    Abstract: A coin handling system prevents jamming of the coin chutes of coin operated machines and keeps foreign objects out of coin validators and other internal mechanisms of coin operated machines. A coin chute 15 guides coins into the coin validator 24. An exit end of coin chute 15 is moved from a rest position above the coin validator 24 to a position above a return chute 25. Coin chute 15 then separates into two pieces, causing large foreign matter to fall out of the coin chute 15. Foreign objects that are pushed into coin chute 15 are forced out of coin chute 15 by slots 30 formed on the back edge of coin chute 15. Foreign objects are thus prevented from going further into coin chute 15 and coin validator 24. A bevelled edge 29 is formed on an edge of chute piece 23, one of two pieces forming coin chute 15. Foreign objects are pushed into coin chute 15, it impacts bevelled edge 29, causing coin chute 15 to separate into two chute pieces.

    Abstract: In a coin sorting device which rolls a coin along a sorting passage and which carries out a sorting operation for the coin during movement of the coin, it is readily possible to remove unnecessary material from the sorting passage. The unnecessary material may be surface material which is separated from the coin. If the unnecessary material is left in the sorting passage, it becomes one of factors which cause an error in the sorting operation. Inasmuch as the unnecessary material can be readily removed from the sorting passage, reliability is improved as regards the sorting operation. For removing the unnecessary material, a plurality of through holes may be made to a bottom of the sorting passage. A roller member may be used at the bottom of the sorting passage instead of making the through holes.

    Abstract: A plate is provided with a horizontal coin slot. The slot has a lower wall at an angle of about 45.degree. and a upper wall parallel to the lower wall. Two rails having facing coin-retaining grooves running end-to-end are attached to the rear of the plate at opposite ends of the slot. The grooves slope downwardly from the slot at the same angle as the lower wall of the slot. Desired coins follow the chute formed by the slot and grooves, while undersized coins and foreign objects fall between the rails. A coin-orienting member may be added above the rails to help orient the coin in the chute.

    Abstract: A coin chute includes a coin entrance, clear-out apparatus, coin processing apparatus, a return chute and a coin ejector. The clear-out apparatus is positioned between the coin entrance and the coin processing apparatus. It comprises a cavity for trapping unwanted material stuffed into the coin entrance and a pair of sidewalls (inner and outer) that move in response to the operation of the coin ejector. A deflector plate, positioned within the cavity, assists in trapping the unwanted material. The outer sidewall permits trapped material to fall into the return chute while the inner sidewall pushes this material into the return chute. The coin ejector includes an actuator that is operatively connected to the sidewalls of the clear-out apparatus by a helical spring whose restorative force is sufficient to urge material trapped within the cavity into the return chute, but not sufficient to damage the coin ejector when excessive force is applied to the actuator.
