  • Patent number: 5158678
Abstract: This invention pertains to a multi-stage separator vessel through which the to-be-cleaned fluid flows. Aeration assemblies within the inner cells disperse micro-fine gas bubbles into the fluid for cleaning purposes. Additionally, the inlet piping contains a separator that begins the separation process before this fluid is discharged into the first cell. An L-shaped passageway interconnects the various flotation cells of this separator with the entrance of each such passageway being at an elevation below its exit. A weir is located within each flotation cell that is adjustable as needed. This weir empties into a channel alongside the separator vessel that collects the separated contaminants flowing over the weir for later disposal.

  • Patent number: 5151177
Abstract: A method and apparatus for aeration of waste water in a dissolved air flotation waste water treatment system includes a container for receiving and retaining waste water for settling of heavy particles and flotation of light particles to the surface of the waste water. Waste water is removed from the container and supplied to a free standing tank. Pressure in the tank is maintained at a predetermined level through the injection of compressed air into the tank. Waste water removed from the tank is pumped through a multiple jet configuration wherein air from the tank is entrained in the waste water as the water is injected back into the tank. The aerated water is discharged from the tank back into the container, thereby providing an efficient aeration process. Aerating the water in a free standing tank separate from the container increases clarification quality as a result of reduced disturbance of the particles floated to the surface of the waste water and reduced need for chemical addition to the waste water.

  • Patent number: 5131980
Abstract: The removal of sticky contaminants during the production of recycled paper is accomplished utilizing a hydrocyclone froth flotation process. Paper having sticky contaminants from labels, tapes, hot melts, and other tacky substances, is reduced to a finely comminuted liquid solids suspension of about 1-4% consistency. The suspension is introduced into a first end of a vortex in a hydrocyclone, and the air is sparged radially inwardly into the suspension vortex by passing it through a porous inner wall of the hydrocyclone. Ligher weight sticky contaminants move to the center of the hydrocyclone, facilitated by the radially inward movement of the sparging air, and hydrophobic sticky contaminants attach to the air bubbles and form a foam. The foam and lightweight sticky contaminants are removed from the first end of the vortex, while the pulp which has had sticky contaminants removed therefrom is discharged from the second end of the vortex, opposite the first end.

  • Patent number: 5078921
Abstract: A column flotation cell includes a fluid vessel, an exteriorly mounted microbubble generator, conduits for conducting a pressurized mixture of bubbles and liquid from the generator to the vessel, features for inhibiting the coalescence and enlargement of the bubbles prior to their introduction into the vessel, and an arrangement for introducing the bubble/liquid mixture into the vessel and for distributing the mixture uniformly throughout the vessel cross-section. Coalescence and enlargement of the bubbles are inhibited by limiting the length of the mixture-conducting conduits, and by designing the conduits so as to provide a substantially uniform and continuous flow diameter. The uniform and continuous nature of the flow diameter reduces local disturbances of fluid flow which would otherwise occur at discontinuities in the flow path, tending to cause coalescence and enlargement of the bubbles.

  • Patent number: 5069751
Abstract: Deinking of paper having print during the production of recycled paper is accomplished by a froth flotation process using a hydrocyclone. A finely comminuted liquid solids used paper suspension having a consistency of about 1 to 4% is introduced into a generally vertical axis vortex provided in a hydrocyclone. Air is sparged into the suspension in the vortex, by passing through a porous inner wall of the hydrocyclone, to cause ink particles to attach to the air bubbles and to rise in a foam while cellulosic pulp moves downwardly in the vortex. The foam--containing the ink particles--and the pulp are removed from the vortex in separate streams. The pulp is deaerated and the air component of the foam is removed in the cyclone. About 5-15% of the total flow of the suspension is removed with the foam in each stage, and about 95-85% with the pulp.

Abstract: A waste paper de-inking system of this invention agitates and mixes waste paper dissolving slurry and treating gas by a multi-stage type vapor-liquid mixer before a floatator treating step, separates and finely pulverizes ink and sticky matters adhered to fiber in the waste paper dissolving slurry and sufficiently absorbs and contains the treating gas in the slurry before reaching the lower most stage to facilitate de-inking operation in later floatators. Further, the high tower multi-stage vapor-liquid mixer can be utilized also as a floatator to reduce a required floor area and required power consumption of the system.Further, high temperature exhaust gas containing SO.sub.2 produced in a factory is utilized as the treating gas to perform various operations, such as desulfurization, heat recovery, bleaching and also purification of a factory environment, thereby a more economical waste paper de-inking system is provided.

  • Patent number: 4971731
Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating microbubbles in a flowing liquid stream for use in a froth flotation system. The system utilizes a microbubble generator having a tubular housing with an inlet end and an outlet end. Located coaxially within the housing is an inner member with an elongated, tapered, exterior surface. A porous tubular sleeve is mounted between the housing and the inner member coaxially therewith to define with the cylindrical interior surface of the housing an elongated air chamber of annular cross section. The porous sleeve has a cylindrical inner surface that defines with the exterior surface of the inner member an elongated liquid flow chamber of thin, annular cross section. An aqueous liquid is supplied to the liquid flow chamber at a relatively high flow rate and air under pressure is supplied to the air chamber so that air is forced radially inwardly through the porous sleeve to be diffused in the form of microbubbles in the flowing stream.

  • Patent number: 4940534
Abstract: A flotation chamber separates fine kaolin particles or the like by flotation out of a slurry. A generally cylindrical column has an inlet for injecting slurry into the column, a froth launder at an upper end of the column, and a tailings outlet at the lower end of the column. A draft tube is vertically oriented within the column and has upper and lower open ends. A sparger within the draft tube injects air into the slurry within the draft tube, and a rotary impeller immediately above the top end of the draft tube produces a fine bubble in the slurry and permits quiescent zones in the slurry above and below the position of the impeller. Aeration of the slurry supplied to the impeller lowers power draw.

  • Patent number: 4892648
Abstract: A process for removing mineral matter from coal is disclosed. The process involves creating ultrafine coal by pulverizing the coal feed material and mixing it with an aqueous amine solution. The coal/amine solution is fed into a flotation cell and gaseous carbon dioxide is charged into the cell. The carbon dioxide reacts with the amine solution to form bubbles which carry the "clean" coal component of the coal feed material to the top of the cell for subsequent removal from the cell. The bubbles are reduced in size as they move up within the cell. The mineral matter, which is heavier than the clean coal, stays at the bottom of the cell and can be removed spearately. The amine and the carbon dioxide used in the process can be recycled. An associated apparatus is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4883586
Abstract: Ores containing mineral values are separated into two slurries, one having primarily fine particles and gangue and the other having primarily coarse particles. The slurry having fine particles and gangue is adjusted to a solids content of less than about 15 percent, as necessary, and then conditioned by the addition of appropriate promoter reagents, a flotation collector, and a froth modifier. The gangue, containing a disproportionate share of impurities, is floated in a column flotation cell wherein the fine particulates are not mechanically agitated, and removed. The remaining fine particulate underflow, containing a disproportionate share of the minearl values, is then processed directly, or combined with the slurry containing the coarse particulate to yield a flow having reduced impurity content and increased recovery of the mineral values.
