  • Patent number: 6056086
Abstract: The device comprises, inside a case, a tightening cam (7) hinged about an axis (8) such that, unused, it does not engage a belaying rope (2) passing through the case and, when the device is subjected to a set acceleration downwards, it pivots towards the rope (2) to tighten it to the case with self-tightening effect. On the cam (7) is mounted a detecting roller (10) which co-operates with the rope (2) when the cam (7) is unused. A spring actuated (13) friction piece (12), at a certain rotational speed of the roller (10), subjects it to a resisting moment which triggers off the pivoting of the cam (7) in the tightening direction. A lever (15), to which the user is linked, engages in a unidirectional manner the cam (7) to push it in tightening position if the user falls. The device simultaneously triggers off several tightening effects in case of a fall.

Abstract: A controlled descent apparatus for lowering a person from an elevated place includes a cable which is wound on a drum and is unwound from the drum by the weight of the person to effect the descent. To limit the rate of descent, the drum turns as the cable is unwound and drives a positive displacement pump the output of which is through a flow control valve. The latter is set to permit a preselected maximum rate of flow so that the drum turns at a correlated maximum speed and thus limits the rate at which the cable is paid out during the descent. In the unlikely event that the valve fails to limit the speed of the drum, a centrifugally operated brake is automatically energized at a somewhat higher speed of the drum whereby the descent continues at a faster but still a safe rate.

  • Patent number: 4432437
Abstract: A controlled descent-speed, line system is described for the emergency evacuation of high office buildings, apartments and hotels. Included is a small diameter, high-strength steel cable of sufficient length wound upon a flanged reel. One reel flange is hobbed for drive chain teeth to drive a centrifugal clutch rotor hub sprocket. The out-drive clutch drum torques a linear actuator shaft which applies direct braking force to the cable reel. The load end of the cable is provided with a harness and umbrella deployable shield. The shield is stored as a slender, elongated column. Upon use, weight of the user collapses a number of straight spring strips into respective bows to approximate a spherical ball connected in the cable line above the users head to deflect heavy, falling debris and to maintain clearance between the face of the evacuated building and the user.

  • Patent number: 4359139
Abstract: A life saving equipment for roping down persons along a rope has a rack with an inlet opening and an outlet opening for the rope so that the rope passes the rack when the person is roped down. A rope pulley is rotatably mounted within the rack and has on its circumference a groove for the rope. The rope is guided in the groove for a looping angle of more than 180.degree.. The rope pulley can be braked by at least one brake member, the braking force of which can be adjusted by a setting mechanism influenced by the weight of the person to be roped down. A monitoring means checks the presence of the rope within the rack and has a movable sensor member pressed again the rope, preferably by means of at least one spring. The sensor member acts on a rope clamping device for clamping the rope when a rope shortage occurs.

  • Patent number: 4237999
Abstract: This device is associated with a scaffolding suspended from at least two winches and is adapted to automatically control a safety mechanism when the scaffolding is inclined beyond a predetermined limit angle to the horizontal. The scaffolding is pivoted at each end to a stirrup rigid with the safety device which is suspended to the hoisting cable through a link. A push-member rigid with the scaffolding engages, when the scaffolding is inclined, a connecting rod which actuates a lever for clamping the jaws on a safety cable passing through the safety device.
