  • Publication number: 20120097607
Abstract: Waste water conditioning has nearly 150 years of history. During this time, a method has developed that is considered to be state of the art. While this method meets the requirements at hand, it is complicated and expensive. The novel method breaks down the rigidly entrenched method and simplifies it. In a plurality of stages, the only energy that is used is gravity, which is readily available and free of cost. Thus, an “alternative sewage treatment plant” has been developed, which has a simpler method and is less expensive in terms of investment costs and operating costs, at the same capacity, and requires only a fraction of the previous required surface area. The most important characteristic of the invention is that the novel method separates solids from waste water immediately after entering the sewage treatment plant. Mechanically purified water is much faster, easier and less expensive to purify. The paths pursued for conditioning of the sludge are also new.

Abstract: A variety of improved hydroclone based fluid filtering systems are described. The hydroclones generally include a tank having an internal chamber and a filter (preferably a surface filter) that is positioned within the internal chamber. The filter defines a filtered fluid chamber within the internal chamber of the tank. The hydroclone may be operated such that a vortex of flowing fluid is formed between the chamber wall and the filter with the filter being located in the center of the vortex. With this arrangement, the filter acts as a cross-flow filter. In one aspect of the invention, the filter is a stepped filter. In another aspect of the invention, the filter is an surface filter, as for example, an electroformed metal surface filter. In some preferred embodiments, the openings in the filter are arranged as slots that extend substantially vertically so that they are oriented substantially perpendicular to the flow path of fluid flowing in the adjacent portion of the vortex.

Abstract: A filter apparatus for separating particles from a liquid having a tank with a feed inlet, a gravitational settling zone and a filtration zone arranged downstream of the settling zone. Inside the tank are two transversely spaced-apart endless chains with transversely extending drivers fixed between the chains, the drivers and chains together forming a conveying apparatus driven by gear wheels and a drive motor. The filtration zone includes a vacuum chamber, which is formed partly by the tank and is arranged underneath the solid particle filtration apparatus. Between the unfiltered liquid region and the filtered liquid region is a filter media strip, which is pulled through the tank along a path which changes direction by the chains and drivers. Each chain has flexible metal strips that extend along the chain and over a plurality of chain links. The metal strips are fixed at one end and partially overlap.

Abstract: A settling grid separator apparatus and method of use which provides deep dehydration of high flow rate sludge in an environmentally friendly and energy efficient manner. The apparatus and method comprise and utilize an efficient mixing of the sludge with a flocculating agent or polymer solution, and sludge flow quieting techniques to reduce disturbances and promote flocculation of clustered solids. Free surface liquid rejection, a series of traps, and pressurized filtering utilize gravimetric, hydrometric, and densimetric techniques to separate liquid from suspended solids. Gravitational forces are utilized throughout the apparatus and method to promote separation of higher density solids from the lower density liquid carrier. Upon separation, solids with a minimal liquid content are controllably discharged for proper disposal or recycling.

Abstract: Systems and methods for extracorporeal processing of blood or other body fluid for the treatment of conditions, such as sepsis, autoimmune disease, or toxemia related to kidney failure, liver failure, or drug overdose are provided. In an extracorporeal treatment system, a fraction of a body fluid is passed into a treatment fluid, at least a portion of which is then passed through a sorbent suspension reactor for treatment by a sorbent suspension. The treatment fluid circuit can be maintained at a fixed volume, which enables accurate fluid balance between the patient and the extracorporeal circuit. Some or all of the treatment fluid, optionally also containing nutrients and/or therapeutic agents, is returned to the patient. In a peritoneal dialysis system, dialysate is passed into a patient's peritoneal cavity, recovered from the cavity, passed through a sorbent suspension reactor in accordance with the invention, and returned to the cavity.
