The closure includes a central body portion sized to cover the container opening and a peripheral portion adapted to contact the rim portion of the container. A plurality of tabs are unitarily fixed to the peripheral portion, each tab including a tang adapted to engage the ledge of the container finish. Each tab also includes a thinned, stressed portion between the tang and the rim portion which is reactive to an application of heat to cause shortening of the tab length. The thinned portion also acts as a hinge to permit flexural displacement of the tab with respect to the body portion. The closure when applied to a container is completed by a band which encompasses the tabs, the band also being reactive to an application of heat to cause contraction of the band to insure continued engagement between the ledge and tangs.

The seal system comprises the combination of indicia specifically placed on the container and a seal means in the form of a heat shrink band or a foil sheet applied to the container in a manner so as to temporarily obscure the indicia. In a first embodiment the indicia is applied to the container in an area below the neck and the seal means comprises an opaque band adhered to the container and closure over the juncture of thereof and over the indicia. In a second embodiment, the indicia is applied to the lip around the container mouth and the seal means comprises a foil sheet adhered to the lip and covering the mouth.

Abstract: At the top of a bottle the circumferential bead lying between the cap fastening means and the neck is enlarged in diameter to better meet the enlarged diameter of an oversize cap such as a two piece "child-resistant" cap. The undercut below the bead forming the neck is greatly exaggerated. The circumferential bead is located lower on the top to better fit the extended skirt length of the outer cap of the two piece "child-resistant" cap. A circumferential shoulder is added above the bead to substantially match the skirt length and diameter of a standard cap. Regardless of whether a "child-resistant" cap or a standard cap is used, the plastic shrink-fit band tightly fits about the cap and over and underneath the circumferential bead. The loosening of either "child resistant" or standard cap will force the splitting of the band because the shrinkage of the band below the circumferential bead is considerably greater than the innate circumferential elongation of the shrunk plastic band material.

After applying a solvent of the plastic sheet material to the trailing edge of a length thereof, the sheet is wrapped around the container and the mantrel sleeve so that the trailing edge overlaps the leading edge and the solvent forms a firm bond between the overlapped edges. The mandrel sleeve is then withdrawn from the wrapped length, leaving it around the container, and the sheet material is heat shrunk to fit tightly over its full height around the contoured container. Before the sheet is wrapped around the mandrel and container, an adhesive, such as a hot melt glue, may be applied too that portion of the sheet that is wrapped in direct contact with the container.
