Patent number: 5582289Abstract: A composite carrier (10) has a handle structure (20) with a hand-gripping portion (22, 23) in upright relation to an attached article-engaging panel structure (24, 25). In one embodiment of the handle structure (20) the panel structure is a pair of panels (22, 23) formed from flexible sheet material. Each sheet (22, 24) has at least one deformable aperture (31) for engaging the neck of an article (31). In an alternate embodiment of the handle structure (40) the panel structure is a panel (44) attached in generally perpendicular relation to the hand-gripping portion. The generally horizontal panel has at least one neck-receiving aperture (46). Each neck-receiving aperture (46) has at least one foldably attached tab (48) extending inwardly into the aperture for engaging the flanged neck of an article such as the crown of a bottle. The second part of the composite carrier (10) is a tubular, wrap-around type carton (30) having top, side and bottom walls.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1995Date of Patent: December 10, 1996Assignee: The Mead CorporationInventor: James W. Patent number: 4398632Abstract: An improved carrier for bottles is formed from a paperboard tube having top, bottom and end walls. Parallel fold lines in the top wall of the tube provide a thin flattened ridge at the top of the handle portion of the assembled carrier. Flaps within hand opening cut-outs are folded in and upwardly between the major center panels forming the center partition of the carrier, the lateral cut edges of the flaps bearing against the ridge of the carrier, thereby adding strength in the handle portion. A fold line in one flap presents a flattened surface in the upper portion of the hand opening upon assembly of the carrier, affording greater comfort in carrying the carrier, and cooperates with the aforementioned flattened ridge to form a beam structure which greatly increases the strength of the handle portion of the carrier.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1981Date of Patent: August 16, 1983Assignee: Pack Image, Inc.Inventor: Orison W. Patent number: 4289266Abstract: A carrier for one or more stackable articles formed from a paperboard blank of generally rectangular configuration. The blank is folded about a score line intermediate its short ends so that adjacent regions are divergent at an angle. A pair of aligned slots in each adjacent region serve as a hand-hold. The blank further has confronting side panels extending downwardly from the adjacent, divergent regions, and panel portions cut from the side panels are folded toward one another along score lines adjacent free ends of the blank in formation of openings in the side panels, and are fastened to one another in provision of a bottom for the carrier. An article may be carried singly, or several stacked upon one another while supported on the bottom and projecting through, and retained within blank portions that define, the side-panel openings.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1979Date of Patent: September 15, 1981Assignee: American Can CompanyInventor: Raymond V.
