  • Patent number: 4190530
Abstract: Samples to be analyzed, such as physiological fluids (blood, urine, etc.) may be processed using centrifugal techniques. The sample is centrifugally passed through a separation column to extract the desired component from the aqueous phase. Next, the extracted component is washed free of extraneous materials and then eluted from the separating column by centrifugally passing a suitable solvent therethrough. The aqueous phase and extracted components are collected in separate containers. To facilitate this method, an apparatus is provided that accommodates switching between fluid flow paths in a centrifuge. The centrifuge utilizes a swinging bucket rotor which contains a separating column, the top end of which employs a fluid reservoir for holding the sample to be extracted. Fluids are passed through the separating column (a first flow path) from a central distributor in the centrifuge rotor while in operation.

  • Patent number: 4136031
Abstract: An apparatus for the recovery of liquid from a liquid medium containing solids includes a rotatable outer drum having a liquid-permeable drum wall and containing liquid-absorbing material, a rotatable inner wall having a liquid impervious drum wall and being mounted for rotation within and eccentrically relative to the outer drum, the drums being rotatable in the same direction into the liquid medium so as to transport the material through a compression zone in which the material is compressed so as to remove absorbed liquid therefrom and subsequently through a pressure-relief zone in which the liquid-absorbing material is allowed to expand and to absorb liquid from the liquid medium, a device or devices contacting the exterior surface of the outer drum to remove solids deposited thereon, such devices being located between the zones, and a device for collecting liquid removed from the liquid-absorbing material in the compression zone.

  • Patent number: 4107041
Abstract: A continuous chromatographic separation is effected by a column packed with finely divided chromatographic particles, the nature of which depends on the materials to be separated. In the case of liquid systems, the cylinder containing chromatographic packing is substantially horizontal and is spun to develop substantial centrifugal force. Preferably, the cylinder is of suitable porous material, such as a ceramic of the type used for filtration. The liquid, having dissolved or suspended therein the constituents to be separated, is introduced at one end under substantial pressure, for example by a pump, which, preferably, rotates with the cylinder. The cylinder is supported along its length by non-corrosive, such as stainless steel, rings. The rings are held together by through-bolts and, if necessary, spacers. In the case of a porous ceramic cylinder, the pores are small, and there are stationary troughs at the peripheries of each pair of rings which receive liquid coming out.

  • Patent number: 3971842
Abstract: In a plant for uranium enrichment using a cascade of ion exchange beds, each bed operates more efficiently because an annular chamber is rotated about a stationary annular ion exchange bed at a speed corresponding to the speed of migration of a region so that, with respect to such rotating chamber, each of the regions of a system remains substantially stationary. An aqueous solution of ferric chloride is pumped to the ferric region and flows forwardly to the forwardly moving rear boundary of the uranium region.
