    Abstract: In a roller-style feed mechanism, a feed roll is opened and closed for the purpose of pilot release using a direct-coupled servo motor as opposed to pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders. The electronically controlled servo motor drives a rotating shaft with eccentric cams that interact with cam followers causing the feed rollers separate for pilot release. The cam followers produce a force sufficient to overcome nip pressure when separating the feed rollers during pilot release. The electronically controlled servo motor is preferably operative to sense the point where the cams contact the cam followers after the upper feed roller is closed on the feed material, and automatically sense resistance to determine where the upper roll begins to lift so as to compensate for different material thicknesses.

    Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for monitoring sliver and yarn characteristics. Transverse waves are generated relative to the sliver or yarn. At least one acoustic sensor is in contact with the sliver or yarn for detecting waves coupled to the sliver or yarn and for generating a signal. The generated signal is processed to identify the predefined characteristics including sliver or yarn linear density. The transverse waves can be generated with a high-powered acoustic transmitter spaced relative to the sliver or yarn with large amplitude pulses having a central frequency in a range between 20 KHz and 40 KHz applied to the transmitter. The transverse waves can be generated by mechanically agitating the sliver or yarn with a tapping member.

The control arrangement changes the measuring signal into an actual control signal as a function of operational conditions to compensate for influences derived from the operational conditions and affecting measuring results. The control signal is applied to the drive.

    Abstract: A drawing unit contains two drawing zones, one of which is variable and driven by two motors. The desired draw is set by means of a control of the speed of one of the motors, preferably of the motor for the predrawing zone. This control of the speed is carried out by way of a draw correction value which is calculated from the deviation between the desired draw and the actual draw calculated from the speed of the fibre sliver at the entrance and at the exit of the drawing unit.     Abstract: An autoleveller draw frame achieves changes in the draft by changing the supply speed. The can press nevertheless works evenly. A storage device between the sliver calenders and the can press compensates for changes in the amount of supplied sliver. The storage device can be arranged in such a way that it allows a "flying change of cans." In one aspect, between the sliver calenders and the can press, the sliver forms a hanging loop which varies in depth, depending upon any changes in the supply speed of the sliver, while the can press operates relatively evenly and is not required to be accelerated or braked in response to changes in the supply speed. In another aspect, the storage device includes a conveyor belt arrangement between the supply of the sliver and the can press. Sliver loops are formed on an upper conveyor belt strand, whereafter they are deflected to a lower conveyor belt strand and then fed to the can press.

    Abstract: For use in a spinning mill, the apparatus is used to even up the mass of sliver being conveyed, for manufacturing perfect roving yarns. The evening up takes place by measuring the thickness of the sliver after it has been compressed to a certain volume in a gap between two rollers. One roller is rigidly arranged, whereas the other is supported in a resilient manner or has a resilient portion. Movements by the resilient roller are indicative of the extent of the deviations in the thickness of the conveyed sliver, and the movements of the resilient roller are monitored by a sensor which sends signals for controlling devices for facilitating the evening up the amount of the sliver mass being fed. By means of the arrangement of rollers, the apparatus does not generate oscillations which would alter the measured results from the measuring rollers under certain operational conditions.

By positionally fixing the feed plate during the detection operation different forces arise, depending upon the thickness or density of the fiber mass, in the nipping zone between the feed roll and the feed plate.

    Abstract: A fiber infeed device supplies fiber material to a textile machine, such as a card, and comprises a driven rotatable feed roll and feed plate. The feed plate can be pivoted into an operating position against a stop during throughpass of the fiber material. A substantially invariable size nipping zone is thus formed between the driven rotatable feed roll and the stationary feed plate in which a property of the throughpassing fiber material representative of its instantaneous thickness and thus variations thereof can be detected. By positionally fixing the feed plate, for instance, different forces are applied thereto in the nipping zone where the fiber material is compacted. The arising variable forces enable ascertaining thickness variations of the infed fiber material.
