  • Patent number: 4585098
Abstract: A friction band comprising an arcuate band or strap made of a filament-reinforced plastic material. The plastic material is preferably a thermosetting epoxy which provides a matrix in which are embedded or encapsulated a plurality of long-strand continuous filaments of glass or the like. The band is lined with a friction lining, and is reinforced by a fibrous bleeder cloth between the band and the friction lining. A special fixture applies tension to the band assembly to hold the filaments in tension during the curing of the plastic material forming the matrix of the band.

  • Patent number: 4456100
Abstract: An band brake mechanism for an automatic transmission of an automobile, wherein a size and form of a band hoop is determined so that the band hoop may occupy a position by the elasticity in which any portion of the band hoop is not in contact with a drum when the band hoop is in set position before braking.Projections formed in one body with a housing are arranged around the band hoop for supporting and locating the band hoop in the set position, so that the full length of the band hoop keeps the constant space to the peripheral surface of the drum.

  • Patent number: 4363385
Abstract: An end connection for a replacement transmission brake band enables the band to be inserted longitudinally into the space between transmission drum and housing. The end connection comprises a removable bracket which is made part of the modified replacement transmission brake band. The bracket is placed on the modified transmission brake band after insertion of the modified transmission brake band into the space between transmission housing and brake drum. The bracket replaces the former permanently mounted end connection of the modified transmission brake band. The invention includes a method for converting a conventional end connection to the replaceable end construction of the present invention.

  • Patent number: 4311221
Abstract: An end connection for a transmission brake band enabling the band to be inserted longitudinally into the space between the transmission brake band drum and the transmission housing to facilitate replacement of transmission brake bands without requiring disassembly of the transmission housing. The end connection comprises a modification and conversion of a popular and readily available brake band to adapt said brake band to an end connection configuration which permits ready insertion of the brake band as described above. As modified the end connection comprises an end plate welded to the brake band strap having a reverse bend segment in which is seated a bracket clip having a cutout which interlocks with the end plate and having an extending tang portion or pocket engageable with a load applying piston rod and strut to selectively tighten the brake band.

  • Patent number: 4226312
Abstract: The disclosure provides for a number of improvements in a brake-clutch mechanism wherein a drum is carried on the drive member for driving engagement by clutch shoes carried by the driven member. The clutch shoes are normally biased into driving engagement with the drum and a brake band is utilized to move the clutch shoes out of engagement with the drum and to stop rotation of the driven member without interrupting the rotation of the drive member. The improvements relate to a higher torque capability for the mechanism, the exclusion of foreign matter from the mechanism, the mounting for the brake band, the use of the brake band to aid in keeping the braking surfaces clean, and provision for cut-off of the power source in the event the brake band should fail. The disclosure further contemplates a novel arrangement for driving and controlling the chain sprocket of a chain saw.

  • Patent number: 4211149
Abstract: A radially expandable and contractable split lock ring selectively to unlock and lock a piston and cylinder actuator includes at least one lapped axially extending surface substantially conforming to the surface of the cylinder or piston with which it is in sliding contact when in the unlocked position. The split lock ring has each of its ends slightly inwardly tapered to reduce the thickness thereof to distribute the bending load uniformly throughout the ring and has a flat on the outer diametrical surface diametrically opposed from such tapered ends to provide load carrying symmetry for the ring.

  • Patent number: 4184572
Abstract: A device for temporarily holding fast a free circular element with respect to a fixed circular element having circular segments with tangential ramps and a rigid ring with rollers axially rotatable thereon for local thrust against the ramps to cause locking of the free circular element with respect to the fixed circular element. Clevises bearing axial grooved rollers riding on the rigid ring, with the clevises connected to the segments by springs, providing an elastic restoring force to release the free circular element with respect to the fixed circular element.

  • Patent number: 3999633
Abstract: The invention relates to a band pressing shoe. Such shoe includes a rigid body to which is attached a thin flexible and inextensible strip. When the rigid body is subjected to a pressing thrust, the strip assumes an arcuate shape and tautens. Between the strip and the band are interposed one or more fluid cushions supplied from a manifold through an elastic mattress made of a cellular material. The pressing shoe can be supplied in all cases where it is required to drive or restrain a band running over a cylinder (e.g. a roller, drum, pulley or the like), examples being conveyor belts, transmission belts, metal strips undergoing splitting, planing or coiling, and so forth.
