Abstract: Provided herein are methods for isolating nucleic acids from intact cells in a sample of intact cells and cell free nucleic acids. The intact cells and cell free nucleic acids are captured and concentrated within the pores of a silicate matrix in a microporous silicate filter. Within the silicate matrix the cell free nucleic acids are degraded with a nuclease, the intact cells are lysed with the released DNA binding to the silicate, the nuclease treated cell free nucleic acids and contaminants from the lysed are washed from the silicate matrix and the DNA bound to the silicate is eluted therefrom to form an isolated DNA product.

Abstract: A recycling process for achieving near-zero emissions of tannery effluent is characterized in that effluent recycling is carried out independently in soaking, liming, re-liming, de-liming bating, pickling chrome tanning, re-tanning, neutralizing, and dyeing procedures. The effluents in the above procedures can be recycled in each step. This process greatly reduces effluent discharge and helps solve the problem of tanning pollution. The process also improves the quality of the finished leather, effectively decreases loose grain rate and increases compactness and fullness of the finished product. The project can reduce chemical material consumption by 15%-55%. For example, the consumption of chromium powder can be reduced up to 65%. Consumption of other chemical materials can be reduced by more than 90%, while certain chemical materials can be essentially completely conserved.

Abstract: The invention relates to microscale cell separating apparatus which are able to separate cells on the basis of size of the cells, interaction of the cells with surfaces of the apparatus, or both. The apparatus comprises a stepped or sloped separation element (16) interposed between an inlet region (20) and an outlet region (22) of a void that can be tilled with fluid. The void can be enclosed within a cover (12) and fluid flow through the void engages cells with the separation element. Only cells which have (or can deform to have) a characteristic dimension smaller than or equal to the distance between a step and the cover or body can pass onto or past a step. Modifications of surfaces within the apparatus can also inhibit passage of cells onto or past a step.

Abstract: An independent blood filter device depends on flow geometry to deliver blood serum or plasma free of detrimental levels of hemoglobin. It depends critically on an upstream flow rate or pressure differential limiting control element or device that limits the rate of change of pressure differential across the filter element. Pre-evacuated versions can be used to simultaneously draw blood from a living being and provide pressure differential across the filter element between an evacuated collector and a supply end open to atmosphere. A unit pressurized by hand motion employs the external shape of a partially filled blood collection tube as a piston to produce pressure in advance of the control element or device to create the pressure differential across the filter element to a collector vented to atmosphere. The control element or device is disclosed in numerous forms, including specially sized flow constrictions and compliant arrangements.

  • Patent number: 8647508
Abstract: A system and method for processing samples. The system can include a loading chamber, a detection chamber positioned in fluid communication with the loading chamber, and a fluid path defined at least partially by the loading chamber and the detection chamber. The system can further include a filter positioned such that at least one of its inlet and its outlet is positioned in the fluid path. The method can include positioning a sample in the loading chamber, filtering the sample in the fluid path to form a concentrated sample and a filtrate, removing the filtrate from the fluid path at a location upstream of the detection chamber, moving at least a portion of the concentrated sample in the fluid path to the detection chamber, and analyzing at least a portion of the concentrated sample in the detection chamber for an analyte of interest.

  • Publication number: 20140034584
Abstract: According to an embodiment of the present disclosure, a process liquid supply apparatus operating method is provided. The method includes filling a filter unit with a process liquid from an upstream side of the filter unit to a downstream side of the filter unit after newly mounting or replacing the filter unit and repeating a depressurization filtering process and a pressurization filtering process for a predetermined number of times. The depressurization filtering process depressurizes the process liquid in the downstream side of the filter unit and thereby allows the process liquid to permeate through the filter unit. The pressurization filtering process pressurizes the process liquid from the upstream side of the filter unit and thereby allows the process liquid to permeate through the filter unit.

Abstract: Extracting or removing at least a portion of liquid phase from a whole sample using a centrifugal force is disclosed. Centrifugal forces are used to apply pressure to a whole sample and drive a liquid phase through a passage region that can be perforated and/or porous and maintain a drier portion within a separation container. The whole sample can be dried, which includes a remaining sample where excess or a selected amount of liquid is removed. Direct access to the separation container or area can then be made to provide for an efficient withdrawal of the drier material from the separation container.

Abstract: The present invention provides, in at least one embodiment, a system and method for producing cleaner water and air without using additional power. The system produces cleaner water by heating the sucked air, which improves the efficiency of the air stripping. The system produces cleaner air by fanning the contaminated air through a thermal oxidizer and/or a carbon filterator. The fanning is powered by a belt pulley powered by the gravitational force from the contaminated water.

Abstract: This invention incorporates barrel-shaped polymer-structured separatory funnels. The separatory funnels are made from an injection molding machine using cheaper plastic resins such as polypropylene, or polyethylene instead of glass in order to lower costs, so they are ready-to-use and disposable. The innovative separatory funnels have multi-functional features, which can be used as regular separatory funnels for liquid-liquid phase separation and extraction, as receiving receptacles to take the filtrate in a solid-liquid filtration apparatus, and also as flasks hooked in a rotary evaporator to evaporate solvents.
