  • Patent number: 9908800
Abstract: A system that recycles waste so that the effluent coming out of the system actually equals a potable water standard with essentially no contaminated sludge. The solids in wastewater are subjected to aeration and enzymes in a digester for a period of time. The cleanest portion of the water from the digester is then clarified. Sludge, as well as scum, from the clarifier is vacuumed back to the digester. Clear water from the clarifier is delivered to a Recycling stage for filtering to remove suspended solids. When the recycling process housing reaches saturation, a back-flushing process with clean water sends all of the captured suspended solids back into the Digester.

  • Patent number: 8940159
Abstract: The invention includes a method for the optimization of the soluble CO2 concentration in the aeration basin of an activated sludge system, which significantly improves the specific growth rate of the nitrifying bacteria. The result is a reduction in capital and energy costs for municipalities. The rate of nitrification is a product of the nitrifying bacteria biomass concentration and the specific growth rate of the bacteria. In the activated sludge system, the biomass concentration is maintained at high concentrations by reducing the wasting rate. The specific growth rate is a function of the ammonium concentration and the environmental conditions. Here, the inventors show that growth of nitrifying bacteria is inhibited when the soluble CO2 concentration is elevated beyond certain parameters. Elevated soluble CO2 concentration also reduces the pH, which also impacts the rate of growth of nitrifying bacteria.

  • Patent number: 8728330
Abstract: A chemical liquid supply device has a pump provided with a pump chamber which is expanded and contracted by an elastically deformable bellows, and chemical liquid in a chemical liquid container flows into the pump chamber through a suction channel. The chemical liquid in the pump chamber is discharged through a discharge channel to a discharge nozzle. A looped circulation channel for returning the chemical liquid supplied from the pump chamber to the pump chamber is connected to the pump, and provided with an expanding and contracting portion. A filter for filtering the chemical liquid which is returned to the pump chamber is provided to the circulation channel. Since flow resistance of the filter is not applied to the pump when the chemical liquid is discharged from a discharge nozzle, it's possible to discharge a specific amount of chemical liquid from the discharge nozzle with a high degree of accuracy.

Abstract: A normal flow filtration system having a housing with one or more filters contained within a bowl and attached to the outlet of the system. Liquid enters the bowl, contacts the surfaces of the one or more filters. Impurities are trapped in the filter and the filtered liquid flows through to the outlet. Parameter(s) such as flow rate, transmembrane pressure drop and/or time are measured and when met, filtration ceases. A backflushing occurs through the filter(s) so as to remove the impurities from the filter. This backwashed material is directed to an outlet of the bowl that is connected to a drain. Additionally a port formed in the side of the housing adjacent an outer surface of the filter(s) can be used to provide a lateral washing of the filter(s). The system is then recirculated in a downstream manner to reestablish equilibrium and filtration is then restarted.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for priming a kit for use in a therapeutic apheresis procedure with previously-collected blood prior to flowing the patient's whole blood into the inlet line of the kit, as part of a procedure in which a selected blood component is separated from a patient's whole blood, and replaced with a previously-collected blood component. The operator enters into the controller of the separation device the hematocrit value of the previously-collected blood. Then, in response to prompts by the controller, the operator enters a target hematocrit value for the previously-collected blood and an identification of the portion of the kit to be primed. The identified portion of the kit is automatically primed with the previously-collected blood. The patient is then connected to the inlet line of the kit in response to a prompt from the controller and the therapeutic procedure is commenced.

  • Patent number: 8628666
Abstract: Treatment systems are described which uncouple the solids retention time (SRT) of the recycling bacteria from the wasting bacteria. Elevated recycling bacteria SRTs increase concentrations of nitrifying bacteria in the aeration basin and Anammox bacteria in the anoxic basin, improving nitrification and anaerobic ammonium oxidation. Fluorescence in situ hybridizations were used to identify and determine the abundance of nitrifying bacteria and Anammox bacteria (recycling bacteria) in freshly settled sludge of biological nutrient removal (BNR) secondary clarifiers. An uneven distribution was observed for recycling bacteria in two BNR systems. Settling patterns suggest microcolony formation processes are sensitive to the internal recycle rate, which allow for rapid recycling bacteria microcolony growth by increasing circulation of flocs through the aeration and anoxic basins. Uncoupling the SRT enhances aeration and/or anoxic basin utilization and reduces the overall hydraulic residence time.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for filtering a fluid containing nanoparticles. The systems and methods generally include introducing a stream of the nanoparticle-containing fluid into a holding vessel, and extracting at least a part of a nanoparticle-containing fluid accumulated in the holding vessel. The extracted nanoparticle-containing fluid is passed through a filtration module to separate a nanoparticle-containing retentate from a permeate, and the retentate is returned to the vessel. The filtration cycle can be repeated until a desired concentration of the nanoparticles is achieved in the holding vessel. In many embodiments, the generation of the nanoparticle-containing fluid and its filtration are performed concurrently.
