Vapor is withdrawn from that falling-film evaporator which is the first to be supplied with the solution and at least part of said vapor is directly contacted with the solution as it flows down through the heating zone of at least one other evaporator of the final stage. From that falling-film evaporator of the final stage which is the first to be supplied with the solution the vapor may be fed to all other evaporators of the final stage.

    Abstract: A water distiller is provided which is used in conjunction with a hot water heater where normally wasted energy is used to preheat the hot water heater inlet. The distiller includes a heat storage tank, an evaporator tank having a water inlet, a heater and a steam outlet, and a first and second heat exchanger located within the heat storage tank. Steam generated in the evaporator tank passes through the first heat exchanger and condenses, forming distilled water. The heat rejected during condensation is absorbed within the heat storage tank. The second heat exchanger is used to preheat the water flowing to the hot water heater inlet by passing the water through the second heat exchanger on an as needed basis where it absorbs heat from the heat storage tank.

    Abstract: A highly efficient distillation unit is provided for heating water and condensing the generated steam to remove the contaminants from the water. Efficiency is enhanced by providing a compact air cooled fin-and-tube heat exchanger which removes heat from the steam, with a powered blower passing air by the fins. Mechanical linkage interconnects the rod and a valve which controls incoming water flow to the bowl. A low density electrical heating element is powered with from 40 to 55 watts per square inch of submerged heating element exterior surface. An oxidant solution comprising ultrapure sulfuric acid, peroxydisulfuric acid, and ultrapure water is continuously withdrawn from a process after use. The separated oxidant is continuously distilled and condensed to form a purified stream of sulfuric acid. The major portion of this stream is continuously returned to the process. The remaining minor portion is continuously cooled, subjected to analysis for purity, and diluted with ultrapure water. The diluted sulfuric acid is further cooled prior to electrochemical treatment in the anode compartment of an electrochemical cell.

    Abstract: A vacuum distillation system uses a tower having an open bottom submerged within a tank of solution exposed to atmospheric pressure. The solution within the tower is elevated to barometric level by a high vacuum or low absolute pressure on the tower top. As solution flows through the open bottom and upward, the solution is heated and then cooled to cause degasification and precipitation, and then withdrawn from the tower top. The treated solution is flowed to a vaporization chamber that is subjected to a low absolute pressure. A heater maintains the solution at a selected chamber temperature above the boiling point of water at the selected chamber pressure. The chamber pressure and temperature may be selected as desired to yield the purest water distillate for almost any solution of water and impurities. Water vapor is pumped from the vaporization chamber by a vapor pump to a condenser, where condensation results from increased pressure and decreased temperature.

    Abstract: A de-salinator 10 for brackish- or salt-water has a heat insulating shell 11 closed by end plates 12. A heat exchanger 22 in the bottom of the chamber 13 is heated by engine coolant from a marine engine 27, while a pair of condensor coils 19, connected to manifolds 33, 34, use sea water to cool the fresh water vapour which is drawn off by outlets 21. The engine driven pump 37 which draws the water through the condensor coils 19 operates an eductor 36 which generates a partial vacuum in the chamber 13, drawing off brine from the bottom of the chamber and any excess water in the chamber. The level of water in the chamber 13 is maintained by drawing off a portion of the heated water passing through the condensor tubes 19. The condensate is drawn from the outlets 21 via an eductor 46 which is driven by a suction pump 45 connected to the fresh water tank 47.

    Abstract: A solvent recovery apparatus including a housing having an open top tank therewithin for receiving a flexible bag. A bag holder member is removably mounted within the bag, and the holder member shapes the bag to hold it in an open condition for receiving dirty solvent directed into the tank. The holder member urges the upper edge of the bag against the inner surface of the tank so that substantially no solvent can migrate into the space between the bag and the tank. The tank has a space for receiving heating oil below a bottom thereof so that heat can be imparted to the contents of the bag to evaporate the solvent therewithin. Baffle structure in the oil causes the oil to circulate as the oil is heated by a resistance heater in the space. A quench coil below the bottom of the tank and above the oil receives a coolant for heating the liquid and solid contaminants left in the bag after evaporation of the solvent to minimize the delay in waiting for the contaminants to cool before removing the bag from the tank.

A salt water intake extends upwardly from a source of salt water and into the evaporating chamber to form a pool therein. The condensed fresh water forms a pool in the condensing chamber which communicates via a vertical discharge column to a U type outlet at the base. An automatic blow down conduit extends from the base of the pool of the salt water in the evaporating chamber to discharge the heavily concentrated salt fraction of the salt water from time to time.
