    Abstract: Wastewater, particularly blowdown from a recycle gas-scrubbing and gas-cooling system of a blast furnace, is treated in a two-stage chlorination unit, the first stage including a chlorine addition at a pH of about 8.5 to about 10, preferably 9-9.5, and the second stage continuing the chlorination reaction at a pH of about 6 to about 8, preferably 7-7.5, while monitoring the oxidation-reduction potential of the second stage to utilize as a control point for chlorine addition in the first stage. Various contaminants, notably the nitrogen-containing compounds, are destroyed in the chlorination steps. A caustic or lime pretreatment is preferred for scale control at a pH of about 10.5 to about 11, preferably 10.7, while lime pretreatment is performed at a pH of about 9.6 to about 10, preferably 9.8. After chlorination, the process stream is preferably passed through activated carbon to remove organics.

    Abstract: A method for recovering uranium and/or related values which include means for protecting ion-exchange resins in the recovery operation from oxidative degradation due to contact with hydrogen peroxide. A guard chamber is positioned in the elution circuit so that barren eluant, after it is stripped of its uranium and/or related values by treatment with hydrogen peroxide, will flow through the chamber. The guard chamber contains catalytic material, e.g. activated carbon, which decomposes hydrogen peroxide upon contact into water and oxygen. The barren eluant, after it passes through the catalytic material, is used to make up fresh eluant for reuse in the recovery method without the risk of the fresh eluant causing oxidative degradation of the resins.

    Abstract: The invention is directed to a process for the purification of aqueous solutions of low molecular weight polyhydroxyl compounds containing calcium or lead compounds or mixtures thereof. Methanol and a precipitant for calcium and/or lead ions in a quantity equivalent to the ions to be removed are added to the solutions. The deposits thus formed are removed and the residual solutions are treated with a cation exchanger followed by distillation of the low-boiling fractions. The distillation sump which essentially contains the low molecular weight polyhydroxyl compounds is then treated with an anion exchanger.
