  • Patent number: 9750295
Abstract: Welding helmets, systems, and kits providing real-time fume exposure monitoring and warning capability during an arc welding process. A welding helmet configured to protect the head of a user during a welding process is configured with an intelligent warning apparatus and an air-sampling pick-up and output port. The air-sampling pickup and output port connects to a proximal end of an air sampling tube for sampling breathable air within the welding helmet, and a distal end of the air-sampling tube connects to an air-sampling in-take port of an external aerosol monitoring device. The intelligent warning apparatus communicates with the aerosol monitoring device to receive air sample output data from the aerosol monitoring device, and to process the air sample output data to generate warning data and/or warning signals based on preset exposure level set points and/or exposure warning operating modes.

  • Patent number: 9038199
Abstract: A method and system for controlling ventilation in a welding helmet is provided. The invention may be adapted to a wide variety of system types, and may reduce or eliminate the need for a shroud or barrier around the head and neck of the welder, of the type used in PAPR systems. The airflow system includes forward and rearward air streams, directed onto the face of the welder, onto the top of the head of the welder, and toward the back of the head of the welder. The air streams help to cool the welder, provide a fresh source of air for breathing, and create a positive pressure system that reduces or excludes entrainment of contaminated external air into the forwardly directed air flow. Certain embodiments may include streams that are filtered, split or redirected via deflectors and conduits to achieve the aforementioned goals.

  • Patent number: 8336113
Abstract: An improved welding helmet encloses a welders head and a portion of the neck. The helmet contains a fan, filter and thermoelectric cooling module to provide clean, cool air that reduces welding fume levels below suggested maximums and provides cool air to the welders head and neck area making their body feel cooler. Air exhausted from the helmet is captured and further utilized to significantly improve system efficiency by causing it to be in contact with the hot side heat sink that is a part of the thermoelectric cooling module assembly. The use of an external power source, including readily available welding power, is suggested as one option for supplying system power. An optional configuration is presented where an external container strapped to the welders body is employed containing the fan, air filter and thermoelectric cooling module and is connected to the helmet by cool air intake and exhaust air hoses.

  • Patent number: 8104094
Abstract: This invention defines a welding helmet that encloses a welders head on five sides and with an optional skirt covers their neck. The helmet contains a fan, filter and cooling module to provide clean cool air that reduces welding fume levels in the breathing zone below suggested maximums. By providing cool air to the welders head and neck area their whole body will feel cooler. It suggests the use of an external power source to provide the energy required to have a fan of sufficient capacity to draw air thorough a quality filter so potentially hazardous constituents of welding fumes are captured. This externally supplied power allows the required cooling capacity thermal electric cooling modules to be used to significantly lower the ambient air temperature. This helmet allows the welding operator to have sufficient cooling to improve their overall work environment for one of the most objectionable welding issues, excess heat.
