Abstract: A parking brake actuation system mounted to a tail shaft of a vehicle's transmission is operably connected to a brake assembly of the vehicle having brake pads housed within a brake drum. The parking brake actuation system includes a mounting bracket coupled to the tail shaft of the vehicle's transmission, an actuator coupled to the mounting bracket, and a bell crank coupled to the tail shaft of the vehicle's transmission and the actuator, and also connected to an engagement cam by a linkage assembly. Actuation of the actuator to a retracted position permits rotational movement of the bell crank to transfer through the linkage assembly to engage the pair of brake pads with the brake drum. Actuation of the actuator to an extended position permits rotational movement of the bell crank to transfer through the linkage assembly to disengage the pair of brake pads from the brake drum.

Abstract: An actuator for a drum brake including a plunger connected through a resilient member to a linkage attached to a web on a brake shoe. A rod extends from the plunger and engages a lever arm that is pivotally retained on the web. The lever engages an extendable strut of an adjuster arrangement through which a running clearance is maintained between the brake shoe and a drum. During a brake application, pressurization fluid acts on the plunger to develop an operational force that is communicated through the resilient member to move the brake shoe into engagement with a drum. Should the operational force overcome the resilient member, the plunger moves toward the linkage and a reactive force is applied through the rod that acts through the lever arm to prevent a pawl from rotating such that a current length of the strut and correspondingly a current running clearance is sustained.

The invented device automatically adjusts the slack, which develops due to the wearing of brake liners and the drum. When the angular movement of the Lever Housing (1) exceeds the desired limit due to the wear, the internal device adjusts the excess clearance of slack automatically. The parts consist of a Worm Wheel (3); an enmeshing Worm Shaft (4); a Paul (6); a Leaf Spring (1); a Ratchet cylinder (5); an Acuator Rod (7); a Guide (9); an End Connector (8); a Clevis (2); and Clevis Pins (2A) and 2(B). Abstract: A slack adjuster for a brake system is provided that includes a housing with a gear disposed in the housing. The gear has outer circumferential teeth. An adjustment assembly is disposed within the housing and includes first and second members adjacent and rotatable relative to one another. The first member has a worm portion engaging the teeth of the gear. The second member includes an end portion, which typically extends through the housing for receiving manual adjustment from a technician using a tool. The technician applies a rotational adjustment input on the end portion for adjusting the position of the gear, which adjusts the length of a brake actuator push rod to within a desired range. A clutch assembly interconnects the first and second members to limit torque transfer from the second member to the first member produced in response to the rotational adjustment input.

  • Patent number: 6622833
Abstract: The invention relates to a drum brake device (10), which is provided as a wheel brake for a motor vehicle. The invention proposes embodying the drum brake device (10) with a brake belt (14), which is disposed inside a brake drum (12) and can flex in the radial direction of the brake drum (12). Thrust exerted on one end (18) of the brake belt (14) with a simultaneous bracing of the other end (20) of the brake belt (14) causes the brake belt (14) to be pressed against the brake drum (12) from the inside and produces a braking moment. The invention has the advantage that a friction force exerted on the brake belt (14) by the brake drum (12) augments the thrust on the end (18) of the brake belt (14) and thus boosts the braking moment. Another advantage is that the brake belt (14) always rests uniformly against the brake drum (12) over its entire circumference, even, for example, when the brake drum (12) expands due to heating.

  • Patent number: 6568513
Abstract: An adjustment arrangement for a non-servo drum brake having a hydraulic actuator that engages a first web of a first brake shoe and a second web of a second brake shoe. The hydraulic actuator on receiving a hydraulic input develops an actuation force for moving the first and second brake shoes from a rest position into engagement with a rotatable member to effect a brake application. An extendible member, that is connected to the first web and the second web, is extendable to define a running clearance in a rest position between the first and second brake shoes and the rotatable member. A lever arm, that is mounted on the first web, engages the extendable member. A resilient member extends between the lever to the second web to urge the first and second webs into engagement with the hydraulic actuator. The lever arm pivots on the first web as the first web moves through the running clearance during a brake application.

  • Patent number: 6464046
Abstract: A parking brake actuating mechanism in which a first lever (11) acts on a first brake shoe web (13) and a second lever (15) pivoted on the first lever (11) acts on a second brake shoe web (17). The first lever (11) includes an actuating cable abutment formation (31′) against which an actuating cable nipple (28) on the free end of a cable (25) is drawn to move the first lever to increase the effective length of the mechanism and hence move the associated brake shoes. The first lever (11) is of hollow form defining a guide passage (29) which directs the free end of the cable from an aperture (24) in the backplate (23) of the associated brake to a location adjacent the abutment formation (31′) to enable the nipple (28) to be engaged with the formation (31′). A portion (11′) of the first lever outside the guide passage (29) may guide the cable from the end of the passage towards the abutment formation (31′).

  • Patent number: 6408993
Abstract: A brake lever is to be attached to a splined S-cam shaft of an automotive drum brake and to be connected to a brake cylinder push rod. The lever has a control arrangement for transmitting a control movement from a control disc with a reference point to a clutch wheel of the lever mechanism depending on the angular movement of the brake lever. The control disc is in gear engagement with a pinion, and an adjustment screw coaxial with the pinion is in engagement with the clutch wheel. A cylindrical driver is axially but non-rotatably movable in relation to the pinion coaxial therewith and forms a one-way clutch with a unit including the adjustment screw, which is axially movable a distance corresponding to a desired control distance or A-measure for the brake lever, the one-way clutch being spring-biased into engagement.
