Utilizing Particulate Bed Patents (Class 210/807)
  • Patent number: 6361701
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and device for the continuous filtration of liquids containing solid matter, in particular for cleaning wastewater, by means of a filter bed consisting of a particulate filtering medium, which is continuously moved through a vertically positioned cylindrical annular space (2) through which the liquid to be filtered continuously flows radially from the interior to the exterior. The particulate filtering medium containing the separated solid matter is continuously tapped from the lower end of the annular space (2), transported to the top, freed of the filtered solid matter and fed back into the annular space (2) at its upper end. With this kind of method and device, to be able to prevent in a better and more simple manner blockages caused by the separated floc of solid matter, the invention provides that as particulate filtering medium a particle mixture is used with a particle-size range comprising two or more particle sizes, ranging from coarse (2.5 mm) to fine (0.

Abstract: A water treatment apparatus provides treatment of water to remove, for example, hydrogen sulfide and iron, dissolved or dispersed in ground water. The system is provided with water from a conventional well and pump and includes a venturi-type aerating device which may be supplied air by a compressor. The air and water mixture are supplied to a first aerating tank through a spray nozzle which reduces the aerated water flow to a mist of fine droplets. A draw tube adjacent the bottom of the first tank provides the water to a treatment tank which is partially filled with a chemically active filtration media. The treatment tank is also equipped with a draw tube which draws off the treated water at the bottom of the tank and provides it to a third, deaerating tank wherein the air separates from the water and is purged to the atmosphere. Reduction of hydrogen sulfide content from 30 ppm to less than 5 ppm has been achieved.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to methods for purifying wastewater, including water which may or may not contain fatty acids or oils, by producing in situ a hydrophobic flocculant including a water-insoluble metal hydroxide. In the preferred methods, metallic cations are produced by the gradual dissolution of consumable, similar metal sources, preferably, a fluidized bed of metallic particles. The motion of the particles of the fluidized bed maintains the surfaces thereof clean of oxides and other contaminants in order to facilitate the gradual dissolution thereof. Oxidation of the dissolved cations to form the water-insoluble metal hydroxide is achieved by flowing an oxidizing agent, e.g., air or pure oxygen, through the system. Contaminants are entrapped and removed within the insoluble flocculants, including the water-insoluble metal hydroxide and, optionally, metallic soaps which are formed in the presence of fatty acids.

Abstract: A process is described for the removal of mercury present at levels of 1-5000 ppb in waste water discharged from clinical research laboratories, industries and hospitals. The process involves preoxidation of the influent waste water with very small amounts of hypochlorite (16-100 ppm levels)or hydrogen peroxide, in a pretreatment tank. The waste water is then serially filtered through two pre filters and four carbon columns at a flow rate of 5 bedvolumes/hr. The preoxidation, prefiltration, organic removal, heavy metals removal (second column) and polishing stages (third and fourth) are important to achieve very low levels of mercury in the effluent. The last three columns contain activated coconut shell carbon impregnated with mercaptothiazoline . The three columns of the mercaptothiazoline impregnated carbon remove mercury and other heavy metals successively and reduce their levels in the influent to very low levels that is well below the enforced limit of 1 ppb.

The cartridge has a head-space for collecting entrained gasses such as volatile organic compounds, chlorine and air. Water sterility is achieved by heating the water over an appropriate period of time. Turbidity is removed within the cartridge due to settling induced by the low fluid velocity controlled by a controller and by a filter provided at the outlet of the cartridge. Abstract: In a method for backwashing a water processing system using a buoyant filter layer constrained under wire mesh screen extending across a processing vessel, a water surface level in the processing vessel is lowered below the wire mesh screen. Air is subsequently released from under the buoyant filter layer to separate substances clogging the filter layer, while allowing the release of air out of said vessel from an upper part thereof. By lowering the water surface level below the upper wire mesh screen, the filter material is allowed to move more freely because the filter material is not restricted by the wire mesh screen from making upward movement. Hence, when air is released from under the filter layer, the filter material can move uniformly over the entire filter layer, and the clogging substances such as SS captured by the filter material and the biological film formed on the surface of the filter material can be favorably removed without damaging the filter material.

