  • Patent number: 5411669
Abstract: A process and apparatus for the treatment of pre-concentrated solid-liquid mixture streams, and in particular the dewatering of solid-liquid mixture streams metering the mixture from an intermediate container to a liquid separation device. The process accounts for variable inlet conditions or parameters of the solid-liquid mixture stream which is supplied to the intermediate container. A preset metering stream volume of the mixture is supplied to the liquid separating device for separating liquid by a metering device as a function of the level of the mixture in the intermediate container. The metering device can optionally comminute the solid-liquid mixture stream to be treated. The throughput rate of the liquid separating device is automatically adjusted according to the conveying rate of the metering device.

  • Patent number: 5275740
Abstract: A method for controlling the filling of a filter press with slurry according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention includes the sequentially executed steps of: gradually increasing the pressure of the slurry supplied to thee press until the slurry pressure reaches an upper pressure limit; recording a trigger point in time at which the slurry pressure reaches the upper pressure limit; and determining whether the slurry pressure subsequently falls below a lower pressure limit within a predetermined period of time commencing at the trigger point. If the slurry pressure does fall below the lower pressure limit within the predetermined period of time, then the above-listed sequence of steps is repeated until the slurry pressure fails to fall below the lower pressure limit within the predetermined period of time, thereby indicating that the press is full and terminating the process.

  • Patent number: 5185048
Abstract: Each separator frame constitutes a single part. It is made by assembling two thermoplastic films having the shape of the seal plane and sandwiched over two different types of thermoplastic expanded structure, e.g. polyethylene grids, a first one of these structures being designed to occupy the central opening of the frame and the second type of structure being designed to occupy the diffusers. According to the invention, and prior to assembly, the first expanded structure is crushed by hot compression over its entire area apart from the central opening. This crushing reduces the thickness of the expanded structure, preferably by more than 50%. Cut-outs are formed in the first structure after it has been compressed in this way and cut-out pieces of the second expanded structure are placed therein, which pieces are themselves crushed in side strips for the purpose of retaining them in the assembly.

  • Patent number: 5167836
Abstract: The invention concerns a method for controlling a press filter, said press filter having electric motors for operating said press filter. At least one of said electric motors of said press filter is driven by a frequency filter. A logic control unit is used for sending a program-controlled analog signal to said frequency converter. The output current from said frequency converter having a frequency proportional to the magnitude of said analog signal received from said logic control unit is used for driving the press filter's electric motors, whose rotational speeds thereby become proportional to the drive current frequency. A desired electric motor is individually started by way of applying power to the motor via a switch element which is activated by a signal from the logic control unit.

Abstract: A filter plate press or an electrolyzer cell has a series of filter plates or cell frames, respectively, which are moved as a stack against a press or cell headpiece by a follower moved by one or more rodded cylinders mounted on a fixed bracket. Scissors mechanisms extending on each side of the press/cell holder and between the bracket and follower assure precise parallel movement of the follower with respect to the headpiece. To accommodate any cumulative errors in the stack dimensions the scissor mechanisms are disengageable upon closure of the press/cell holder so that the follower has freedom to match the abutting surface of the plate/cell frame stack and thus evenly seal the abutting peripheral edges of the plates/cell frames.

  • Patent number: 5133879
Abstract: The invention concerns a filtering procedure by which the solid matter and the fluid contained in a sludge are separated in a box filter. The sludge is passed in the filter into a filtering space (2) between two opposite filter cloths (3), where the fluid is separated, whereupon the cake (13) of solid matter produced is dried by passing a stream of air through it. The essential feature of the invention is that the drying is performed by passing a stream of air into the cake (13) first from one side and then from the opposite side of the filtering space (2) in such manner that the air flows in opposite directions through the cake during these drying phases. Penetrating through the filter cloth (3) into the cake, the air causes the cake to be detached from the cloth. When the filtering space is opened, the cake thus detached and dried can be removed directly without specific detaching efforts.

Abstract: A control system has been invented for feeding settled sludge to two filter presses without the use of a surge tank. The system provides for constant feed rates from a solids settling tank, even as filter press capacity decays and the filter press is taken off stream for dumping. This is accomplished by providing two modes of operation. The first mode provides for the feeding of a single filter press. The second mode provides control when both filter presses are fed. The second mode is actuated by elevated pressure differential across a filter press, which signals the valve to move, to bring a second filter press on line while compensating for flow rate and finally shuts down the first filter press after a timed interval. The need for a surge drum is eliminated by maintaining continuous upstream and downstream operation of the filter presses in a sludge dewatering process.
