    Abstract: The invention is an automatic, unmanned, powered, variable speed transfer table for a finger joint machine which receives a controlled supply of blocks from a lineal block feeder. The slat chain is composed of two chain loops, connected at regular, equal intervals by slats. Blocks containing unacceptable moisture fall through a gap in the working table while blocks with acceptable moisture are pushed by the slats over a door covering the gap and onto an outfeed table. The slats are synchronized to the lugs on the finger joint machine's lug chain and deposit correctly aligned and orientated blocks precisely on the lug chain. The slat chain then rotates upward and loops back over the working table and then down, under the infeed conveyor to re-emerge at the even ending conveyor.

    Abstract: To facilitate separation of lumber pieces that are of different species, an indicator liquid is sprayed on to a fresh cut end of each lumber piece to produce a characteristic reaction, e.g. based upon pH. After a suitable interval the coated ends of the lumber pieces are optically scanned, the scanned image being analyzed spectrographically to identify the species of the lumber piece, e.g. as between spruce and fir. The lumber pieces are separated accordingly so that further processing thereof, e.g. kiln drying can be done under optimal conditions for that species.

    Abstract: A heat transfer recording sheet producing apparatus and a roll shaft supplying apparatus. A web supplying unit supplies a web which is printed with end marks by a gravure printing unit. A drying unit dries the end marks, and then the web is wound onto a roll shaft in a sheet winding unit. The sheet winding unit is provided with roll shafts from the roll shaft supplying apparatus. After winding, a roll form is produced and is discharged to a discharge unit. The roll shaft supplying apparatus has a slit detecting unit to detect the presence or absence of a slit in a roll shaft and to detect the orientation of the roll shaft, and a gripping/turning unit operates on the roll shaft in response to a signal from the slit detecting unit. If a slit is detected and the orientation of the roll shaft is correct, the gripping/turning unit moves the roll shaft to a second discharge unit which supplies the roll shaft to the sheet winding unit.

    Abstract: Veneer sorting apparatus for sorting a moving stream of arbitrarily ordered full width, random width, fishtail and trash veneer pieces in response to a signal representative of a characteristic such as width. Each piece is deflected into an appropriate output path: one path contains substantially only full width pieces, a second path contains substantially only trash pieces, and a third path contains substantially only fishtail and random width veneer pieces. A first vacuum source is coupled to a first series of vacuum ports positioned closely proximate to and spaced transversely across the moving stream. Vacuum applied through the ports initially draws all the pieces toward the full width output path. Dampers responsive to the characteristic signal temporarily decouple the vacuum ports from the vacuum source upon detection of a trash piece, allowing the trash to fall away from the full width output path.

The invention eliminates the need to build water-operated stone catchers as conventionally used for the removal of stones.

The apparatus compares the apparent density with selectable density(ies) used as criterium for sorting.

    Abstract: A system for sorting lumber using a scanning camera that generates separate red, green and in some cases blue outputs to scan selected length increments along the surface of a piece of lumber and such data collected for each color is each separately histogrammed to produce a frequency distribution of color intensity. The data is analyzed to determine the mean values for each color in the selected lengths and the lengths characterized based on these mean values into specific colors. The lumber pieces may be automatically severed into pieces having significant differences in color and the pieces of significantly different colors may be automatically collected in different groupings. In an alternative arrangement the histogram for selected color is analyzed to determine the frequency distribution and degree of frequency variability to determine if it is to be classified as vertical or flat grained.
