    Abstract: A decanter apparatus and method of operating the same to decant liquid from adjacent the surface in a tank. The decanter apparatus includes a decanter receptacle having a top opening surrounded by a decanter rim, a decant pipe having an inlet end communicating with the decanter receptacle and a discharge end extending out the tank, and a float overlying the decanter receptacle and connected thereto for relative movement between a decanter closed position in which the float engages the decanter rim and a decanter open position in which the decanter rim is spaced below the float. The decanter receptacle when empty in the decanter closed position has sufficient positive buoyancy to buoyantly support the decanter assembly with the decanter rim above the surface of the liquid in the tank. The float has sufficient positive buoyancy to buoyantly support the decanter receptacle when the latter is in the decanter open position and filled with liquid.

    Abstract: A system for cleaning contaminated fuel in a fuel tank by introducing a suction line to substantially the lowermost part of the tank for suctioning off free water and heavy contaminants settled in the tank. The materials are then routed via suction to a first strainer, where free water and contaminants are trapped and retrieved. The filtrate then moves to a separation vessel, whereby the fuel is filtered through a primary filter medium, and the contaminants settle to the bottom of the vessel and are collected. The filtered fuel is then routed to a tertiary filter before being returned to the fuel tank to agitate the contaminants and facilitate this removal by the suction side of the system. This closed loop process is continued until the filtered fuel is substantially free of contaminants.

    Abstract: The new floating sludge evacuating unit for circular tanks having a drain, and a scraper blade movable in relation thereto is characterized in that the scraper blade is lifted repeatedly in order to evacuate the tank surface by sections, advanced to a position remote from the drain where it is stopped and lowered, while the drain follows the scraper blade and pushes the floating sludge together, and that prior to the lowering motion causing the floating sludge to be evacuated a push-down unit causes the intake edge of the drain to be pre-lowered to a position which takes the level in the tank into account. Then, the lowering path for floating sludge evacuation will always be correct, and evacuation of water will be avoided. A scraper blade interacting with several stationary drains is operating according to the same principle. It is lowered behind every drain and pushes the floating sludge toward the next drain.

    Abstract: A blood washing device is employed for recovering shed blood or other sources of blood and preparing packed red cells therefrom. The device employs a gravity sedimentation procedure but achieves a shortened washing period by using an aggregating reagent for aggregating or agglomerating the red cells so as to increase their sedimentation velocity during the gravity sedimentation. The wash period is further shortened by employing a vessel with a flat shallow configuration for shortening the sedimentation path length of the aggregated red cells. A non-turbulant removal of the resultant broad shallow layer of sedimented red cells is achieved by carefully tilting the vessel after the sedimentation step so as to induce the sedimented red cells to slide or shift into a funnel configuration within the vessel. After the red cells have shifted into a funnel configuration, they are allowed to stand in that configuration so as undergo further concentration.

    Abstract: An oil separation method and apparatus for the continuous separation of acceptable oil from contaminated oil containing solids and liquids withdrawn from an oil well. Three separate settling tanks are partitioned and provided with skimmers, as appropriate, to enable contaminated oil to dwell sufficiently within the tanks. After sufficient dwell time, the skimmers remove separated oil from the top layer and move it to an oil tank. Liquids such as water and emulsified oil are separated into an intermediate layer and moved to further settling tanks to provide sufficient dwell time for oil separation and collection. The first settling tank has a rotating jet spray header for agitating the solids accumulated in the bottom of the first tank and a series of suction headers for withdrawing the solids without interruption of the top oil layer or the separation operation.

With removal of the light liquid, heavy liquid rises and the sensor senses the heavy liquid and stops the light liquid removal before the heavy liquid is also removed. Heavy liquid from the separation tank is recirculated, being directed across the surface of the holding tank in a downstream direction.

