Abstract: Switching devices having a contact point, and an arc extinguishing chamber are used to blow switch arcs. The arc extinguishing chamber may have an exit opening through which plasma, generated inside the switching device by a switch arc developing when the contact point opens, exits out of the switching device. Inside the extinguish chamber a first arc guide plate may be provided that extends from the contact point toward the exit opening and which guides and stretches the switch arc. The switch arc may be initially stretched beyond the dimensions of the exit opening by the first arc guide plate and then the stretching may be reduced to be within the dimensions of the exit opening by an arc guide pin projecting from the first arc guide plate.

Abstract: Methods for directing an optical beam and for making an apparatus for directing an optical beam are described. One such method may include applying a first force to a plate to move the plate from a first angular orientation to a second angular orientation wherein the plate contacts a stop in the second angular orientation. A reflective portion of the plate is stopped from rotating beyond the second angular orientation. A second force can be applied between the plate and the stop to hold the plate against the stop in a plane substantially parallel to a substantially planar surface of the stop. An apparatus for directing an optical beam may be made by coupling an array of plates to a base assembly wherein each plate is movable between a first angular orientation and a second angular orientation.

  • Patent number: 4849590
Abstract: A switch has contacts constructed so that an electro-dynamic force is created by the current flowing through the switch which tends to maintain the switch in a closed state. This force counteracts other electro-dynamic forces which tend to open the switch. The contact design is particularly adapted from use in a single pole-double throw switch having a contact arm that is movable between two fixed contacts. The electro-dynamic force compensation exists between the contact arm and whichever one of the fixed contacts the contact arm is against. The fixed contacts also include arc runners so that any arc that develops as the contacts separate eliminates electro-dynamic force which tends to maintain the switch in a closed state.

  • Patent number: 4690780
Abstract: An improved insulating material is provided. The insulating material is a mixture of an insulating fluid and solid insulative bodies. The insulating material exhibits desirable insulating, conformal coating, surface adhesion, and low-viscosity characteristics. For example, when the insulating material is used to fill the cavity of a hollow insulator, the insulating material prevents any moisture that enters the insulator from adhering to the walls that define the cavity; thus maintaining the insulating qualities of the insulator. In the event that some of the fluid is lost through leakage, the insulating material also aids in preserving the insulating qualities of the insulator.
