  • Patent number: 8146172
Abstract: A method for creating garment cuffs includes applying a high-polymer heat-sealable material on a cuff area of the fabric used for the garment. The heat-sealable material and the fabric underneath are then cut with an ultrasonic cutter to form the cuff and concurrently finish the lower edges of the cuff. The heat-sealable material has properties that allow it to stretch from an equilibrium point in response to tension applied on the material, and recover back towards the equilibrium point in response to release of the tension on the material. Reinforcing the cuff area with the heat-sealable material allows the cuff area to maintain its stretch and recovery properties even after the fabric has degraded after extended use and washing of the fabric. Furthermore, the ultrasonic cutting causes some of the heat-sealable film to melt into the cut edges of the fabric at the cuff to create substantially sealed edges at the cuff.

  • Patent number: 6430747
Abstract: An auxiliary shirt cuff which can be applied to virtually any type of shirt. It does not require any modification to the shirt. When applied, the cuff gives the appearance of a high-quality french cuff shirt. It can be applied to a shirt already having a french cuff, or to one having a conventional button cuff. Different fabrics and colors can be employed to make the cuff, thereby creating a pleasing and fashionable contrast with the fabric and color of the shirt to which the cuff is applied.

  • Patent number: 6336223
Abstract: The lower open ends of the liner sleeves are detachably connected to the lower open end of the shell sleeves by two annular interengaging portions each of which is part of a hook and loop fastening means. Sleeve wells are provided within the lower ends of the liner sleeves by folding the inner moisture barrier of each liner sleeve upon itself and stitching the edge of the inner moisture barrier to a wrister. One annular portion is stitched to the lower end of the outer moisture barrier of each liner sleeve and faces outwardly of the associated liner sleeve. The other annular portion is stitched to an annular moisture barrier and faces inwardly of the associated shell sleeve. Each annular moisture barrier is disposed within the lower end of a liner sleeve with the top and bottom portions of the annular moisture barrier stitched to the associated shell sleeve.

  • Patent number: 6249916
Abstract: A garment having a cuff construction with an opening for permitting the thumb of the wearer and the fingers to extend outside the sleeve. The cuff is generally integrally attached to an article of clothing, and folds in on itself for storing the cuff permitting the use or non use of the cuff at the user's direction. The cuff is formed at an opening of a sleeve in a garment, and includes a tubular member which is switchable between a first rolled position allowing the hand to pass through and a second unrolled position forming a covering around at least a portion of the hand and/or thumb while leaving the ends of the fingers and thumb exposed.

  • Patent number: 6212685
Abstract: A shirt cuff comprises a band of material having first and second opposing edges and first and second opposing ends. The first edge is attached to the sleeve of the shirt. The dimensions of the band are such that it substantially closes about the circumference of the sleeve along the first edge. Unlike conventional cuffs, the two ends of the band diverge from the first edge toward the second edge such that the two ends are substantially separated proximate to the second edge. In one embodiment, the edges are substantially straight so that there is a “V”-shaped opening in the cuff. In other embodiments, the ends of the band may have alternative shapes, but in each case there is a substantial opening in the cuff proximate to the second edge of the band. A fastener for the cuff connects the two ends of the band, spanning the opening therebetween.

  • Patent number: 6167731
Abstract: A novel method of fabricating surgical gowns basically comprises the steps of fabricating main body robe portions for the gowns, each having a pair of arm sleeves terminating at respective wrist openings, knitting on a circular knitting machine a plurality of discreet individual annular cuff blanks for the gowns, and affixing, e.g., by sewing, one cuff blank to each sleeve of each robe portion in surrounding relation to the sleeve's wrist: openings. According to the invention, each cuff blank is knitted to have an annular main cuff body portion entirely of a single ply knitted construction, with an annular turned welt integrally knitted with one end of the cuff body. The material and fabrication costs associated with disposable surgical gowns and like medical garments may thereby be significantly reduced.
