  • Publication number: 20140318372
Abstract: A system using membranes for separating a desired component from a liquid or gas mixture to obtain a high-concentration organic solvent, such as in a plant for fermenting a biomass feedstock (e.g., corn or sugarcane) to produce ethanol. A module for removing water from the ethanol/water mixture comprises multiple vessels or elements connected together in series and supported by a frame. Each element includes a number of flow tubes concentrically enclosing a tubular membrane leaving an annular space between the membrane's outer wall and the flow tube's inner wall. The preferred membrane is a hollow ceramic (e.g., zeolite) tube. An ethanol/water vapor is passed through the space between the tube walls, and a vacuum is pulled on the membrane's hollow core. Water molecules selectively move through the membrane. Multiple passes through a series of elements having the concentric tubes and membranes gradually reduces the water content of the ethanol.

Abstract: A water treatment system having modular-filter based residential reverse osmosis (RO) system that passes a stream of purified water through an ultraviolet light (UV) filter twice to ensure the water is sterile, while using only one UV filter, thereby forcing the water through a UV filter twice in a modular-filter based RO system. The water treatment system also includes a system whereby water passes through the UV filter at both points using only one UV filter by employing a system whereby a purified water stream is passed through a single remineralization module twice. The present invention also includes the method for treating water through such double forced sterilization system.

Abstract: A pressure filtration system for cleaning residual quenching water of a gasifying device that gasifies carbon-containing fuels under elevated pressure is provided. The soot water from the quencher is passed to a filter system, which has pressure filter chambers operating alternately in filtering mode under gasifying pressure or in cleaning mode. The filtrate from these chambers is passed to a quenching water reservoir, from which the quencher is fed with quenching water. Only small temperature and pressure losses with respect to the residual quenching water leaving, and only a small additional amount of energy has to be expended to overcome the remaining pressure difference to bring the filtrate that is to be returned back to the gasifying pressure. The residual quenching water is cleaned substantially under gasifying pressure in a pressure filter, avoids flash evaporation of the residual quenching water into the vacuum area, with vapour cooling and a subsequent increase in pressure and reheating.

  • Patent number: 8557116
Abstract: The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for separating particles and dissolved matter from a fluid stream. Specifically, the present invention includes a first pressure source which transports untreated fluid into a separator annulus with a filter element disposed therein. The untreated fluid is placed under appropriate pressure sufficient to produce turbulent flow, increased particle kinetics and/or cavitation physics allowing the desired fluid to penetrate and pass into and through the filter media. The filtered fluid is then transported to a collection tank. The contaminant particulate matter retained by the filter media may be removed by the instantaneous reverse pressurization of the separator annulus by a second pressure source thereby removing the contaminant particles away from contact with the filter media, and which may then be transported to a waste collection tank or a concentrator for further treatment.
