  • Patent number: 10240288
Abstract: The invention relates to methods of producing microfibrillated cellulose (MFC). According to the invention a fibrous pulp suspension is fibrillated mechanically at a consistency of less than 12.5%, dewatered to raise the consistency of the fibrillated suspension to at least 12.5%, and then subjected in the dewatered condition to further fibrillation. Alternatively an initially fibrillated fibrous pulp suspension may be dewatered and fibrillated in the dewatered condition, after which these dewatering and fibrillating steps are repeated one or more times so that pulp consistency is increased for each fibrillation step. The goals of raising the consistency between subsequent fibrillations are energy saving and an increased aspect ratio in MFC. The invention even comprises uses of the MFC product, e.g. as an additive for papermaking furnish or injection molded plastic composites.

  • Patent number: 7470365
Abstract: The present invention provides a system for sludge treatment which transfers sludge into a dewatering device while maintaining the sludge density at a predetermined level constant suitable for dewatering the sludge even when the density of the precipitated sludge varies, thus improving the sludge treating efficiency and sludge dewatering efficiency, and reducing the amount of a coagulant to be used. In the system for sludge treatment, a sludge concentration device is installed in a mixing flocculation tank. Thus, the sludge is mixed with the coagulant and flocculated in the mixing flocculation tank to produce flocs and a supernatant, while the supernatant is directly discharged from the mixing flocculation tank. Furthermore, the amount of the supernatant is controlled to maintain the desired density of the flocs to be transferred to the dewatering device. Thus, the dewatering device can be stably operated.

  • Patent number: 5164083
Abstract: Liquid is contained in a source container and oil is removed from the source container and deposited into a destination container. The apparatus includes a housing having a base, at least one wall upstanding from, and encompassing the periphery of, the base, and a top cover. A two-sided piece of material made of rubber, nylon, vinyl, or other oil gathering capable material forms an endless belt or ribbon. At least one scraper device mounted within the housing facilitates removal of oil from the material. A bi-directional pulley system including a disk rotatably mounted to the housing, adapted for engaging the material, and an electric motor adapted for engaging and rotating the disk, circulate the material from the surface of the liquid through the scraper device and back to the liquid surface. A sump situated within the base of the housing is disposed to collect oil removed from the material, and a conduit from the sump to the destination container conveys oil from the sump to the destination container.

  • Patent number: 4538765
Abstract: Waste paper is defiberized within a container or receptacle in a thick stock range at a low water level. Thereafter, by further infeeding water, the obtained slurry or the like is diluted to a consistency of less than 7% while continuing the defiberizing operation. Finally, the obtained stock suspension is withdrawn through a sieve or screen located at the floor of a defiberizing container. The defiberizing container or receptacle used for performing the method possesses a lower region having a smaller diameter, above which there is located an upper region having a larger diameter.

  • Patent number: 4320002
Abstract: A cleaning filter has a cylindrical tank through which an axial pipe extends, the pipe having a screw blade attached thereon and being rotatable in the tank. A drum rotatably carried on the axial pipe is disposed within the tank and around the screw blade, the drum having a cylindrical body and an end cover mounted on the cylindrical body such that the cylindrical body is rotatable relative to the end cover. The end cover has a cleansing agent inlet and a cleansing agent outlet with the cleansing agent being removed from the drum by rotating the pipe means and the screw blade, the latter engaging the cleansing agent in the drum to thereby move the cleansing agent axially to the cleansing agent outlet.

  • Patent number: 4298473
Abstract: A filter for removing solids from a liquid of the type wherein a rotatable basket or drum has media inside straining from inside out. A power operated conveyor is mounted in the drum above the axis of rotation for receiving and positively removing solids. Thus, a liquid level is possible above the axis of rotation but below the conveyor so that a large filter area is in contact with the liquid while not interfering with the operation of the conveyor. A retractable scoop is provided for positively delivering the solids to the conveyor with an alternate sealing arrangement. A discharge ramp is carried adjacent an end of a baffle which extends above a liquid inlet upwardly toward the conveyor and is spaced from an inner wall of the drum to collect solids therebetween and accommodate the scoop for their removal. An improved means for equalizing the distribution of the liquid within the drum is also provided.

  • Patent number: 4267035
Abstract: A rotary screening apparatus is provided for separating impurities in suspensions such as paper pulp or other slurries. The apparatus has a pressurized housing with a cylindrical screenplate separating the housing into an outer annular accepts chamber and an inner feed chamber. An impeller with one or more blades is mounted inside the feed chamber and imparts a rotary motion to the slurry. A series of horizontal baffles attached to the impeller divide the feed chamber into at least three sections. Piping is provided to inject dilution liquid into at least the lower two sections at separately controllable rates to compensate for the dewatering which occurs in the inlet section. The ability to treat and control individually each successive section of the screening device enables essentially complete separation of desirable fibers from impurities.

  • Patent number: 4215447
Abstract: A process and apparatus for washing high consistency fibre stock in the de-inking of paper. Grey stock is passed along a passage from a grey stock inlet to an outlet for cleaned stock. The passage is defined by a filter screen preferably of wire gauze. Within the passage is disposed a stirring member. Washing liquid such as water is introduced into the passage preferably by means of apertures in a central portion of the stirring member. Effluent liquid passes through the screen for extraction through a suitable outlet, or for recirculation. The arrangement is such that relative rotation of the screen and member results in clusters of stock fibres, which move around the passage as they pass therealong. The stirring member preferably includes a plurality of longitudinally extending, axis parallel bars radially spaced from the central portion.

  • Patent number: 4162978
Abstract: A stationary chamber having a perforated peripheral wall contains an axial rotor having rubber-like radial carrier blades which, as the rotor rotates, are indented at their outer edges by guide means having helical turns extending along said peripheral wall. A passage allows ambient gas to enter the chamber so that the rotor's action on a liquid-solids mixture entering a first part of the chamber maintains a free liquid surface therein. The carrier blades and rotor coact with the helical turns to carry a liquid-bearing cake of the solids through the free liquid surface and thence through a second part of the chamber to a solids outlet, during draining of liquid from the cake through the perforated peripheral wall.