The tube receives compressed air from two horizontally positioned inlets positioned 180.degree. from each other. The flat and round target plate makes the scrubbing of filtration material more efficient, while a baffle prevents the filtration material from being ejected from the washbox.

  • Patent number: 5714077
Abstract: An automatically-regulated, self-flushing method of filtering a liquid suspension includes passing the suspension through a granular filter material. The flow of suspension is halted to relieve the pressure in the system, so facilitating the settling of the removed particles down the filter. Further settling of the particles may be achieved by passing an airstream through the filter material. A reverse flow of the filtrate then effects a backwashing action on the filter material so that further settling of the particles is encouraged. The filter material may be contained in a drain passage which follows a generally sinuous path. The drain passage may serve a waste landfill site in which toxic, hazardous or domestic waste is disposed.

  • Patent number: 5698106
Abstract: It is possible to filter a suspension or emulsion in a filter bed of particulate filter medium by allowing the suspension to flow upwards through the filter bed simultaneously as the medium flows downwards through a filtering tank wherein filtration takes place. Filtration thus takes place during counterflow between suspension and filter medium. The supply of suspension takes place in the lower part of the filter bed and the filtered liquid phase is taken away from a zone above the filter bed. The polluted filter medium close to the bottom of the filter tank is taken out for conveyance to a washing apparatus above the filter bed and after washing is returned to the upper side of the filter bed. For providing a filter which has a considerably lower construction height for a given and unchanged volume of the filter medium, the washing apparatus is lowered so that its lower part is at a level below the upper surface of the filter bed.

  • Patent number: 5660733
Abstract: A process of dewatering primary-treated sewage which includes mixing the sewage with a coagulant or flocculant aid, usually activated polymer. The sewage is then mixed and flocculated at conditions which involve extensive mixing turbulence of the sewage and whereby part of the sewage is recycled so as to be again subjected to such mixing and flocculating. Flocks form the solid particles in the sewage. The pH of the sewage is chemically adjusted into the basic pH range or to a higher basic pH. The sewage is applied to a sand bed whereby the flocculated solids in the sewage are separated from the liquid in the sewage, by collecting on the top of the sand bed. The flocculated solids located on the top of the sand bed are air dried. The dried flocculated solids are removed from the top of the sand bed.

Abstract: Method and apparatus by which contaminants are removed from a liquid flowing through a filter vessel having an inlet for providing a contaminated liquid flow into one end thereof and an outlet through which filtered liquid can exit the vessel. A filter screen supports a relatively large quantity of particulate filter media within the filter vessel on the filter screen for normal filter operation and captures contaminants by flowing contaminated liquid through the inlet while filtered liquid exits through the filter screen and outlet, leaving the contaminants on the filter media. The system automatically occasionally cleans the media in a unique cleaning cycle, that includes one or a plurality of closed loop flow paths that fluidizes the media within one filter vessel and cleans the media externally of the filter vessel by flowing the fluidized filter media along the closed loop flow path.

Abstract: A method for complete treatment of septic tank effluent or other contaminated liquid by contriving for it to flow in an ultra-thin film over a surface treatment medium such as fabric or sand. It provides diffusive aeration, biological reaction and physical filtration on a molecular scale. The device transfers contaminated water, or other liquid, from a container to a final collector completely purifying the liquid in the process. The purified effluent can then be reused for household, industrial, irrigation or other uses, or disposed of as normal surface run-off in streams or lakes. To increase efficiency, said container encloses a progressively more finely pored media precisely situated with effluent seeping gradually through progressively finer pores to provide uniquely effective pretreatment.

Abstract: A pelletized composition and method of using this composition for removing pollutants from storm water runoff. A bed of the pellets has a useful initial permeability to storm water runoff, and retains a significant proportion of this permeability for a period of several years. Preferably, the pellets are dried to a moisture content of less than 25 wt. % so that they are able to withstand a crush force of at least 7 lb., without structural failure. Optionally, the pellets may contain gravel that forms a core of the compost pellet and that assists in causing the compost to agglomerate into a rounded pellet. When immersed in water, the pellets retain the original dry shape and maintain a significant proportion of the crush strength while providing interstitial spaces through which storm water can flow thereby reducing the problem of sedimentation that is encountered in unpelletized beds of compost used in this service.
