a solenoid operated two-way valve energized by way of a switch in the transfer case. The control system also includes a pneumatic time delay and a vacuum check valve.
