Patent number: 8327982Abstract: An actuator/coupler device having a housing connected to a towed vehicle and a coupler attached to a towing vehicle, wherein the coupler is secured to the housing through a pair of opposing roller shafts extending through a slot within the coupler and a hole in the housing. Rollers secured to the roller shafts bear on a surface within the generally hollow interior of the coupler. A brake actuator secures within the coupler, wherein a first end of the brake actuator is secured to the rear roller shaft and a second end is fixed to the coupler, wherein the brake actuator is in operable communication with the brakes of the towed vehicle such that the brake actuator is actuated by movement of the coupler relative to the housing. A coupler ball socket is included within the coupler for releasable attachment of the coupler ball connected to the towing vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2002Date of Patent: December 11, 2012Assignee: Titan International, Inc.Inventor: Dave E. Patent number: 7168531Abstract: A self-contained trailer braking system comprises a fifth wheel hitch attached to a trailer frame, where the trailer hitch further comprises a kingpin to engage a fifth wheel of a towing vehicle. A sliding mechanism is attached to the kingpin, where the sliding mechanism is slidingly captured within the trailer frame and can move between a forward position and a rear position. A spring is attached to the sliding mechanism and the trailer frame, where the spring biases the sliding member to the forward position. A brake actuator is mounted to the trailer frame and linked to the sliding mechanism. A brake assembly is attached to the brake actuator, and a power supply is attached to the brake assembly, where power is applied to the brake assembly when the sliding mechanism is away from the forward position.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 2004Date of Patent: January 30, 2007Inventor: Steve Navarro

Patent number: 6027134Abstract: A removable trailer tongue for use with a towing vehicle and a trailer frame equipped with hydraulic brakes. The trailer tongue (10) can be removed without disconnecting any of the components of the hydraulic system. A first guide (20) and a second guide (22) slidingly receive a tongue (10). A first end (12) of the tongue (10) is equipped with a non-active hitch (18) that connects to the towing vehicle. The second end (14) of the tongue (10) has an aperture (38) defined therein. A brake assembly (24) attaches adjacent to or on the second guide (22), and the assembly (24) has an aperture (36) defined therein. The tongue (10) is inserted through the guides (20, 22) until the aperture (38) aligns with the aperture (36) in the brake assembly (24). In order to connect the tongue (10) to the trailer frame (16), a pin (40) is inserted through the apertures (36, 38) in the brake assembly (24) and the tongue (10).Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1996Date of Patent: February 22, 2000Assignee: American Signal CompanyInventors: Stephen P. Patent number: 5485900Abstract: An automatic brake lockout for restricting operation of a trailer hitch surge suppressor as a trailer is being backed by a pulling vehicle. The automatic brake lockout works on a two-part trailer hitch with a first member sliding toward a second member to activate the surge suppressor. When actuated, the automatic brake lockout restricts movement of the first member toward the second member to allow the trailer to be backed without the surge suppressor being actuated. Once the trailer has been adequately backed, the pulling vehicle need only move slightly forward to release the automatic brake lockout device and leave the surge suppressor operable.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1994Date of Patent: January 23, 1996Assignee: Dico, Inc.Inventor: Martin L. Denny