    Abstract: A method is described for safely and effectively washing solid gels or films containing biological macromolecules such as proteins or nucleic acids. The method involves placing the gels in an open plastic container and decanting a wash solution horizontally so as to leave the gel at the bottom of the container without using external means to hold the gel down. The undamaged gel can then be safely removed and detection experiments can thus be carried out. A preferred apparatus for carrying out this method is also described and consists of an elongated open-topped side spouted tray.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a system for the automatic removal of contaminants such as water from the fuel supply of an internal combustion engine of the type including an auxiliary fuel tank. The system is automatically controlled and responsive to sensed contaminant levels in a contaminant removal mechanism and employs an existing fuel transfer pump to direct fuel around the auxiliary fuel tank through the contaminant removal mechanism. The pump additionally operates to provide a continuous supply of fuel to the engine to keep it operating while simultaneously permitting the discharge of contaminants from the contaiminant removal mechanism when a predetermined maximum contaminant level has been reached. This system is especially effective in removing water from the fuel system of a diesel engine powered vehicle such as a tank wherein the engine and auxiliary fuel tank are components of a power pack that is removable from the tank.

    Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for removing sludge from a spray booth tank using a single pump for withdrawing liquid including sludge from the tank. A portion of the liquid from the pump is returned to the tank through eductors for agitating liquid in the tank. At least a portion of the liquid from the pump flows through a hydrocyclone separator. Sludge from the separator is collected in a settling tank. A small portion of the clarified liquid from the separator flows through an aspirator pump to the booth tank and the remainder of the clarified liquid is returned directly to the booth tank. The aspirator pump returns excess liquid from the settling tank to the booth tank.

    Abstract: An apparatus for cleansing gray water from showers and the like and reclaiming the cleansed water for reuse comprises a receptacle and a conduit for delivering gray water to the receptacle. A sensor detects flow of gray water into the receptacle and injects cleansing agents into the flow in response to such detection. A drain conduit communicates with the upper portion of the receptacle for extracting floating contaminants from the surface of gray water therein and a valved conduit communicates with the bottom of the receptacle for selectively extracting sinking contaminates thereform. A pump is adapted to draw the resulting cleansed gray water from the receptacle and deliver it to a remote location for reuse as, for example, in flushing toilets.

Monitoring means monitors a characteristic of the filtrate and the liquid to enable a rate of change in the characteristic of the filtrate/liquid to be determined. The apparatus functions at its optimum at a loading rate for the mixture which is just less than that which causes extrusion of the liquid in the pressure de-watering zone.

    Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed for separating or fractionating particles of differing sedimentation rates in a fluid. For fractionation, the mixture is introduced into a tube and subjected to a cyclic sequence of alternating axial flows, with optional waiting periods of zero flow. The velocities and time periods of the individual flows in the cycle are adjusted so that particles of greater and lesser sedimentation rates tend to be driven in opposite directions. At the end of each cycle there is a step of resuspension of sedimented particles without axial dispersion and independent of axial flows.

Any light phase removed with the heavy phase floats to the top in the settling tank and is reintroduced at the top of the spiral.

    Abstract: A dump truck has a tiltable dump body with a tailgate at its rear end. A partition or weir mounted in the dump body and of lesser height than the walls of the dump body divides the dump body into front and rear compartments. A siphon is connected between the two compartments and extends over the partition. The rear compartment, having a discharge opening at its rear end which is closed by a tailgate, receives dredged material in the form of a mixture of water and sand (or silt) pumped thereinto through a supply conduit on the dump body. As the rear compartment is being filled with dredged material, gravity causes the sand (silt) to settle at the bottom and the water to rise to the top and spill over the partition into the front compartment. Some water also flows through the sipon into the front compartment.

A shield is provided on the float overlying the inlet side of the pump to inhibit direct passage of liquid from the area of the basin above the shield and to induce an inflow pattern below the surface of the liquid toward the inlet of the pump. A scum receiving trough is mounted on the float and extends along the outer margin of the float with the upper weir edge adjacent the surface of the liquid in the basin to receive matter floating on the surface of the basin. Material received in the trough is selectively discharged to a receiver outside the basin.

    Abstract: This invention teaches a method of removing dissolved minerals and organic material from water. The water is heated under controlled pressure to reduce the density and thus opening the molecular spacing of the water, such that mineral particles and organics cannot stay within the water molecule cluster, so fall out of solution. To speed separation of the mixture a hydroclone type centrifuge is used. The hot, high pressure clean water gives its energy back to the process through heat exchange and a hydraulic motor. The net energy used to effect dissolution is thus very low, being equivalent to pump loss and heat loss, from the equipment.
