    Abstract: The solutions are concentrated by multiple-effect evaporation in indirectly heated evaporators. The highest concentration of the solution is reached in a final evaporator stage, which is heated with live steam. The final evaporators stage includes two to four falling-film evaporators, all of which are heated with live steam. The falling-film evaporators are consecutively flown through by the solution. Vapor is withdrawn from that falling-film evaporator which is the first to be supplied with the solution and at least part of said vapor is directly contacted with the solution as it flows down through the heating zone of at least one other evaporator of the final stage. From that falling-film evaporator of the final stage which is the first to be supplied with the solution the vapor may be fed to all other evaporators of the final stage.

    Abstract: A thermal system includes a plurality of heat exchangers in series and the same number of flash tanks in series is interposed between two subsequent effects of a multiple effect evaporating system for sulfate black liquor. The liquor is indirectly heated in the heat exchangers by vapor produced by step-by-step expansion of the same liquor in the flash tanks and additionally by steam from an external source. To decrease the viscosity of the black liquor it is heated to a temperature of 190.degree.-200.degree. C. and retained in a reactor vessel for 10-20 minutes.Preferably the flash tanks and the heat exchange elements are positioned on top of each other within a shell to form an integral construction in which the vapor compartment of each flash tank is directly connected to the vapor compartment of a corresponding one of the heat exchange elements.

    Abstract: A distilling apparatus includes an evaporation section which heats raw water and causes the generation of vapor from said raw water, and a hydrophobic porous film through which the thus generated vapor is filtered. Because vapor separated from the raw water is supplied to one surface of the hydrophobic porous film, the proportion of the vapor relative to the fluid supplied to that surface of the film can be increased, thereby enabling the efficient filtering of a large amount of vapor through the film. In addition, because the temperature of condensed water obtained by cooling the vapor can be kept in the vicinity of the boiling point thereof, any gases and volatile substances contained in the raw water are prevented from dissolving in the distilled water, thereby enabling the production of extremely pure distilled water.

    Abstract: A vertically extending distillation cylinder has a closed top and an open bottom having an electric heating element disposed therein to form a closure. Adjacent to the top of the distillation cylinder is connected a condensing tube. The condensing tube extends down through a condenser having a cooling water inlet at the bottom and a water discharge at the top. A throttle valve regulates the flow of cooling water. From the water discharge, a trough carries the water to impinge on the distillation cylinder causing pollutants to vaporize. The water collects below in a basin surrounding the distillation cylinder. A feed tube carries water from the basin to the bottom of the distillation cylinder. A discharge tube also connected to the bottom of the distillation cylinder carries water up to where it makes a U-turn. This regulates water height in the distillation cylinder. The discharge tube and an over flow tube from the basin discharge into a funnel from which water is conveyed to a sewer.

The brine solution which has been concentrated by the first concentrating device exit the tank through an output opening and is introduced into the venturi via a plurality of nozzles where it is mixed with the exhaust gases.A venting stack is also attached to the upper end of the tank for venting the exhaust gases emitted from the venturi and pre-heating dilute brine solution, which is introduced into the tank through the venting stack. As the solution travels down the stack and into the tank, it comes into contact with the exhaust gases exiting the tank from the venturi.

    Abstract: In order to dissolve oil or PCB which exists in the electrical insulation of parts to be cleaned, a solvent is evaporated during a heating phase by an evaporator located with the parts in an autoclave. The solvent vapor condenses on the parts and penetrates into the electrical insulation to form an oil or PCB-solvent mixture. In the heating phase, a plurality of intermediate pressure reductions are carried out in the autoclave, and during each intermediate pressure reduction the solvent is simultaneously distilled out of the oil or PCB-solvent mixture, directly from the autoclave. That is, during each of the pressure reductions, the solvent supply is discontinued and the mixture circulated through a circulating line. Following the completion of each intermediate pressure reduction, the pure oil or PCB present in a condensate vessel is pumped out by an intermediately located feed pump through a connecting line and into a reservoir.

The fin elements may be in a cruciform arrangement within the interior chamber of the pipe. A method of removing the volatile components includes forming a thin film of polymer and heating and distributing the heat evenly on the thin film of polymer so that the volatile components may be vaporized.

    Abstract: In a heat exchanger of falling film type comprising heat exchange plates with area enlarging corrugation forming ridges and valleys extending in the falling film direction, repeated redistribution of the falling film is brought about by having the ridges and the valleys extending continuously within each of a number of zones formed one after the other in the falling direction, whereas the ridges and the valleys with regard to two consecutive zones are laterally displaced in relation to each other such that the ridges and the valleys, respectively, in one zone extend in alignment with the valleys and the ridges, respectively, in a consecutive zone.

The feed spreads out in the form of a film from the inner edge or edges for the elements and is taken up in the respective collection trough as a preconcentrate.

    Abstract: A free flow evaporator of the falling film type has the heating elements disposed in a circular configuration so that each extends radially a distance less than the interior radius of the evaporator cylindrical vessel. Heating vapor is introduced concentrically into the top of the vessel and passes into the tops of the heating elements, and condensate is withdrawn from the bottoms of the heating elements in the vessel. Excess vapor passes through a vapor vent in the bottom of the vessel. The boiling liquid, such as black liquor from paper pulp processing, is introduced through a header above an annular channel with a perforated plate bottom, the perforated plate being disposed on top of the heating elements. The evaporated liquid vapor passes radially outwardly in the vessel, and then upwardly, and is discharged from the top of the vessel and passes to the top of another vessel (providing another effect), to provide heating vapor to the other vessel.

    Abstract: An evaporation or distillation apparatus uses one or more tubes driven to wobble about a vertical wobble axis that is aligned with the tube. A fluid distributor supplies a fluid to the inner surface of the wobbling tube at its upper end. A flexible whip rod located at least in part within the tube slides around over the inner surface as the tube wobbles. The pressure generated between the wobbling whip rod and the tube spreads the incoming fluid stream into a very thin film having a uniform thickness over the entire length of the tube. In the preferred form the whip rod is anchored at its lower end to a stationary base and is restrained against rotation about its own longitudinal axis, but is sufficiently flexible at its lower end to act as a universal joint. In this preferred form the whip rod has a flexible core surrounded by at least one length of tubular sheathing.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for distilling, especially vacuum refining and deodorizing edible oils and fats utilizing sheets of oil driven downwardly in a distiller with a vacuum source at its top. A nozzle includes pressure equalization chambers, cantilever adjustment screws, and a central drag sheet to produce longer lasting and more uniform thin oil sheets to be driven in the distiller. A continuous process deaerates, dehydrates, degums, bleaches, refines, removes tocopherol, deodorizes, and strips peroxides and hydroperoxides from raw oil in a series of isothermal stages utilizing driven sheet distillers. No stripping steam is used except in the stage which strips peroxides and hydroperoxides. The method produces valuable, pure products such as tocopherol and fractionated fatty acids. It is especially efficient in heat exchange and low in waste and pollution producing products.
