Abstract: A flashlight has a body containing control circuitry, with a lamp connected to the body and to the control circuitry. A photodetector is connected to the body and the control circuitry, and faces the lamp to sense an operating condition of the lamp. The control circuitry operates the lamp in a start up mode until signaled by the photodetector that the lamp is properly operating. After this, the lamp is operated in a normal mode. The flashlight may have a switch with a button that moves through a range of positions. The switch may have several contact elements, and the button may have an actuator registered with each of the contact elements. The actuators may be of different heights, to provide a sequence of switch operation. Some of the actuators may be movable to allow the button to be actuated further after an initial contact is made.

  • Patent number: 6812424
Abstract: In an elastic sheet member of the present invention, a silicon rubber sheet is supported by a fixed member. A wire group functioning as contacts is disposed at either one of the silicon rubber sheet or the fixed member. In other words, electrical continuity paths, which were conventionally provided at a printed circuit board, are basically provided at the elastic sheet member which is formed of a non-conductive material. In accordance with the present invention, there is no need for the printed circuit board to cover a range at which all rubber contacts are disposed, as in conventional art. Accordingly, the printed circuit board can be made compact, space required for placement thereof can be reduced, and degrees of freedom in design are increased.

  • Patent number: 6466118
Abstract: A magnetically coupled pushbutton switch has a coupler magnet layer that normally holds an electrically conductive magnetic armature spaced from a substrate layer. An overlay having an overlay electrical conductor formed thereon covers the pushbutton switch. The overlay electrical conductor, which electrically contacts a crown on the armature, is part of a set of electrical conductors that is normally closed. When a user provided actuation force causes the armature to break away from the coupler magnet layer, the set of electrical conductors is opened.

  • Patent number: 5629679
Abstract: A portable personal security device of compact size capable of being carried in a pocket or purse or the like, has a pistol-like configuration with a handgrip portion and a barrel portion. The device includes a noxious chemical which may be discharged to fend off an attack by an assailant, and an audible alarm which may be sounded to attract attention and/or to discourage an attacker. Further, a light is provided on the device so that it can be used as a flashlight. A plurality of finger-receiving openings are formed in the handgrip portion to effect a secure grip on the device and make it difficult to dislodge from the hand of the user. These openings also assist in quickly and properly orienting the device. An actuator for energizing the light, the chemical discharge and the audible alarm includes structure which enables sequential activation of these devices.

  • Patent number: 5564560
Abstract: A dual function button for keyboards and keypads. The button includes a first contact switch which is activated by a first manual pressure. The first contact switch is preferably formed by a resilient cover having a conductive pellet on its interior face, and a flexible substrate having spaced contacts below the pellet. The first manual pressure causes the pellet to impinge upon the spaced contacts, completing a first circuit. The button also includes a second contact switch which is activated by a second, greater, manual pressure. The second contact switch includes the resilient cover of the first switch, a rigid substrate mounting spaced contacts, and a flexible conductive dome mounted on the rigid substrate below the resilient cover. The second manual pressure will cause the dome to resiliently deform and impinge upon the contacts, closing a second circuit. In this manner two functions may be provided by a single switch. The two functions may advantageously be a dual-speed cursor control.

  • Patent number: 5122627
Abstract: An actutator for a multiple-position electrical switch includes an actuator member having a cam surface formed on its undersurface along each edge. Two pairs of cam followers formed at the end of respective resilient beams slide along the cam surface. The cam surface is formed with a series of ridges and indentations corresponding to the actuator switch positions. Thus, the actuator member can be moved between adjacent switch positions only by exerting sufficient force to lift each of the cam followers over a ridge from one indentation to the adjacent indentation. An additional cam follower is resiliently biased against an additional cam surface formed on the underside of the actuator member when the actuator member is moved to one switch position. As a result, the forces required to move the actuator member to one switch position is greater than the force required to move the actuator member between other switch positions.

  • Patent number: 5120922
Abstract: A momentary pushbutton multiposition slide switch is provided which can be readily manufactured in miniature size from substantially fewer components than switches of conventional construction while providing the same electrical functionality. The switch includes a slider assembly that provides three switch positions: a normally open position, a position providing switch closure between first fixed contacts and a switch position providing switch closure between second fixed contacts. The slider assembly includes a slider contact that is carried by an assembly body, the slide contact selectively bridges fixed contacts to be interconnected at each slide position. The slider assembly also includes a pushbutton that incorporates a detent portion. In one embodiment, the detent portion is cooperative with a complenentary detent portion of a resilient contact element.

  • Patent number: 5012056
Abstract: A control device for an electrical switch is suggested, which is composed, among other things, of an actuation element (1) as well as at least one latching pin (3) that is under the effect of a compression spring (2) and a system having at least one latching track (4) interacting with the latching pin (3). In the latching track (4), at least one molded pathway (7) lying inclined to the actuation directions is present, which upon a displacement of the latching pin (3) in one of the actuation directions necessarily produces a simultaneous displacement of the latching pin (3) in the other actuation direction. The control device designed in such a way serves the purpose of realizing the functions of both angular and axial displacement and in addition, of insuring that the electrical switch can only be brought into permissible switching positions by movement of the actuation element (1).
