  • Patent number: 5637224
Abstract: A vaporizable solute transfer system for transferring a vaporizable solute from an aqueous feed solution to an extractant liquid comprises a fluid tight housing, a porous membrane which divides the housing into a feed solution chamber and an extractant chamber, and a vacuum atmosphere chamber formed of a nonporous material. The housing has feed solution inlet and outlet ports which communicate with the feed solution chamber, an extraction inlet port which communicates with the extractant chamber, and a vacuum outlet port which communicates with the vacuum atmosphere chamber. The vaporizable solute transfer system also includes a pressure difference control means for maintaining a difference between a liquid pressure of a feed solution chamber and a liquid pressure of an extractant liquid in the extractant chamber substantially within a predetermined pressure range so that an interface between the feed solution and the extractant is substantially immobilized at the membrane.

  • Patent number: 5624579
Abstract: A filter apparatus for removing solids from a liquid in which chain conveyor loops frictionally engage a segment of a continuous permanent filter media belt extending across the bottom of a tank over a perforate section through which liquid is withdrawn to be filtered. The chain conveyor loops and permanent filter media follow divergent paths after exiting the tank, the chain loops returning over the top of the tank, the permanent filter media belt returning beneath the tank to a point of entrance at the top of a rear tank wall. A disposable media belt is optionally introduced at the point the permanent media belt and chain conveyor loops reconverge at the entrance point of the tank at the rear wall. The chain conveyor loops are indexed periodically and frictionally engage the permanent media belt (and disposable media, if used) in the segment extending across the tank bottom to cause the belt media to likewise be indexed.

  • Patent number: 5595654
Abstract: A sludge filtration system for separating the sludge liquids from the sludge solids. A container provides a basin for receiving and holding the sludge. Within the container, a first filter assembly, positioned proximal the container bottom, defines a first filtrate cavity. The first filter assembly is maintained below the sludge level so that a pump, in flow communication with the first filtrate cavity, provides for vacuum evacuation of the first filtrate cavity. Placing a valve in the first filtrate discharge conduit facilitates selective vacuum evacuation or gravitational evacuation of the first filtrate cavity. A second filter assembly extends about the inside perimeter of the container cavity proximal the container side walls. In addition, the second filter assembly extends from proximal the container bottom to the container top end. The second filter assembly defines a second filtrate cavity. A second filtrate discharge conduit provides for gravitational evacuation of the second filtrate cavity.

The casing serves to maintain a determined pressure around the filter, for instance by use of released gases. It is the ojective of the present invention to keep the volume as small as possible. The body has two parallel slots on opposite sides of the body to engage into cut outs of a rack panel supported above a housing with a slanted top wall with elliptical holes cut to receive the collection container and support it sticking out of the housing.

  • Patent number: 5368732
Abstract: In order to wash the lower run of a horizontal belt filter more effectively, and simultaneously provide for tensioning of the lower run, as required when progressing the belt intermittently, a dead weight roller is supported in a bight of the lower run of the filter belt and reciprocates up and down in a wash liquor vessel as a drive roller is alternately extended, so as to advance the upper run of the belt, and retracted. A one way device is located upstream of the dead weight roller to prevent backward movement of lower run. As the bight decreases and increases, rolling action of the dead weight roller rubs the belt and forces wash liquor therethrough. A plurality of dead weight rollers in one or more wash liquor vessels may be provided and they may be guided at their ends in vertical or oblique guide tracks.

  • Patent number: 5366626
Abstract: In horizontal belt filter apparatus wherein the belt is progressed by alternate incremental motion of the upper run and the lower run, wash liquor used for washing the belt in the lower run, e.g. by spraying into a wash box, is recycled and used for washing filter cake on the upper run at several spaced apart locations. Also, in the upper run, a respective compression device is arranged subsequent to each supply of wash liquor in the direction of travel of the upper run, and during compression gas is blown into the filter cake through the pressure plate of each device so as to maximise extraction of liquid. Trays mounted below the belt are connected to vacuum during stationary periods of the upper run and are arranged to ensure separate collection of liquid for successive sections of the upper run, which liquid may optionally be recycled to upstream locations.

  • Patent number: 5364597
Abstract: A device for collecting particles, such as human cells, from a fluid sample, and for transferring the collected particles to a receiver, such as a glass microscope slide, provides substantially exact replication of the spatial distribution of the cells on the collection device. The device supports a surface-collecting filter on a tubular rim, with a precise degree of flatness, and fastens the filter in place at a mounting shoulder recessed below the rim. Distortions of the mounting shoulder or of the filter at the mounting shoulder, caused by securing the filter to the shoulder, are confined to the shoulder structure, and do not detract from the desired precision flatness of the filter and rim structure.

  • Patent number: 5308487
Abstract: A device for separating liquid and solid material from a mixture consists of an endless filter belt, beneath which is arranged a suction box connected to a vacuum device. The suction box supports the filter belt. The filter belt moves continuously while the suction box performs a reciprocating movement in the direction of the filter belt. In order to make possible the reciprocating movement of the suction box the connection of the suction box to the stationary vacuum device is embodied as a telescopic connection consisting of a stationary part connected to the vacuum device and a part connected to the suction box and slidably movable in the stationary part.

Abstract: A sugar centrifugal operates at decreased speed to reduce crystal damage but suffers no loss of sugar crystal/molasses separation rate. This is accomplished by superposing a partial vacuum on the molasses chamber of the centrifugal which promotes removal of syrup and water from the sugar crystals through the centrifugal basket wall. Additional drying of the separated crystals is provided by injection of air above the sugar chamber to replace that which is extracted through the centrifugal basket wall.

  • Patent number: 5271846
Abstract: An improved method for separating a particular liquid component from a solution containing two or more liquid components. The method employs a vessel divided into a solution chamber and a vacuum chamber by a permeable membrane which is a porous membrane exhibiting a superior affinity to the particular component intended to be separated than to the other components. The solution is placed in the solution chamber out of direct contact with the permeable membrane at which condition a vacuum is applied to the vacuum chamber to evaporate the solution in the chamber and draw the resulting vapors through the permeable membrane into the vacuum chamber, thereby collecting the particular component from the solution in a vapor-to-vapor permeation through the permeable membrane.
