Movable Body Portion Facilitating Engine Access Patents (Class 180/89.17)
  • Patent number: 7108093
Abstract: A military vehicle with a turbine engine mounted on an outer rear corner of the vehicle, with the engine being installed in a vertical orientation in order to save critical space. The vehicle is provided with access hatches which enable operators to easily work on the engine and related power generation components. The positioning of the engine allows the crew of the vehicle to be shielded from the heat, noise, and exhaust of the engine. The rear positioning of the engine also provides improved survivability of the engine, as well as a reduced heat signature for the vehicle. Finally, the unique engine placement provides easy access for maintenance and removal of components or component modules.

  • Patent number: 6817433
Abstract: Cab-over-engine freight vehicle with a driver's cab which is untiltable relative to the chassis and is situated above the vehicle's engine which is supported by the chassis. On each side of the vehicle there is a panel which is provided with steps, delineates the engine compartment laterally and is mounted pivotably on the chassis by means of a panel control arrangement which makes it possible to impart a displacement movement to the panel so that it swings outwards and rearwards in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle to an engine access position. Below the door of the driver's cab there is a cover which is hinged-mounted on the chassis and which in the closed position conceals the step panel situated inside it. The cab door and the cover below the door are detachably coupled with one another by a relative-motion absorbing control arrangement.

  • Patent number: 6666291
Abstract: A hood latch, hood and vehicle-mounting component that provide improved durability and aerodynamic properties as well as access to an under hood area. The latch is a two-part component. The latch is mounted under the hood and is only exposed where it latches to the latch catch on the vehicle-mounting component. The vehicle-mounting component can be engaged to the body of the vehicle or to the chassis of the vehicle. One vehicle-mounting component may be a fender extension. The latch is mounted to an underside of the hood and hence there is overlap of the hood over a portion of the latch. The latch catch may be mounted in a channel formed in the vehicle mounting-component. This design protects the latch from road debris and prevents snow and mud buildup in the latch area. This makes it less difficult for the operator or maintainer to access to open the hood. The mounting of the strap under the hood reduces corrosion to the latch hardware that allows for improved serviceability and longer lasting hardware.

  • Patent number: 6637531
Abstract: A hood and fender assembly mounting and latch system for use with an over-the-highway tractor having a frame supporting an engine, a cab and a hood and fender assembly. A hinge pivotally connects the hood and fender assembly to the frame. A hex-shaped torsion bar and damper are used to assist in the opening and closing of the hood and fender assembly. The latch system includes a receiver assembly attached to the frame. A pin assembly is attached to the hood and fender assembly at a distal location relative to the hinge. The receiver assembly receives the pin assembly when the hood and fender assembly is in a position enclosing the engine and locates and maintains the hood and fender assembly in a predetermined position relative to the frame, independent of the cab. The receiver assembly has a lock lever which is movable between a latched position at which it engages the pin assembly and an unlatched position. A movable handle is located within the cab.

  • Patent number: 6540283
Abstract: The invention related to a process for suspending on a vehicle frame a driving cab which has two-point suspension. Assembly involves the cab being lowered towards the frame by means of a lifting device so that a contact device fitted to the cab is caused to rest on the portions of a supporting device which protrude on either side of a supporting unit mounted on the frame. This means that the cab lies in a stable manner against the frame and that the fastening apertures of the contact device and of the supporting device are placed centrally to one another. The lifting device can therefore be released and the contact device be secured to the fastening device, thereby fixing the contact device relative to the supporting device but leaving the supporting device freely rotatable in the supporting unit.

  • Patent number: 6454035
Abstract: A tilt mechanism for pivoting a vehicle body panel relative to a vehicle chassis includes a pivot pin having a pivot pin axis. The pivot pin provides a single-point pivot attachment of the body panel to the chassis such that the body panel can articulate about the pivot pin axis relative to the chassis. A support member pivotably connects to the chassis about the pivot pin axis by the pivot pin. The support member has a tilt axis along a longitudinal extent of the support member. The tilt axis is perpendicular to the pivot pin axis. The support member supports the vehicle body panel weight through a pivotal connection between a support member end and the body panel. The pivotal connection allows the body panel to pivot relative to the chassis about the tilt axis via a bearing. A torsion bar is within the support member. One portion of the torsion bar is secured to the support member and another portion is secured to the body panel by a slot that receives a torsion bar end.
