Abstract: Test methods are provided for determining the amount of contaminants in a carbon black sample. The test procedures include screening a known amount of carbon black to separate larger particles in the sample from smaller particles. The sample and/or separated larger particles are treated with a separating force to disperse larger agglomerates of carbon black into smaller aggregates of carbon black and to separate contaminants from carbon black aggregates. The treated sample or separated larger particles can then be screened to again separate larger particles from smaller particles. The separating force may be a water wash stream which contacts the sample or separated larger particles at a pressure of from about 15 psi to about 35 psi. The separating force may instead or additionally be generated by a dispersing agent which can be combined with the sample or separated larger particles in an amount or concentration sufficient to disperse larger agglomerates of carbon black into smaller carbon black aggregates.

  • Patent number: 5601690
Abstract: A method for screening fibrous stock slurry having a rotor impeller and a screen, in which accepts quality and throughput may be adjusted without stopping the screening process by relative displacement of the clearance between the rotor and the screen plate. In one version, this relative displacement is accomplished by axial displacement of frusto-conical portions of the bladed rotor and screen. The relative axial displacement changes the degree of pulp disturbance in a primary screening zone, thus causing throughput and accepts quality to change accordingly. The primary screening zone may be between the rotor impeller and the screen, or it may be on the other side of the screen, in which case the blades on the screen are designed to permit a portion of the pulp slurry to flow through the screen into a region between the rotor impeller and the screen.

  • Patent number: 5137621
Abstract: A wood chip screen system which includes a gyratory screen apparatus (10) and a disk screen (12). The gyratory system apparatus includes a top screen element (14) and a lower screen (16). The inflow end of the disk screen (12) is immediately adjacent the outflow end of the top screen element (14), while the lower screen element (16) underlies the disk screen (12) for a substantial distance. The size of the openings in the top screen element (14) may be changed by the operator to optimize the operation of the system. The openings in top screen element (14) may also vary along its length. The system produces chips within the acceptable size range, chips which are below the acceptable size range (pin chips and fines), and over-thick chips, which are subsequently typically transmitted to a chip size reduction apparatus such as a slicer.

  • Patent number: 5078274
Abstract: A system and process for sizing wood chips to provide a flow of wood chips which are acceptable for feeding to a digester of a pulping system. A flow management screen station is provided which divides an incoming unacceptable flow into two fractional flows, neither of which is acceptable for feeding to the digester. One of the output flows from the flow management screen is concentrated in oversized and overthick chips compared to the incoming flow. The other output flow is concentrated in undersized chips and particles compared to the incoming flow. The output flows from the flow management screen are then fed to second and third screening stations which separate "overs" from the respective flows to provide acceptable flows to the digester.

  • Patent number: 4896835
Abstract: A screening machine has a rotating screening drum for screening dirt or other material to a desired size through the screen openings, and is made so that it reduces clogging of the screen, even when rocks, dirt clods, and moist dirt is being screened. The rotating drum has interior brushes and a beater bar for keeping the material moving on the interior of the drum. A holding bin and feeding conveyor is used at the input end of the machine and is positioned to empty into an input pulverizer or shredder, that has a powered drum that will break the dirt clods up. The holding bin has a cover grate to remove excessively large rocks and the like. The output from the pulverizing roller also drops material onto a grate through which the material passes before reaching the screening drum. These grates are called "grizzly bars" and help in the classification process. The screening drum can be converted to a mixer drum by lining the screen wall with sheet metal and removing the normally used interior brushes.
