  • Patent number: 5996744
Abstract: A shoe gap adjusting device includes a piston for pressing a brake shoe through a piston head, having a projecting end part with a boot cover for protecting an elastic boot that seals an end part of a cylinder body. A shoe gap adjusting ring is fitted on the end part of the piston in a non-rotatable manner. A elastic piece at the inner periphery of the cover axially extends through a cut-out in the ring and elastically supports the outer peripheral surface of the head so that the piston head is elastically attached to the piston. A tool can be inserted through an opening and engaged with an outer peripheral cut-out of the ring, for rotating the ring relative to a bolt and performing an adjustment of the shoe gap. The device simultaneously allows the protection for the elastic boot and realization of rotational operability of the shoe gap adjusting ring by the tool.

  • Patent number: 5921356
Abstract: An improved brake system includes a parking brake piston fixed to the backing plate of a brake friction material for a large vehicle. Service brake pistons are positioned about the parking brake piston. Both the service and parking brake may selectively actuate the brake. Upon actuation by the service brake piston, the parking brake piston moves with the backing plate. The parking brake is set by a parking brake actuator which is connected through a connector to the parking brake piston. When the service brake is set, it causes the connector to move with the parking brake piston. If adjustment is necessary, the connector will hit a stop, and adjustment of the connector along the parking brake piston will occur to compensate for wear on the friction material.

  • Patent number: 5918709
Abstract: An automatic brake adjustment for small transmissions, such as used with riding lawn mowers and the like. A brake disc rotated by the transmission is selectively engaged by friction producing pucks brought into engagement with the brake disc by a rotatable lever having a cam operating a puck. The axial position of the brake lever on its supporting shaft is determined by a threaded nut and automatic rotational nut adjustment is produced by a wheel having evenly spaced shoulders in the form of ratchet teeth defined upon its periphery selectively and sequentially engaged by a detent mounted upon the brake lever. When puck wear of sufficient extent occurs, the detent will sequentially engage the following shoulder of that previously engaged to rotate the brake lever adjustment nut during the next brake actuation thereby translating the brake lever and puck toward the brake disc to compensate for puck wear.

  • Patent number: 5246091
Abstract: A wheel cylinder has a body, pistons, boots and seals. A screw assembly positioned between the two pistons holds the pistons apart to maintain the specified clearance between the brake linings and the brake drum while the brake is released. If a predetermined amount of outward movement of the pistons occurs during brake actuation, the screw rotates with further piston outward movement. When the brake is released, the pistons return inwardly, and the screw is locked against reverse rotation by means of a clutch, preventing the pistons from returning more than the prior predetermined amount of outward movement before screw rotation began. A clutch seal on an extension of one clutch member seals in a piston cylinder section. The other clutch member is formed on that piston next to one end of the cylinder section. • Patent number: 4895228
Abstract: A slack adjuster has a non-rotatable fast-threaded output member (19) threadedly engaged by a pair of nuts (20, 21), one of the nuts being a first brake-force-transmitting nut (20) clutchable to prevent rotation thereof and the other being a second adjustment nut (21) clutchable to land. Relative axial movement of these nuts relative to the output member (19) is a measure of "excessive" brake clearance and restoration of the normal spacing between these nuts serves to restore brake clearance to "normal". The nuts (20, 21) are housed in a housing (8) which is non-rotatable but axially movable with respect to the output member (19). The first nut (20) is clutchable to a thrust member (26) resiliently loaded with a force which is overcome only by forces of the magnitude of braking forces transmitted through the slack adjuster.
