Abstract: An improved method for the oxidation of water-soluble inorganic sulfide ions in aqueous systems is disclosed. The method uses a soluble metallic ion catalyst in the presence of an oxidizing agent. The improvement comprises adding to the system a water-soluble anionically-charged polymer having a molecular weight of from 1,000-100,000. Additionally, certain organic phosphonate materials can be used in combination with the polymer.By the use of the polymer or polymer-phosphonate treatment the efficiency of the metallic ion catalyst and the sulfide oxidation step is improved.
Abstract: In the detoxification of waste waters containing nitrite ions by means of hydrogen peroxide the addition of hydrogen peroxide is automatically controllable by adding the hydrogen peroxide continuously or in portions with continuous measurement of the pH and stopping the addition when no further reduction of the pH is caused by it. By control of the hydrogen peroxide addition through the change of the pH it is guaranteed that sufficient hydrogen peroxide is added to reach a complete detoxification of the waste water while on the other hand there is not wasted hydrogen peroxide unnecessarily.

Abstract: A waste water-treating method, which comprises the steps of: adjusting the pH value of an aqueous solution containing a nitrous acid radical within a range of 2 to 5; treating said aqueous solution with hydrogen peroxide to oxidize the nitrous acid radical into a nitric acid radical; and throwing away the waste water in the neutralized form.
Abstract: A process for the deodorizing and removing organic materials from sulfur containing aqueous effluent obtained in the manufacture of organic chemicals by treatment of said effluent with hydrogen peroxide under controlled conditions.
Abstract: A method of controlling pathogenic organisms, fungi and algae in water which includes the steps of applying to the water a primary reagent comprising a linear polymeric biguanide or a salt thereof which in its free base form has a recurring polymer unit represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein X and Y represent bridging groups in which together the total number of carbon atoms directly interposed between the pairs of nitrogen atoms linked by X and Y is more than 9 and less than 17, and a back-up algicidal agent comprising a substance which in the aqueous phase produces hydrogen peroxide, preferably persalts selected from perborates, percarbonates, peroxides and persulphates.
Abstract: A process for the chemical treatment of an effluent containing at least one organic compound selected from the group consisting of an organometallic compound and an organic compound containing at least one of phosphorus, nitrogen and halogen, comprising treating the effluent hydrolytically for about 20 to 200 minutes at a temperature above about 100.degree. C. under a pressure above about 2 bars and a pH of about 1 to 14. Advantageously, a catalyst comprising activated carbon or kieselguhr is added to the effluent before the hydrolytic treatment and the hydrolytic treatment is carried out in the presence of ammonia or a primary or secondary amine. The organic compound may be an acid ester, a dye, or quaternary ammonium compound, a cyanide, a nitrile, a cyanate, an isocyanate, hydrazine, an organic derivative of hydrazine, an azo compound or an organometallic compound and the effluent may be aftertreated as with hypochlorite or H.sub.2 O.sub.2.

Abstract: A deodorant composition is made up of an oxygen carrying element associated with a synergistic odor-masking compound, and a biodegradable emulsifying surfactant. It can be used in the form of an emulsion or of the two separate constituents, and applicable to deodorizing organic or vegetal wastes and byproducts which normally release nauseating or harmful odors essentially made up of nitrogen or sulfur derivatives.

Abstract: A method of dehydrating an organic sludge, which comprises adjusting the pH value of a sludge having a solids concentration in the range of from 0.5 to 8% by weight, to a pH of 5 or less, heating the thus adjusted sludge, mixing with the sludge an oxidizer capable of displaying oxidation ability within the acid region, and dewatering the sludge with a dehydrator.
