Patent number: 5730289Abstract: Disclosed herein is a box insert for protecting bottles. The box insert is formed from a piece of cardboard with fold lines. When the cardboard is folded along the lines and a bottle is placed within the cardboard, the bottle's sides are surrounded by cardboard. At least one bottom and top cut am provided through the cardboard across one of the fold lines. When the cardboard is pushed below the bottom cut and above the top cut, the cardboard folds inward to create a bottom and top indentation to hold the bottle away from the bottom and top of the box. If the bottle has a neck, the top indentation is positioned next to the bottle's neck above the body of the bottle. Usually the top indentation is formed from two top cuts. The inserts and bottles are then placed in a box for shipping. The cardboard inserts provide cardboard indentations that cushion and provide a small space between the bottom and top of the box.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 1996Date of Patent: March 24, 1998Inventor: Bruce Cappels

Patent number: 4561542Abstract: A fragile article such as an electric lamp having a glass bulb of spherical, paraboloidal or general pear-shaped configuration is protectively packaged by inserting it into snug slip-fitted relationship with an open-ended hexagonal sleeve-like carton of boxboard or other suitable packaging material. Parts of opposing walls of the carton are cut, scored and interconnected to provide a foldable flap assembly that is automatically actuated when the carton is expanded from collapsed condition and is then converted in "snap-like fashion" into a laterally-extending platform that locks the carton in its fully-erected tubular configuration. The platform is provided with a suitable aperture which frictionally grips the basal end portion of the inserted lamp and thus holds the lamp in loaded position within the carton.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1984Date of Patent: December 31, 1985Assignee: North American Philips CorporationInventors: Edward Przepiora, Gerald T. Patent number: 4498580Abstract: An electric lamp bulb (or similar fragile article) is retained in suspended centralized position within a collapsible open-ended carton of rectangular sleeve-like configuration by a dual-panel liner that extends across the interior of the carton and has apertured medial parts which nestingly receive and interlock with the bulbous portion of the lamp bulb. Each of the liner-panels has a pair of hinged flaps that swing in opposite directions and are displaced in criss-cross fashion by the bulbous part of the lamp bulb to form a single aperture in the associated liner-panel and a pair of cradle-like structures. The hinged flaps are so shaped and dimensioned that their free ends are pressed against the adjacent walls and diagonally-opposite corners of the carton by the inserted lamp bulb and thus produce buttressing forces which not only counteract the natural tendency of the carton to collapse but lock the carton in its erected form.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 1983Date of Patent: February 12, 1985Assignee: North American Philips Electric Corp.Inventors: Edward J. Getz, Gerald T. Lombardi

Patent number: 4445613Abstract: A paperboard container and blank therefor. The container is in the form of a tube leaving a recessed bottom closure, the closure defined by bottom-forming panels, the bottom closure having an opening frictionally engaging the threaded end of a light bulb. The container top has a plurality of inwardly folding top closure panels, each formed from a hinged pair of panels. The top closure panels exhibit; in one form of the container, a snap action when closed, to thereby further inhibit accidental opening of the top closure prior to intended removal of the light bulb. When the top closure panels are snapped inwardly and downwardly, the upper portion of the container becomes tapered, permitting it to fit into the recessed bottom of a similar container stacked thereon. The ends of top closure panels conform to the shape of the upper end of the light bulb, thus resiliently supporting it at a plurality of angularly spaced points.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1982Date of Patent: May 1, 1984Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventor: Benjamin J. One long side of the packaging strip is formed with a pair of lengthwise incisions to form a central portion in contact with the convex portion of the lamp envelope and a pair of edge portions extending along the central portion and being in opposite lateral contact with the lamp envelope. The lamp is arranged asymmetrically with respect to such two edge portions with the lamp cap positioned between the central portion and the flatly engaged ends of the packaging strip. A lengthwise extending opening is formed in the other long side for displaying part of the lamp, with a pair of adjoining edge portions. At least part of the opening boundary is in contact with the lamp envelope to keep the lamp fixed in place.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1981Date of Patent: May 31, 1983Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventor: Franciscus M. Patent number: 4345687Abstract: A collapsible carton for containing and securely retaining an automobile headlamp comprises four wall panels hinged together to form a tube and an interior lamp-retaining strap hinged at its opposite ends to opposite carton wall panels. The strap has a two-ply construction along the segment thereof which engages around the lamp so that it does not tear upon insertion of the lamp into the carton. Also, the strap includes a special oblique fold line which assures that the strap opens out into the proper position when the carton is erected. A blank for forming such a carton is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 1981Date of Patent: August 24, 1982Assignee: Robertson Paper Box Co., Inc.Inventor: Thomas L. Davidson

Patent number: 4326633Abstract: A container preferably supporting a sealed beam headlight in which a pair of opposite flaps at each end are each provided with a short flap extending partially across each of the original flaps and secured thereto. The short adhesive flaps in turn have a longer flap attached thereto wherein the sum of the lengths of the longer flap and the short adhesive flap is greater than that of the first flap so that when the first flap is folded into closed position, the additional flap connected to the adhesive flap necessarily moves down into a diagonal relationship between the closing flap and the inside of the side wall. This structure is repeated on both sides at both ends. The diagonal flaps cushion the headlight. Each of the diagonal flaps in turn has a further flap which in the closed condition of the container extends along the inside of the side wall.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1980Date of Patent: April 27, 1982Assignee: Champion International CorporationInventors: Joseph F.
