Foot Valve Patents (Class 188/322.14)
  • Patent number: 6959796
Abstract: A damper includes an outer cylinder and an inner cylinder. The inner cylinder is disposed inside the outer cylinder and contains a rod and valve to define an upper working chamber and a lower working chamber. An adjustable valve portion fluidly communicates the upper working chamber with a reserve chamber. The adjustable valve portion is positioned inside the outer cylinder and coaxially aligned with the axis of the outer cylinder and the inner cylinder. As a result, the adjustable valve portion does not extend radially from the damper to potentially obstruct other vehicle elements or cause damage to the adjustable valve portion.

  • Patent number: 6851528
Abstract: A shock absorber includes a shock rod and piston which are disposed within a fluid chamber within a shock body. The piston separates the shock body fluid chamber into a compression fluid chamber and a rebound fluid chamber. A reservoir fluid chamber accommodates the entry of the shock rod into the fluid chamber as the shock absorber compresses under shock forces. The compression fluid chamber is in fluid communication with the reservoir fluid chamber through a third chamber or passage. A first valve may control passage of fluid from the compression fluid chamber into the passage. Second and third valves may be disposed within the passage in parallel with each other and in series with the first valve. The third valve may include an easily accessible knob disposed outside the shock body.

  • Patent number: 6672436
Abstract: A shock absorber includes a valve assembly with a low speed oil flow circuit and a mid/high speed oil flow circuit. Both circuits control fluid flow through the valve assembly in the same direction. The low speed oil flow circuit is tunable in order to provide low speed damping to improve both the vehicle control and handling. The tuning of the low speed oil flow circuit is accomplished by supporting a low speed valve disc at a position radially inward of its outer edge to control the rate at which the low speed oil flow circuit opens. The valve assembly of the present invention can be located within either a base valve assembly or a piston valve assembly.

  • Patent number: 6651964
Abstract: An arrangement forms part of a shock absorber (1) and is intended to produce distinct longitudinal displacements of an element (7) in response to longitudinal displacements of a screw (15). The displacement directions of the screw and the element diverge and the displacement of the element is designed to occur against the action of a force (14) on the element. The screw is designed with a tapered or inclined surface (17) and the element, or a part related thereto, is pressed against the surface by the said force (14). Interacting sections of the surface and the element, or the part, are designed with structures that produce the said distinct longitudinal displacement positions of the element when acted upon by the member. In this way the element actuation function and that of producing the distinct positions can be incorporated into a relatively simple and compact construction.

Abstract: The invention comprises a frictional damping strut. The strut comprises an inner cylinder that slides within an outer casing. A spring biases the inner cylinder away from the outer casing in an axial direction. A first wedge member cooperatively engages a second wedge member. The first wedge member having a frictional engagement with the inner cylinder such that when the inner cylinder is pressed into the outer casing the first wedge member bears upon the second wedge member causing the first wedge member to radially expand, thereby increasing a frictional force between the first wedge member and the inner cylinder. A second spring preloads the first wedge member against the second wedge member. A belt tensioner may incorporate the damping strut to preload a belt and damp belt oscillations.

  • Patent number: 6343677
Abstract: The motor vehicle shock absorber selectively enables the selective realtime adjustments to the shock absorber damping based on driving conditions and desired driving characteristics. The adjustments are achieved by using a solenoid assembly to exert a valve closing force, which is selectively adjustable, on the compression valve and so as to control the damping characterization of a shock absorber. The design and construction of the compression head assembly and end cap assembly of the shock absorber permit these assemblies to be manufactured as subassemblies and then brought together and expeditiously assembled so as to minimize the cost of manufacturing the shock absorber.

  • Patent number: 6334516
Abstract: A twin tube shock absorber having inner and outer tube with an annular reservoir between the tubes. A piston in the inner tube divides the inner tube into an upper chamber and a lower chamber and valves through the piston control stiffness of the shock absorber. An acceleration sensitive valve assembly mounted in the base valve makes the shock absorber “soft” upon downward acceleration of the wheel of the vehicle in which the shock absorber is mounted. The valve assembly includes a port for fluid communication between the lower chamber and a conduit, and an inertial mass blocking the port in a port-closed position and not blocking the port in a port-open position. The inertial mass is normally in a lower port-closed position in absence of downward acceleration of the tubes of the shock absorber. Upon downward acceleration of the tubes, the inertial mass moves upwardly toward a port-open position where fluid flow through the port is not blocked.
