  • Patent number: 8540879
Abstract: A device for separating blood into individual components and/or groups of components, in the form of a sterilizable system includes a filter arrangement forming inlet and outlet chambers using filter elements arranged therein, and respective receptacles for cellular blood components and for blood plasma. The inlet chamber can be connected to the blood source via a line on the inlet side to conduct the blood and is connected, on the outlet side, to the cellular blood components receptacle. The outlet chamber is connected to the blood plasma receptacle via a line on the outlet side. Thermal sterilization is used to sterilize the device by opening a respective line into the inlet-side line of the inlet chamber, into the inlet chamber and the outlet-side line of the outlet chamber, or into the outlet chamber, the line being connected to the exterior via a hydrophobic or hydrophilic filter.

  • Patent number: 8535945
Abstract: A system and method for concentrating samples. The system can include a first container adapted to contain a sample. The first container can include a first portion and a second portion adapted to be removably coupled to the first portion. The system can further include a second container comprising the second portion and a third portion adapted to be removably coupled to the second portion. The method can include centrifuging the first container in a first orientation toward the second portion of the first container; retaining a concentrate of the sample in the second portion of the first container; and centrifuging the second container in a second orientation toward the third portion of the second container, such that the concentrate retained in the second portion is moved into the third portion of the second container, the second orientation being different from the first orientation.

  • Patent number: 8518259
Abstract: An apparatus for de-aering, oxygenating and controlling a temperature of blood in an extracorporeal blood circuit. The apparatus includes a housing, a manifold body, a heat exchanger, and an oxygenator. A blood inlet tangentially directs blood into a first chamber of the housing. The manifold body is disposed in a second chamber, and includes a core and a plurality of vanes that define channels. The heat exchanger is arranged around the manifold body, and the oxygenator around the heat exchanger. The channels are open to the heat exchanger. An established blood flow path includes rotational flow within the first chamber to separate air from the blood, generally longitudinal flow from the first chamber and along the channels, and generally radial flow through the heat exchanger and the oxygenator. With this construction, gross air removal occurs prior to the blood passing through the heat exchanger and oxygenator.
