Patent number: 8727099Abstract: The present disclosure provides workpiece feed systems, methods and assemblies comprising one or more tapered feed rolls positioned at an angle to incoming workpieces. The tapered feed rolls may pull individual workpieces toward a guide while gradually accelerating the workpieces and altering their direction of travel. Patent number: 7878319Abstract: A sorting switch for diverting articles from one or more infeed conveyors to two or more outfeed conveyors. A cannulae pre-alignment conveyor receives articles from one or more infeed conveyors and selectively diverts individual articles into two or more lateral regions for delivery to an alignment conveyor downstream. The alignment conveyor more precisely aligns the articles within each of the regions for delivery to outfeed conveyors at the downstream end of the alignment conveyor. The alignment and pre-alignment conveyors are realized as belt conveyors with rollers arranged to rotate universally or on axes in specific orientations. In some versions, a belt's rollers roll on bearing surfaces whenever the belt is advancing. In other versions, rollers are selective actuated by moving bearing surfaces. In yet other versions, rollers are not contacted by bearing surfaces at all.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2006Date of Patent: February 1, 2011Assignee: Laitram, L.L.C.Inventors: Mark Costanzo, Eric M. Publication number: 20100059334Abstract: A conveyor using a roller belt with rollers arranged to rotate on oblique axes to urge articles toward a side guide. The conveyor includes an oblique-roller belt supported on a carryway for running in a direction of belt travel. Rollers extend above an outer conveying surface of the belt without contact with the carryway. Each roller rotates on an axis oblique to the direction of belt travel and intersects the side guide downstream of the roller's position. A retractable stop is movable to and from a blocking position along the carryway. In the blocking position, the stop blocks the conveyed articles from advancing in the direction of belt travel. The rollers underlying the blocked articles rotate as the belt runs by contact with the articles. The rotating rollers provide a component of force to the blocked articles directed toward the side guide to push the articles against the side guide or other articles as they accumulate under low pressure upstream of the stop.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 17, 2009Publication date: March 11, 2010Applicant: LAITRAM, L.L.C.Inventors: David W. Patent number: 7581632Abstract: A narrow belt conveyor system is provided with a pop-up style diverter comprising a plurality of rows of diverter wheels in which each row raises and lowers independently of any of the other rows. Thus, each row of diverter wheels can be raised before the leading edge of a conveyed article reaches that particular row of diverter wheels and lowered after the trailing edge of the conveyed article has cleared that row. This permits the spacing between the articles to be greatly reduced, greatly increasing the article throughput rate and/or reducing the conveyor speed while achieving the same throughput rate.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 2007Date of Patent: September 1, 2009Assignee: TGW-Ermanco Inc.Inventors: Matthew Earl Wallace, Andew Knaut

Patent number: 7040480Abstract: A conveyor comprising an outer roller-top belt loop and an inner drive belt loop inside the outer belt loop for accurate and smooth control of conveyed articles. Rollers on the outer belt loop extend beyond outer and inner sides of the roller-top belt. The inner drive belt has an outer surface that frictionally contacts the rollers beneath the inner side of the outer belt loop along an article-conveying carryway portion of the conveying path. Relative motion between the two belts causes the drive belt to rotate the rollers it contacts. The outer belt loop and the inner belt loop can be driven at different speeds by separate drives. The relative speeds of the two belts determine the direction and speed of rotation of the rollers.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 2004Date of Patent: May 9, 2006Assignee: Laitram, L.L.C.Inventor: Kyle J. Patent number: 7007792Abstract: A conveyor system including a pair of roller-top belts arranged side by side, each individually controllable to cause articles conveyed atop both to rotate into preferred orientations. The roller-top belts include rollers that rotate about axes oblique to the direction of belt travel. The rollers on each belt direct conveyed articles toward the other belt as the belts advance in the direction of belt travel and the rollers contact an underlying bearing surface in rolling contact. The rotation of the rollers exerts a force on articles conveyed atop the rollers. The force has a component directed toward the other belt and another component directed downstream. A sensor array senses the footprint of an article at an upstream location and sends signals to a controller that determines the size and orientation of the article to selectively stop one or the other roller-top belt if necessary to rotate the article to change its orientation.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 2005Date of Patent: March 7, 2006Assignee: Laitram, L.L.C.Inventor: Ronald H.
