    Abstract: The present invention relates to novel ex situ processes for simple and economical destruction of air, water, and soil contaminants using naturally occurring microorganisms that are widely available in the environment. The processes utilize novel closed-loop recycle schemes which dramatically improve the efficiency, economics, and practicability of destruction of a wide variety of contaminants, especially VOCs and chloroethylenes, and particularly trichloroethylene (TCE). The processes may be applied on a batch or continuous basis to contaminated soil and groundwater, to contaminated effluents from a wide variety industrial operations, or to wherever such amenable contaminants are present. Certain contaminants, particularly chloroethylenes, are known to be difficult to biodegrade aerobically to non-toxic products without the employment of a primary substrate to induce cometabolic degradation.

Therefore, the fluorine in the waste water can be treated by the calcium carbonate mineral 9 placed in the anaerobic tank 3 and the aerobic tank 15 with the formation of calcium fluoride 11. The organic matter of the surface active agent and so on in the waste water can be treated by the microorganism included in the biologically treated water. Furthermore, nitrate nitrogen can be treated so as to be reduced to a nitrogen gas in the anaerobic tank 3, while ammoniacal nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen can be treated so as to be oxidized in the aerobic tank 15.

A sludge-accumulator is provided for collecting the sludge, which is settled by gravity during the reaction and produced by the mixer, to the center of the anaerobic reactor.

    Abstract: A system and process for removing contaminants from water and wastewater, where the water or wastewater is transformed into purified water that can be discharged to the environment. Wastewater is transported through several stations for purification, including an electrochemical cell. The purification process begins by sending the wastewater to a classifier through an in-line basket strainer. The wastewater stream in the classifier is drawn through a solid-liquid hydrocyclone, which returns the solids to the classifier and sends the remaining liquid to feed tanks. Contaminants that float are removed from the wastewater by skimming from the surface of the feed tank. The wastewater underflow from the feed tanks is pumped directly to the electrochemical cell where it enters into the bottom of the cell, and exits from the top of the cell. The discharge, including coagulated solids, hydrogen gas, and oxygen gas, is mixed with a polymer as well as compressed air just prior to entering a static in-line mixer.

The looped cord biomedia is interlaced, under tension, between the upper and lower concentric hanger rings to create a plurality of parallel, vertically extending, linear lengths of looped cord biomedia. The concentric hanger rings are radially spaced, and include circumferentially spaced notches for interlacing the looped cord biomedia. The spaced lengths of looped cord biomedia provide increased surface area while allowing sufficient space for water flow and air flow. Tensioning of the biomedia creates a highly desirable laminar downward flow of wastewater over the surfaces of the biomedia.

    Abstract: The Sewage Treatment System with Chlorinator (“STSC”) processes sewage for buildings not connected to a municipal sewer system. It employs a two stage process for cleaning sewage in a single, light-weight, easy-to-install unit. Sewage is initially cleaned in the aerobic tank, which is divided into an inner chamber and an outer chamber by a funnel-shaped clarifier hanging down in the aerobic tank, with the opening in the bottom of the clarifier held above the bottom of the aerobic tank. Air droplines hang down in the outer chamber of the aerobic tank, so that sewage in the outer chamber is aerated, stimulating aerobic microorganisms which digest the sewage. The sewage in the outer chamber then moves into the inner chamber inside the clarifier where gravity separates solids from the effluent. This cleaned effluent is then drained to the post-treatment tank for the second cleaning stage, where it is chlorinated and stored for discharge.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for purifying separator waste water from a dry cleaning process. The present invention utilizes 3 stages of purification. In Stage one, highly contaminated separator waste water is put into a solvent separator tank. Liquid solvent settles out of the separator waste water, sink to the bottom of the solvent separation tank where it accumulates below the separated water. In Stage 2 air bubbles are introduced through the separated water, stripping out much of the solvent which is dissolved in the separated water and reducing the dissolved solvent concentration. This air stripping process dramatically extends to useful life of the granulated carbon in the granulated eaton filter. Stage 3 takes the air stripped water and filters it through a granulated carbon filter, which results in the carbon purified water having a dissolved solvent of less than 0.7 parts per million. The carbon purified water can then be safely and economically disposed of without harming the environment.

An external pump transfers liquid from the bottom of one compartment to the bottom of the other compartment and channels the liquid between the flexible bands and below the partition in a uniform and calibrated manner over its entire length. At the same time, liquid passes from this second compartment to the first one above the float. The float meters and calibrates the liquid flow over its entire length, thereby generating a surface stream which discharges into the filters.

Air exposure is limited to the beginning portion of the spiral flow pattern where the process is still in its aerobic stage. Denitrification is completed in an anoxic stage as waste water progresses further along the pattern. Aeration and motivation are provided by a lift tube/aerator assembly. By employing a false bottom, frictional surface area is decreased and sediment accumulation is eliminated between two vertically adjacent flow paths to provide energy efficient water treatment at low minimum flow rates.

    Abstract: An anaerobic sludge digester has a top, a bottom, sloped sides leading to the bottom, and a draft tube with an upper end spaced downward of the top of the digester and a lower end spaced upward of the bottom of the digester. The digester has a discharge mouth positioned within the digester to receive heavy material that is pumped from the bottom of the digester and which flows outward across the liquid surface. One or more spray nozzles are located above the liquid surface to break up foam and emulsions. The mouth may also be used to effectively remove scum and light solids from the liquid surface. A shutoff valve on a discharge pipe extending from the discharge mouth can be closed while sludge is added to the system, causing the liquid level to rise above the mouth.

In particular, "dead areas" or less active areas of the liquid, which are not sufficiently reached by gas-mixing from a single draft tube in many basin configurations, are reached by circulation from the peripheral draft tubes and such dead areas are virtually eliminated.
