Abstract: The carrier has an automatic self-locking bottom construction which is actuated simply by placing a beverage or other container onto a bottom panel which traverses the whole width of the bottom and causes one or more tabs to snap into slots to perform the locking function. The tray unit has a planar base, first and second opposite sidewalls, and first and second opposite end walls. The sidewalls and end walls extend outwardly from a periphery of the base and connect thereto to define a rectangular structure for holding a plurality of bottles arranged in a series of rows. The bridge has a central planar portion and a plurality of arcuate recesses extending into a periphery of the central planar portion. Each recess is sized to receive a neck portion of one of the bottles. A method of packaging bottles having neck portions is also disclosed.

Further assistance is provided in holding the secondary male locks in the vertical lock position between two containers by the containers having flexible side walls and carrying a liquid whose weight pushes out against the walls of the container and creates tension in the wrap-around carrier thereby holding the secondary male locks in the vertical locked position.

The carrier has several advantages: it provides a reduction in paper board costs, improves manufacturing costs, retains the “basket” features demanded by the marketing needs of the beverage industry, and improves packaging line production at the beverage manufacturing location. The carrier is made by folding operations and separation along score lines. The carrier has internal longitudinal and transverse product separation, handle reinforcement, and bottom closure flaps. The carrier blank is formed as a die cut component, which is then assembled by folding and adhesive applied to designated locations. The finished carrier is then collapsed for transit, and the bottom flap can be secured at the manufacturing location. In a second embodiment, the bottom is already secured, and folds away from the partition portions when collapsed for transit.

All of the outside panels of these carriers are folded about lines that are parallel to the longitudinal direction of the gluer on which the carrier is folded and glued. All of these carriers have multi-ply handles in which none of the plies are foldably attached to each other at their top edges. Nicks may be provided between the handle panels and the side and end flaps to hold the carrier in proper position during the folding and gluing operation. This invention also relates to a method of folding and gluing the carriers on a straight-line gluer.

The article retaining member is positionable toward and into the inner region of the container so as to form an acute angle with the sidewall from which it emanates. The article retaining member further includes an article retention edge to engage, stabilize, and prevent undesired movement of the contoured article(s) housed within the interior region of the container apparatus. In particular, the article retaining member prevents migration of the contoured articles in a vertical plane, in a horizontal plane, and in a rotational direction.
