Operating Means Patents (Class 200/17R)
  • Patent number: 4829147
Abstract: A circuit breaker having positive contact indication. Upon the circuit breaker tripping, the operating mechanism components unlatch, moving the cradle, upper link and lower link upwards and opening the contacts. Upon the circuit breaker being manually opened, no operating mechanism components move except the upper link and lower link which causes the contacts to open. Upon the occurrence of locked contacts and the operating mechanism receiving a trip signal, the operating mechanism components unlatch but move only slightly since the contacts cannot open. A shuttle, pivotally mounted on the cradle, moves upward slightly to catch its tail on a flipper spring. The shuttle rotates slightly to meet a tab positioned on the handle arm and to block and opening movement of the operating handle.

  • Patent number: 4804809
Abstract: A motor operator for local or remote shifting of switchgear contacts toward either open or closed positions includes a reversible motor and rotatable drive screw mounted on common support structure for simultaneous pivoting movement as a drive nut translates fore-and-aft along the length of the screw. The drive nut includes an outer body and an inner sleeve which is set into free-wheeling motion whenever the sleeve comes into contact with either of two stops mounted on the screw defining respective end limits of travel for the nut. A drive element normally coupling the nut to an operating shaft of the switchgear is removable to allow the shaft to be manually rotated with a wrench when desired, and removal of the drive element reduces the likelihood that the worker is injured upon unintentional activation of the motor while the operating shaft is turned by hand.

  • Patent number: 4565906
Abstract: A switch operated by a reciprocating pin mounted to the base of an electromagnetic reciprocator, which is a motor with a coil that retrieves electricity stored in the electromagnetic field of a permanent magnet. The switch consists of a reciprocating plastic block with two adjacent parallel grooves which engage the reciprocating pin. On the bottom of the flat plate is a unique electrical switch capable of indicating the direction in which the flat plate is rocked over the spherical surface. Attached to the bottom of the flat plate adjacent the spherical surface is a spring consisting of a substantially flat center portion and four spiralling arms extending from the periphery of said center portion to attach to the structure on which the spherical surface is mounted. When the flat plate is rocked over said spherical surface, the spring generates a restoring force which, upon removal of the rocking force, restores the flat plate to its nominal position. The spring makes possible rocking motion of the flat plate over the spherical surface without pinning the flat plate to a point on the spherical surface.

  • Patent number: 4425487
Abstract: A unitized manual actuator assembly is attached to a printed circuit board for operating poppet switches mounted thereon. The actuator assembly comprises a two-piece housing having a pair of integral tube guides disposed in the housing. A pin is slideably disposed in each tube guide with one end protruding out of the housing for operating the switches. The internal end of each pin has an integral hollow cap covering and protecting the upper open end of its associated tube guide. A coil spring surrounds each tube guide and engages the integral hollow cap of the pin to bias it against a rocker member pivotally mounted in the housing. The rocker member has an operator portion extending through an opening in the housing and a pair of oppositely extending arms engaged by the hollow caps so that the pins translate in opposite directions when the rocker member is pivoted.

  • Patent number: 4405842
Abstract: A stepping or indexing mechanism for an encoding rotary or multi-position switch is arranged within a switch housing. The stepping mechanism comprises a symbol or numeric wheel, two substantially mirror-image and mutually symmetrically arranged locking or latching levers, a locking or latching wheel, a gear meshing with the symbol or numeric wheel as well as a switching or indexing element arranged laterally at the switch housing. The locking or latching levers are movably mounted at one end in a bearing or support element and at the other end are structured for the rotatable mounting of a related roller. The latching levers are drawn together with the rollers by a tension spring or equivalent structure into latching or locking recesses of the locking wheel. For the switching operation the locking levers are deflected against the restoring force of the spring out of the locking recesses, and the rollers then slide along locking or latching cams or dogs provided with arcuate-shaped flank profiles.

An operating arm having ends thereof arranged to be brought into register with each operating tab at mutually exclusive angular positions is normally tilt mounted in a first direction upon a rotor that may be positioned in selected ones of a plurality of angular positions by a step motor. Upon one end of the arm being brought into register with a switch operating tab, the arm is tilted in the opposite direction to effect the operation of the operating tab with which the one end thereof is in register to place the corresponding individual electrical load switch in a selected circuit condition.

  • Patent number: 4349708
Abstract: A joystick controller in which a conventional handle is moveable radially with respect to its axis relative to an axial pivot location from the nominal rest position of the handle is disclosed. A plurality of pressure-actuated switches are disposed in a common plane normal to the axis of the handle in its rest position. The switches circumscribe the approximate pivot location of the handle. A deformable resilient annular member is superimposed over the switches. The annular member is fixed to the handle so that displacement of the handle from its rest position causes an arcuate portion of the annular member to press against at least one of the switches. The annular member thus actuates selected switches depending on the direction in which the handle is displaced by the operator.
