Contact Moved By Sudden Release Of Stored Energy, (e.g., Spring Charger) Patents (Class 200/400)
  • Publication number: 20080296137
Abstract: A stored energy assembly is provided for an electrical switching apparatus, such as a circuit breaker. The stored energy assembly includes a mount removably coupled to the circuit breaker housing. A stored energy mechanism, such as a spring, is coupled to the mount and is movable among charged and discharged positions. An actuating element is cooperable with the gears of a gear assembly in order to move among first and second positions corresponding to the spring being disposed in the charged and discharged positions, respectively. A manual charging mechanism and an automatic charging mechanism are coupled to the gear assembly, and move the gears, in order to move the actuating element and charge the spring. The spring, the actuating element, the gear assembly, and the charging mechanisms are coupled to the mount, thereby forming a sub-assembly. The sub-assembly is removably coupled to the circuit breaker housing.

Abstract: An operating mechanism closing assembly for an electrical switching apparatus having a ram assembly structured to engage and move a toggle assembly is provided. The ram assembly includes a ram body that travels over a, preferably, straight path and engages the toggle assembly. The path may be defined by one or more pins extending through the ram body. One or more springs are coupled to the ram body and bias the ram body toward the toggle assembly. The springs may be conveniently disposed about the pins. In this configuration, the force created by the springs is, essentially, applied directly to the toggle assembly. The toggle assembly is coupled to, and structured to rotate, a pole shaft that is further coupled to, and structured to actuate, the electrical switching apparatus contacts. Abstract: Within a closing assembly that utilizes a ram assembly having a spring driven ram body, an energy dissipating spring seat assembly is provided. The ram body is mounted on a guide assembly having at least one pin. The guide assembly also includes a base plate and a stop plate. A ram assembly spring is disposed between the ram body and the base plate and is structured to bias the ram body toward the stop plate. The spring seat assembly includes a spring seat bracket and a spring seat. The spring seat is, preferably, a generally flat, plate-like leaf spring that is disposed between the ram assembly springs and the base plate of the ram body. The spring seat is sufficiently rigid so as to not deflect fully under the force created by the compressed ram assembly springs, but not so rigid as to resist deflecting under the force created when the ram body impacts the stop plate.

Abstract: A circuit protector is connected in a circuit to protect the circuit from overloading. The circuit protector includes a casing inside which first and second terminals electrically connected to the circuit are fixed. A first cantilever member is fixed to the first terminal and has a cantilever arm that assumes a first shape in a normal condition and is convertible into a second shape in an overloading condition. A second member is supported in the casing by a pivot and has one end fixed to the second terminal by a fastener and an opposite end forming a contact engageable with the cantilever arm in the first shape and separable from the cantilever arm in the second shape. The fastener has a low melting point whereby an overloading causes the fastener to melt and break and thus allowing the second member to rotate and separating the contact from the cantilever arm. The second member is biased by a spring to facilitate separation of the contact from the second member when the fastener is broken.

Abstract: The present invention provides a motor control cam having a relief channel adjacent to the switch lever notch. The relief channel extends generally circumferentially from said switch lever notch under the second, wide diameter portion of the cam surface. In this configuration, when the switch lever is in the switch lever notch and a counter rotation of the cam occurs, the switch lever enters the relief channel and does not impact against the cam. As such, the switch lever is not damaged or moved out of adjustment by a counter rotation of the cam.

Abstract: An electrical switching device, in particular a circuit breaker, is disclosed. In order to shorten the opening times of a switching device such as this, a snap-action system is used. The system interacts with the moving contact piece, of an electrical switching device having a switching shaft and having a moving contact piece which can be operated by the switching shaft, such that the moving contact piece is automatically moved to a switched-off position after opening of the contact by electrodynamic forces in the event of a short circuit or the like. The contact load on the moving contact piece decreases as the opening increases. This may result in better short-circuit current limiting. The overall production costs may be considerably reduced.

  • Patent number: 7115829
Abstract: A switch includes a contact mechanism having at least one contact and defining a longitudinal axis. Actuation of a handle moves the contact mechanism transversely to the longitudinal axis between an open position and a closed position in relation to at least one fixed contact, whereby a contact spring loads the contact mechanism to seek the closed position. A support part is operatively connected to the handle and forms an abutment for support of the contact spring. The support part is moveable relative to the contact mechanism. Operated by the handle is a locking mechanism which is constructed to hold the contact mechanism in an intermediate position between the open and closed positions to maintain the contact of the contact mechanism at an electrically insulated distance from the fixed contact. A release mechanism interacts with the locking device for releasing the contact mechanism to move to the closed position.

Abstract: An electric power interrupter with an internal contactor that is suitable for use as a line and load switch constructed from light weight materials including a fiberglass or composite insulator and aluminum flanges. The light weight design feature allows the power interrupter to be supported above a standard disconnect switch insulator without having to replace or reinforce the insulator. The power interrupter also includes a latch mechanism with a low-force trip action, such as a spring-driven toggle mechanism that accelerates the internal contactor to break the electric power circuit on the opening stroke. This low-force trip action allows the power interrupter to be actuated by a standard disconnect switch operating mechanism without having to upgrade or augment the standard operating mechanism. For these reasons, the power interrupter may be installed as a retrofit upgrade to an existing standard disconnect switch without having to modify the underlying disconnect switch.

The bumper is retained in the receptacle by a number of spaced ribs that engage certain portions of the bumper yet permit deformations of other portions of the bumper into an expansion region. By employing a bumper made of a material having a low coefficient of restitution, deformation of the bumper tends to dissipate the energy of a removable arm impacting the bumper. The bumper can be installed, removed, and replaced substantially without requiring the use of an adhesive. The movable arm engages the bumper on a corner of the bumper to provide the bumper with an effectively progressive spring rate.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a switching mechanism for preventing a trip error of a manual motor starter. While using the manual motor starter, even though a latch holder (4) is incompletely released from restraint by a trip lever (3) during trip operation of the switching mechanism (1), the trip lever (3) is pushed upward to allow a restrained state of the latch holder (4) to be completely released at any event. Therefore, when implementing reset operation of the switching mechanism (1), as a latch (2) is smoothly introduced between both pins (4a and 4b) of the latch holder (4) rotated by a predetermined angle, it is possible to prevent breakage of the switching mechanism (1).
