Patent number: 5491876Abstract: Disclosed are various needle-based devices for individualizing single fibers and other entities from a fibrous mass, particularly for testing purposes. In one embodiment, an accelerated pin drafting machine has a plurality of combing elements which sequentially pierce a fiber mat and move within a drafting zone with increasing distance between adjacent combing elements. The accelerated pin drafting machine in turn feeds a fiber individualizer. In another embodiment, a comb-like needle sampler is provided which moves past a perforated plate such that portions of fibrous material protruding through the perforations are loaded onto the needle sampler. An elastomer clamping feedroll moves against the needles to clamp the sample, and then rotates to gradually feed fibers from the sampler. As an alternative to the elastomer clamping feedroll, a clamping block presses against the needles, and the needles are slowly retracted to gradually release fibers.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1994Date of Patent: February 20, 1996Assignee: Zellweger Uster, Inc.Inventors: Frederick M. Patent number: 4635323Abstract: A drawhead for drawing equipment having a plurality of fallers or the like disposed parallel to each other along a closed guideway at a predetermined distance from one another. In such a drawhead it is expected to achieve the transfer of large forces parallel to the guideway in a simple manner, while avoiding all sliding friction. This is achieved by equipping each faller with at least two pivot bearing elements of differing diameters placed axially next to each other in such a way that the pivot bearing elements of adjacent fallers are disposed in such a way that two adjacent pivot bearing elements with smaller diameters adjoin each pivot bearing element with a larger diameter and that two pivot bearing elements having larger diameters adjoin each pivot bearing element with a smaller diameter.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1985Date of Patent: January 13, 1987Assignee: Staedtler & UhlInventor: Josef Egerer

Patent number: 4293983Abstract: A high speed gill box having an upper head and lower head each of which contains a compliment of individual unconnected faller bars constrained to move in a smooth closed loop path. Each head is constructed to engage the associated faller bars outside of the pinned area to guide the faller bars through the closed loop path. Cam tracks are provided outside of the faller bar guide paths for engaging a crank arm extending away from the main pinned portion of each faller bar to provide proper orientation as the faller bar moves along its fixed path. Sprocket drives are provided in each head for engaging some of the faller bars and pushing them along the closed loop path.
