Tubular Patents (Class 202/237)
  • Patent number: 4750975
Abstract: Vapor and liquid contact structure for distillation, fractionation, rectification, absorption, and the refining, in a column, of various liquid materials such as petroleum, chemical, and alcohol solutions. Provision is made for the inclusion of vertically-spaced bubble plate chambers, having respective liquid/vapor contact devices, to accommodate contact of counter-current flows of reflux liquid and vapors. Downcomer means including slanted ramps, disposed outside of the vapor conduit-defining interior, define elongate downcomer structure for liquid flow and thereby, i.e., by such slanted construction, reduce froth or foam passing to a next lower contact device, eliminating unwanted counter-current gas entrainment between contact devices. Liquid flow rates over exit weirs beyond 30 gpm/inch are obtained. Downcomer reflux reservoir depth can be adjusted by an adjustable gate proximate the slot opening to a given contact device.

  • Patent number: 4710272
Abstract: An apparatus for distilling a source liquid which utilizes a substantially vertical liquid column. The liquid column is contained by a tubular container closed at the top and open at the bottom. The open bottom of the tubular container is submerged within a source liquid reservoir. The height of the tubular container is greater than the maximum obtainable height for the given density of the portion of source liquid contained within the column. A vacuum is located within the tubular container above the surface of the portion of source liquid contained in the column. In the area of the vacuum, there is located a centrifugal compressor which is to function to move vapor from the vacuum section of the tubular container and compress such along with the transfer of heat to the point that the vapor becomes liquid. This now product liquid is to be removed from the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4680090
Abstract: This invention relates to a distillation device that employs a plurality of twin tubings of coaxial arrangement or of side-by-side arrangement wherein the vaporization takes place at an evacuated state in one tubing and the condensation takes place in the other tubing of the twin tubings. A blower or pump moves the vapor from the vaporization tubing to the condensation tubing and, consequently, creates an evacuated state in the vaporization tubing and a pressurized state in the condensation tubing. As the condensation takes place at a higher pressure in the condensation tubing compared with the vaporization in the vaporization tubing, the temperature of the condensation tubing is higher than the temperature of the vaporization tubing, and consequently, a very high percentage of the latent heat released by the condensing vapor is recycled from the condensation tubing to the vaporization tubing by conduction through the metallic wall dividing the condensation tubing from the vaporization tubing.

  • Patent number: 4618399
Abstract: An evaporation or distillation apparatus uses one or more tubes driven to wobble about a vertical wobble axis that is aligned with the tube. A fluid distributor supplies a fluid to the inner surface of the wobbling tube at its upper end. A flexible whip rod located at least in part within the tube slides around over the inner surface as the tube wobbles. The pressure generated between the wobbling whip rod and the tube spreads the incoming fluid stream into a very thin film having a uniform thickness over the entire length of the tube. In the preferred form the whip rod is anchored at its lower end to a stationary base and is restrained against rotation about its own longitudinal axis, but is sufficiently flexible at its lower end to act as a universal joint. In this preferred form the whip rod has a flexible core surrounded by at least one length of tubular sheathing.

  • Patent number: 4615770
Abstract: Dual interrelated distillation columns are disclosed wherein the heat from a first column is transferred by thermal conduction through a common wall or surface to a second column to increase efficiency and decrease waste of energy. In one embodiment, the first heat generating column is a cylindrical column, and the second column is an annular column concentric to the first column. This concentric arrangement permits the heat generated in the first column to flow outwardly into the second column, thereby improving its efficiency and reducing the heat loss. Typically, the inner first column is a high pressure rectifying column, and the outer concentric column is a stripping column. In an alternate embodiment, the inner column can simply be a portion of a high pressure distillation process, and the outer column is a portion of a lower pressure distillation column.
