Although the retractable sediment collection device is suitable for use in any kind of settling tank, it is particularly suited for use in closed tanks where access to the interior of the tank is limited through a single opening. The retractable sediment collector may be raised from floor of the tank to the top of the tank where the operating mechanisms can be accessed for repair or maintenance without removing the entire sediment collector from the tank.

The hydrocarbon vapors are captured and condensed to obtain a liquid hydrocarbon, which is delivered to the mud pit for admixture with the mud stream.

    Abstract: A system for removing particulates, formed as metal is machined, from coog and lubricating fluid. The system has a tank filled with fluid. The bottom of the tank slopes forward. The tank receives contaminated fluid at its top rear. The contaminants are swarf (chips removed from the workpiece) and fines (which come both from the workpiece and the grinder, borer, or drill). After the swarf is removed from the contaminated fluid by a magnetic filter, only fines remain. The fluid contaminated with fines flows from back to front in the tank, passing under a baffle projecting vertically downward from the top of the tank. A whoosh plate causes the fines to settle out into the tank, while uncontaminated fluid flows over the whoosh plate and is reused. The fines collect at the tank's bottom, from where they are pumped out and mixed with the magnetically-removed swarf for removal.

A group of return pipes are adapted to return dewatered waste from the second to the first chamber and the cleaned water to the sewer line. The liquid to be treated is forced into the swirl chamber through tangential injection slits extending along most of the height of the chamber, which generate a vortex flow inside the swirl chamber and around the porous filter element. Particle-free liquid permeates across the porous filter, flows along its interior, and is collected at a filtrate outlet port. The remaining liquid, now having a higher particle concentration, flows out of the apparatus and can be separately collected, or recirculated back to the apparatus for further separation. The swirling flow retards particle motion toward the filter element thus minimizing buildup of a cake of particles on the porous filter medium.

    Abstract: A blood washing device is employed for recovering shed blood or other sources of blood and preparing packed red cells therefrom. The device employs a gravity sedimentation procedure but achieves a shortened washing period by using an aggregating reagent for aggregating or agglomerating the red cells so as to increase their sedimentation velocity during the gravity sedimentation. The wash period is further shortened by employing a vessel with a flat shallow configuration for shortening the sedimentation path length of the aggregated red cells. A non-turbulant removal of the resultant broad shallow layer of sedimented red cells is achieved by carefully tilting the vessel after the sedimentation step so as to induce the sedimented red cells to slide or shift into a funnel configuration within the vessel. After the red cells have shifted into a funnel configuration, they are allowed to stand in that configuration so as undergo further concentration.

    Abstract: A sludge scraper apparatus for scraping a sludge sediment from an earthen bottom of a sludge reservoir, is described. The scraper apparatus is comprised of a main frame that provides for mounting a pair of skids, a scraper blade and a pair of wheels mounted on the apparatus. A first tow line is connected between the frame and a first winch, mounted on a first shore of the reservoir. A second tow line is connected between the skids and a second winch, mounted on a second shore of the reservoir. The first winch then moves the scraper apparatus over the earthen bottom of the reservoir from a starting position adjacent the second shore of the reservoir by spooling up the first tow line. This causes the scraper apparatus to move in a pass over the bottom of the reservoir, with the scraper blade plowing loose sludge sediment towards the first shore. Then, the second winch is used to move the sludge scraper back towards the second shore and the starting position by spooling up the second tow line.

The carriage is propelled on a looped cable across the surface of the tank and applies a tractive force through the suspension cables to the scraper assembly. As the submerged scraper assembly advances, the scraper blades apply a shear force to dislodge the sludge from the bed and direct the sludge to a pump carried on the submerged scraper assembly. The dislodged sludge is pumped through a hose from the tank.

The sludge collector is designed for most efficient use with spiral or curved scraper blades in a cylindrical clarifying tank.
