  • Patent number: 5593454
Abstract: An elastomeric sleeve, for retaining and attaching a prosthesis to a stump of an amputee. Typically, the sleeve is made of polyurethane, soft elastomer reinforced with a nylon or polyurethane mesh. This reinforcement, among other things, eliminates the possibility of support failure caused by a small tear or cut. The polyurethane elastomer is selected to have a resilience, load bearing capability and energy and impact absorption similar or close to that of the enclosed limb adjacent to the sleeve to reduce pressure points. The elastomer is also selected to be able to stretch up to 700% to 1,600% an original dimension but return to within five percent or less of the original dimension. These stretch characteristics are modified by a special mesh pattern, which permits a greater amount of stretch around the limb circumferentially than along the limb.

Abstract: The shin pad, for use in ice hockey and possibly other sports, includes a lower brace element positionable along the front of the player's shin and securable to the player's lower leg, and an upper brace element positionable along the front of the player's lower thigh and securable thereto. A shin shield is secured outside the lower brace element. The lower and upper brace elements are pivotally connected to each other by pivotal connections on lateral and medial sides thereof, the pivotal connections being positionable on lateral and medial sides of the player's knee, in general alignment with the axis of the player's knee joint. To restrict or prevent hyperextension of the knee, the shin pad includes a stop arranged to prevent rotation of the upper and lower brace elements beyond a selected maximum permissible extension angle.

  • Patent number: 5507720
Abstract: The invention relates to a device for protecting a shin and ankle from blows and for supporting the ankle, allowing an athlete to participate in sports with an ankle injury. The device attachable to a shin, ankle and foot for protecting the shin and ankle from blows and for supporting the ankle against inversion and eversion, comprises a body comprising a shin protecting portion connected to an ankle supporting portion, the ankle supporting portion comprising two sides for positioning on the medial and lateral sides of the ankle respectively; means, such as straps, for securing the two sides of the ankle supporting portion of the body to the ankle; and a U-shaped support extending between the two sides of the ankle supporting portion of the body for passing under the foot. Preferably, the body comprises a hard outer shell and an inner pad. The shin protecting portion and the ankle supporting portion may be flexibly connected. The device avoids interference between conventional shin guards and ankle braces.
