Screw Patents (Class 188/202)
  • Patent number: 4408682
Abstract: An axial type rail vehicle slack adjuster has a barrel (4) with a set of circumferential notches (62) retaining elements (62, 55, 57) against axial movement along the barrel which coact with slack adjuster mechanism elements (25, 54, 60) to stop axial movement thereof relative to the barrel notch.

  • Patent number: 4405037
Abstract: A rail vehicle slack adjuster of the double-acting, clearance-sensing, axial type has an elongated barrel (4), a pull means (6, 48), a non-rotatable spindle (2), a leader unit (8-27) and an adjuster unit (29-52) cooperating with the spindle in the barrel, and a barrel spring (53) acting on the adjuster unit. A leader nut (8) in the leader unit can be clutched (13-16) to the barrel under the action of a pay-out spring (21). An adjuster nut (29) in the adjuster unit can be clutched to the pull means. The adjuster unit (29-52) includes a non-rotatable spline sleeve (40) acted on by the pulling brake force from the pull means (6, 48) and the opposite force from the barrel spring (53). The leader nut (8) is provided with a telescope sleeve (11) and a leader ring (27), both only axially movable on the leader nut and being clutchable to the spline sleeve. The leader nut is also provided with declutching means (13-15) enabling the nut to rotate in spite of the clutch engagement (16) with the barrel (4).

  • Patent number: 4402388
Abstract: A braking apparatus for rail vehicles has a brake actuating unit to one side of the vehicle wheel. A pair of brake shoes oppositely disposed on both sides of the wheel can be pressed against the contact surface of the wheel. A first vertical braking lever is pivotable under a force from the brake actuating unit with respect to the contact force exerted by the first brake shoe. A second vertical braking lever is similarly connected to the other brake shoe. The lower ends of both braking levers are pivotally connected with two traverse members each interconnecting the ends of two parallel tie rods which extent horizontally across both faces of the vehicle wheel. The play or clearance in the application of the brake shoes to the wheel contact surface is automatically adjusted by a self-actuating device in each tie rod. Each adjusting device comprises a screw coupling consisting of a nut threaded on a spindle shaft.

  • Patent number: 4396097
Abstract: A vehicle wheel brake, particularly for a railway vehicle, has an elongate friction pad for engagement with a braking surface. In order to provide for adjustment of the pad without excessive length of the brake, the friction pad is hollow and an elongate adjuster member is located within the friction pad. Relative rotation of the pad and adjuster member, which occurs when there is excessive wear of the friction material, causes axial movement of the friction material to compensate for the wear.

  • Patent number: 4274300
Abstract: Apparatus of increased simplicity, reliability and economy is provided for automatically maintaining the tautness of a mechanical coupling such as commonly employed, for example, between a vehicular brake and its actuating mechanism, which would otherwise be subject to loosening during normal use as a result of wear or the like. The apparatus, although also utilizable with mechanical couplings employing rigid connecting links, is especially suited for use with couplings employing flexible cables or the like, wherein it need only be interposed in series with the cabling between the actuating mechanism and the device actuatable thereby, thereby adapting the apparatus for use in a variety of applications in which control cable couplings are employed.

  • Patent number: 4138002
Abstract: A one-nut slack adjuster with a nut axially disposed having clutch surfaces and on non-self-locking engagement on a spindle coaxially positioned within a tube moving axially to apply brakes has a spring biased thrust bearing held forwardly on the nut in the brake application direction disposed to engage a fixed position control member and when the nut is moved axially forwardly a predetermined desired slack distance thereby to bias the nut backwardly. A second trust bearing on this nut is placed forward of the control member to engage it at a distance from rest less than the clutch separation distance. In a double acting embodiment a further trust bearing spring biased between the nut and tube in a position forward of the control member holds the nut in a forward direction in clutch engagement.A further feature is a barrel spring arrangement foreshortening the assembly by a sleeve converting two coaxially disposed spring sections in series.

  • Patent number: 4082165
Abstract: A brake assembly comprises opposed brake parts arranged to be applied in unison to associated rotor surfaces. Each brake part comprises a friction pad or shoe and an adjustable length strut which transmits brake-actuating forces to the friction pad and which adjusts the position of the friction pad relative to the rotor surface to compensate for wear. Also provided is an equalizing device which ensures that the lengths of the adjustable struts are adjusted equally.
