  • Patent number: 6019199
Abstract: A hydraulic caliper disk brake (10) according to the present invention includes a caliper base (46) that is supported by a folding triangular base (14) that generally includes a mounting base (30) and a support arm (54). The caliper base (46) is pinned to the mounting base (30) and the support arm (54) such that the caliper base (46) may pivot about the mounting base (30) when the pin connecting the support arm (54) to the mounting base is removed. The configuration allows the caliper assembly (12) to be pivoted out, away from a brake disk (16) such that the friction pads (142, 242) may be easily replaced. The caliper assembly (12) includes a self-activating wear adjuster (172) that functions to maintain a constant brake gap (174) between an active friction pad (142) and the brake disk (16). The caliper assembly (12) also includes a wear indicator in the form of a spring (134) that provides additional force that is fed back to the user when the friction pad (142) is significantly worn.

  • Patent number: 5246093
Abstract: A drum brake assembly including a brake member comprised of a substantially circular shoe having a radially outer face on which at least one lining is mounted. The shoe is made from a high strength resilient material and is of substantially constant cross-section along its entire length. The brake member is arranged to be diametrically expanded by an actuation device on the brake assembly. When the actuation device is released the resilience of the shoe material causes the shoe to diametrically contract. The lining may be machined to a circular form prior to the brake member being fitted to the brake assembly, and that machining is preferably done after the shoe has been expanded a predetermined extent. The disclosure extends to a method of manufacturing a brake member and to a brake member for a drum brake assembly.

  • Patent number: 5224571
Abstract: A brake force adjuster for a vehicle brake especially for a bicycle brake includes a hanger holding a hanging wire secured with a pair of brake shoes for operatively clamping a wheel rim of a vehicle wheel for braking purpose, an adjustable locking latch resiliently tensioned on the hanger normally frictionally locking a braking wire remotely connected to a brake lever to be operated by a vehicle driver, and a locking bolt locking the braking wire on the hanger. When unlocking the locking bolt and pulling the adjustable locking latch, the hanger may be freely moved along the braking wire for adjusting a clamping force of the braking shoes. After releasing the locking latch, the locking latch will resiliently frictionally lock the braking wire which is then firmly locked by the locking bolt also formed on the hanger. Therefore a brake force adjuster of a vehicle brake can be easily assembled and adjusted.

Abstract: A roller skate brake in which the wheel support which rotatably couples the skate's wheels to the boot is slotted, allowing the support to flex when the skater bears down with the heel. Such flexing compresses the support, forcing a brake shoe against the skate's rear wheel. The braking force varies in proportion to the applied force, and is released when the skater stops bearing down. A roller skate starter aids initial propulsion of a roller skate's wheels. The starter incorporates a restraining mechanism which prevents reverse rotation of the skate's toe wheel, while allowing forward rotation thereof.

Abstract: An adjusting device is disclosed for the brake shoes of inside shoe brakes. The adjusting device includes two levers which are articulated on a carrier at a lateral distance from one another. The levers each engage on one of two adjacent brake shoe ends and are jointly in engagement with a frustoconical endpiece of an actuating member guided rotatably on the carrier in a threaded bore provided between the levers and extending in parallel with a brake drum axis. During the rotation of the actuating member for the adjustment of the brake shoes, the two levers are pivoted in directions opposite to one another, being supported respectively on one of two mutually opposite edges of the brake-shoe webs so as to surround these. The adjusting device is merely attached by its levers on to the brake shoe webs so it can also execute self-reinforcing floating movements of the brake shoes in dual servo-brakes.

A brake lever is actuated by a pneumatic cylinder and carries a worm gear which is mounted for turning with the lever, and also independently of the lever. The worm gear is splined for non-rotatable reception of a brake shaft. A saddle pinned to the lever carries a tapered worm which meshes with the worm gear. The worm gear is axially split, and the two halves thereof are forced axially away from one another by the worm under load into engagement with surfaces fixed relative to the lever for frictionally fixing said gear relative to said lever. The tapered worm also wedges the periphery of the gear into frictional engagement with a surrounding part of the lever. The worm is turnable to adjust the rotational position of the gear and hence of the brake shaft when not under load, and the worm is lockable in adjusted position.

Abstract: The invention concerns a disc brake with a caliper (10) sliding on a fixed support (12) incorporating a first friction component (14) which is capable of being applied against a surface of a brake disc by way of a brake actuator through a plunger (28). A second friction component is capable of being applied against the other surface of the disc through the sliding caliper. Rotation of the plunger (28) is capable of causing the latter to move axially relative to the brake actuator. The disc brake incorporates an adjusting and retaining component (44) having a fork (40) at one of its ends (42) which is intended to cooperate with complementary surfaces (38) formed on the plunger (28) and having a hole (48) at its other end (46) by way of which the component (44) is immobilized, through a screw (50), relative to the first friction component (14).

At least one braking pad is actuable to apply a braking force in response to predetermined axial displacement of the brake actuator. The ramp includes at least one contoured camming surface inclined in a counterclockwise direction and at least one contoured camming surface inclined in a clockwise direction. There is a crosshole or passage in the body and a worm gear wheel is positioned in the passage for mounting on a brake operating shaft. There is a slot formed in the body and opening into the passage. The slot has three mutually perpendicular surfaces and is of a size and shape to hold a worm gear and to provide for threaded engagement of the worm gear and the worm gear wheel. There is a bore in the body which is generally perpendicular to one of the slot's mutually perpendicular surfaces. A shaft is positioned in the bore and coaxially mounts the worm gear for adjustment thereof. The bore is oversized relative to the shaft, thereby providing no bearing support therefor.

  • Patent number: 4499976
Abstract: A slack adjuster is for a disc brake of the type which includes a disc mounted for rotation about an axle and a caliper brake having a housing mounted on the axle in alignment with a friction surface of the disc. A braking piston is mounted in the housing for axial movement toward and away from the friction surface of the disc. Brake actuation produces rotating movement of a powershaft mounted in the housing which will in turn produce a corresponding axial movement of the braking piston through a non-rotating powershaft nut. An adjusting sleeve is between the piston and the powershaft nut and is threadably coupled to the piston and capable of rotation relative thereto to adjust the axial position of the piston. The adjusting sleeve is capable of rotating in a direction which will cause the piston to be adjusted toward the disc and is prevented from rotating in the opposite direction by a one-way clutch shaft between the adjusting sleeve and the housing.
